In Microsoft Entra ID, the registration is an application object, while the Enterprise applications area manages service principal objects. A service principal is not a copy of the registration. It is the local instance that a tenant can review and govern.
App registration vs. enterprise application: the essential difference
| Item | What it represents | Where its controls matter |
|---|---|---|
| App registration (application object) | The app’s definition and identity configuration, including its supported account types, redirect URIs, credentials, API permissions, published scopes, app roles, and sign-in metadata. | Primarily in the tenant where the application is registered and maintained by its owners. |
| Enterprise application (service principal) | A tenant-specific instance of an application definition. It is the local identity used to govern the app’s access and behavior in that tenant. | In the tenant that has provisioned the service principal, including a customer tenant using a multitenant app. |
The application (client) ID identifies the app in transactions with the Microsoft identity platform. A service principal refers to the application definition; it does not create a second, independent registration. Microsoft describes the relationship in its app registration guidance and application ecosystem overview.
How an app registration becomes an enterprise application
- Define the application. Register it in Microsoft Entra ID and configure its identity, intended audience, redirect URI, credentials, and API permissions.
- Provision a tenant-specific identity. When the app is used or consented to in a tenant, that tenant has a service principal representing the app locally. Microsoft’s portal instructions for registering an app and creating a service principal describe this process.
- Govern the local instance. The tenant’s administrators can inspect the enterprise application, its assignments, and its granted permissions, and can revoke access when needed.
For a single-tenant app, the application is intended for one organization’s Entra tenant. For a multitenant app, the publisher maintains the application object in its tenant, while each customer tenant that provisions the app has its own service principal. The customer administrator governs that local service principal; the publisher’s registration does not replace the customer’s tenant controls.
Choose the intended audience before registering
The supported account types setting determines who can sign in, so choose it to match the app’s real audience rather than as a convenience. Microsoft’s registration quickstart distinguishes single-tenant use, multitenant use across organizational tenants, and options that include personal Microsoft accounts. It recommends single-tenant registration for most applications; multitenancy fits applications designed for multiple organizations, such as SaaS.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- One organization: choose a single-tenant configuration when only users in your own organization should use the app.
- Multiple organizations: choose multitenancy when customers in separate Entra tenants are an intended audience, and plan for each tenant’s consent and local service-principal governance.
- Personal Microsoft accounts: include them only if the application is meant to support that audience.
Secure the application and its tenant instance
Registration does not by itself grant access to every resource. Access depends on the permissions configured and granted, and on the identity model used by the workload. Microsoft’s security best practices for application properties cover the main controls to review.
Use an appropriate identity type
For an Azure-hosted workload that does not need to sign users in, act as an API resource, or operate across multiple tenants, consider a managed identity. Microsoft describes managed identities as secure by default and lower-maintenance. If an automated tool needs an identity but a managed identity is not suitable, Microsoft recommends a service principal rather than a user identity. See Microsoft’s service principal guidance and its application security recommendations.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Protect credentials and ownership
- Inventory certificates and secrets, and restrict who can create, replace, or remove them.
- Track credential expiry and rotation so an expiring credential does not unexpectedly interrupt the application.
- Review app owners and maintain ownership continuity; remove or investigate unused applications as part of lifecycle hygiene.
Microsoft includes credentials among the application properties that need security review. Its app management guidance also addresses managing applications and their lifecycle.
Keep redirect URIs within the authentication boundary
Register only redirect URIs on domains your organization owns and controls. Review them for abandoned or unsafe endpoints: a redirect is part of the authentication boundary, not just a setup field. Microsoft’s security guidance covers redirect URI protection.

Grant only necessary permissions
Determine whether the app needs delegated permissions, which operate on behalf of a signed-in user, or application permissions, which allow app-only access. Check the requested scopes or roles against the workload’s actual needs and the resource data they expose. Avoid granting broader access than required, especially when admin consent would authorize powerful permissions. Use Microsoft’s permission review guidance to inspect permissions granted to enterprise applications.
Govern consent deliberately
Consent authorizes access to protected resources under defined permissions; it is not a harmless confirmation step. Limit user consent to approved applications and consider verified publishers as a user-consent control. Microsoft documents these settings in Configure how users consent to applications.

Review the service principal in the tenant
Use Enterprise applications to inventory service principals, inspect assignments and granted permissions, and revoke access that is excessive or suspicious. For multitenant applications, this review belongs in each customer tenant where the app is provisioned. Microsoft explains permission review in its enterprise application permissions documentation.

| Decision | Use when | Security implication |
|---|---|---|
| Single-tenant registration | The app is for one organization. | Restricts the intended audience to that organization’s tenant. |
| Multitenant registration | The app is designed for multiple organizations, such as a SaaS product. | Each customer tenant may have its own service principal to govern, including local permissions and consent. |
| Managed identity | A suitable Azure-hosted workload needs an identity and does not need user sign-in, act as a resource/API, or span multiple tenants. | Microsoft describes this option as secure by default and lower-maintenance for suitable workloads. |
| Service principal | An automated tool needs an identity and a managed identity is unsuitable. | Prefer this over a user identity for automation, and manage its permissions and credentials carefully. |
