In March 2025, some new Outlook users found that selecting Go back to classic Outlook closed the app instead of opening Microsoft’s download guidance. Microsoft says it fixed that specific problem; its notice was last updated March 27, 2025. If the button still fails for you, Microsoft points to a Store link for installing classic Outlook. This is a historical, fixed issue—not confirmation that every Windows 11 user is affected now.
What broke in new Outlook?
The affected control was Go back to classic Outlook in new Outlook. Microsoft’s known-issue notice says the button did not open the support article for downloading classic Outlook, the new Outlook application closed, and classic Outlook was not installed as a result. That describes a failure in the navigation or download route; it does not establish that classic Outlook itself universally failed to launch.
Windows Latest reported reproducing the behavior on a Windows 11 24H2 PC: after selecting the control, a feedback form appeared, and skipping it closed new Outlook without opening the expected download page. That is the outlet’s reported test, not an independent test of the issue.
Is the Go back to classic Outlook button still broken?
Microsoft Support’s notice says, “The Outlook team has fixed this issue.” The page was last updated March 27, 2025. That status applies to the specific reported defect; it is not a guarantee that a particular device cannot encounter a separate installation, account, or app problem.

Go back to classic Outlook vs. Try the new Outlook toggle
These controls appear in different apps and do different jobs. Treating them as one toggle can lead to troubleshooting the wrong problem.

If the Try the new Outlook toggle is missing or unresponsive
Microsoft Learn identifies several reasons this separate control may be unavailable. Check eligibility and device management before considering registry changes.
Check Windows and Outlook eligibility
For the deployment scenario in Microsoft’s guidance, Windows 10 build 1809 (17763) or later is required. The toggle may also be unavailable with an unsupported Office update channel or a non-subscription Outlook edition.

Check the account and network
Some account types, including POP and on-premises Exchange, can affect toggle availability. Microsoft also lists sovereign-network restrictions as a possible factor. A missing toggle therefore does not by itself indicate that Outlook is broken.
Check whether the device is managed
An administrator can control the toggle through cloud policy. Microsoft also documents the HideNewOutlookToggle registry key as a setting that controls its visibility. On a work or school device, first ask the administrator whether policy or deployment eligibility explains the missing control; do not make registry edits casually.
If the toggle is visible but does not respond
Microsoft’s deployment guidance says security-related installation problems can cause a visible Try toggle to be unresponsive. That is distinct from the 2025 Go back button defect, so troubleshoot the installation path rather than assuming the historical issue has returned.

Microsoft says new Outlook became generally available in August 2024 and documents the Try toggle in classic Outlook, along with the option to switch back from new Outlook for eligible users. Its automatic-switch guidance concerns specified personal and small-business scenarios; it does not establish that every Windows 11 user was forced to move.
