Microsoft has redesigned the Windows Insider Program around two main channels: Experimental for earlier, less settled features and Beta for previews closer to release. The redesign also adds feature controls for Experimental and changes how announced features arrive in Beta. The rollout began in April 2026, but Microsoft described the new Windows settings interface as a gradual rollout; it has not established that every retail Windows 11 device has received it.
What changed in the Windows Insider Program?
The redesign replaces the former Dev and Canary channels with Experimental, while refreshing the Beta experience. It is intended to make the choice of preview channel clearer and address a specific frustration: people installed an update after reading about a feature, then could not find it. Microsoft summarized that feedback with the phrase “it’s not there,” rather than reporting a quantified survey result. Microsoft’s April 10, 2026 announcement explains the changes.
The program now distinguishes more explicitly between early work and previews Microsoft expects to ship in the coming weeks. It also gives Experimental users a way to control some preview features, while Microsoft says announced Beta features will be available to users who install the relevant update.
Experimental or Beta: which channel should you choose?
| Decision | Experimental | Beta |
|---|---|---|
| Intended stage | Early access to features under active development | Previews of features closer to release |
| What to expect | Features may change, be delayed, or never ship | Less unsettled than Experimental, but still preview software |
| Feature controls | A Feature flags page lets users enable or disable specific preview features | Announced features in an installed update are intended to be available; Microsoft may still test small variations |
| Best fit | People who want earlier access and are comfortable with change | People who want a more settled preview |
Choose Experimental if getting early access matters more than predictability and you are willing to send feedback on changing software. Choose Beta if you would rather preview work closer to release. Microsoft’s relative positioning does not guarantee production-grade stability or a particular crash rate.

How feature availability works now
Beta: announced features are intended to arrive with the update
Microsoft says that when it announces a feature in a Beta update and you install that update, you will have the feature. This is a change from gradual feature rollouts that could leave some Beta users waiting after an announcement. Microsoft qualifies the promise: small differences within a feature may still be tested, so users should not assume every detail will look identical.
Experimental: use Feature flags for selected previews
Experimental’s Feature flags page lets Insiders turn specific preview experiences on or off. A flag is a control for preview functionality, not a promise that the feature will be included in a future Windows release. The available flags can depend on the build, so check the page on your device rather than expecting every build to expose the same choices.

How the transition from Dev and Canary works
Microsoft began a phased migration on April 24, 2026. Beta users were mapped to Beta, and Dev users to Experimental. Canary migration depends on the device’s build family, so check the displayed build number rather than assuming every Canary installation follows the same route.
| Previous channel or build family | New channel mapping announced by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| Beta | Beta |
| Dev | Experimental |
| Canary, 28000-series build | Experimental (26H1) |
| Canary, 29500-series build | Experimental (Future Platforms) |
The migration was phased, and build family matters. Microsoft also described a Windows core version selection for advanced users, with 25H2 and 26H1 among the options most users would see in its April announcement. Future Platforms is an earlier platform preview, not a normal retail-aligned channel. Availability and compatible choices can depend on the device.

How to check your channel and available choices
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Check the channel and Windows version or build displayed for your device. If you are on a Canary-derived build, use the build series to understand the announced migration mapping.
- Read the release notes for that build family before changing channels, then review the choices shown on your device.
- Follow the on-device guidance before confirming a switch or leaving the program. Do not assume every device has the same downgrade or exit route.
Microsoft says the redesign is intended to make moving between channels or leaving easier, but the practical path can depend on the installed build and Windows version. The earlier experience could require a clean installation in some cases, so check the current device-specific instructions before taking an action that could disrupt your setup.
Has the new Insider interface reached every Windows 11 PC?
No universal completion was established in the available Microsoft announcements. On June 26, 2026, Microsoft said it was beginning a gradual rollout of the redesigned interface to standard retail Windows 11 builds under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, with the rollout expected over the coming weeks. That announcement does not confirm that every retail device had received the interface. Microsoft’s September 25 build announcement shows that Beta and Experimental were still active, including separate 26H1 tracks, but does not say the retail interface rollout was complete. No. Enrollment and ordinary Insider updates are managed through Windows settings. Microsoft committed to publishing Insider ISOs alongside regularly scheduled Beta and Experimental builds, aiming to make them available the week after flighting, according to its May 1, 2026 announcement. ISOs are an installation-media option, not a requirement for switching channels. Microsoft’s ISO announcement

Quick Recap
What to know before installing Insider builds
- Experimental features are actively developing and may change, be delayed, or never ship.
- Beta is closer to release, but remains preview software; channel positioning is not a stability guarantee.
- Channel changes and exits can depend on the device’s Windows version and build. Review the instructions shown for your installation before proceeding.
- Microsoft said its April 2026 improvements would also apply to Windows Insider Program for Business customers, while Windows Server Insiders would remain unchanged. That was the scope described in that announcement; specialized business and Server users should verify current applicability.
