Microsoft’s Azure Front Door and Azure CDN disruption on October 29, 2025 affected Microsoft 365 among other services, but the available Azure incident review does not establish exactly how Teams or Outlook failed. Microsoft described uneven connection timeouts and DNS errors—not a uniform, all-user outage. Impact began at 15:41 UTC and was mitigated at 00:05 UTC on October 30, with availability improving gradually from 18:30 UTC.
What happened in the Azure outage?
The incident involved Azure Front Door (AFD) and Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN), which route traffic through globally distributed edge sites. Microsoft’s post-incident review says incompatible customer configuration metadata was processed by edge servers, causing crashes across multiple sites. AFD’s internal DNS service was also affected, producing intermittent DNS resolution errors for some requests. Customers and Microsoft services using the affected systems experienced connection timeouts and DNS problems.
Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 among the affected services, alongside Azure offerings including Azure Active Directory B2C, Azure App Service, Azure Communication Services, Azure Portal, Azure SQL Database, and Azure Static Web Apps. The Azure review points to Microsoft 365 incident MO1181369 for details about the suite-level impact. Without those details, it would be inaccurate to claim that every Microsoft 365 user, or all Teams and Outlook users, experienced the same failure.
The Associated Press also reported disruption to Office 365, Minecraft, and third-party services. Those reports provide context, not a definitive inventory of affected services or proof that Azure was the sole cause of every reported problem.

Did the outage take down Teams and Outlook?
Microsoft’s Azure review confirms that Microsoft 365 was among the affected services, but it does not identify Teams or Outlook individually or describe their specific failure modes. It therefore supports saying that the Azure disruption affected Microsoft 365 services, not that Teams and Outlook were completely unavailable to everyone. For product-specific details, consult Microsoft 365 incident MO1181369 in Microsoft’s incident records.
Why did Azure Front Door and CDN fail?
Microsoft traced the incident to incompatible customer configuration metadata that reached AFD and CDN edge servers. The metadata caused crashes at multiple edge sites. Problems with AFD’s internal DNS service then added intermittent name-resolution failures for a subset of requests.

Microsoft says corrupt metadata was first introduced at 15:35 UTC. A configuration protection system activated at 15:43 UTC and stopped new and in-flight customer configuration changes from propagating, but it did not prevent the incompatible metadata from progressing through the protection system. A delayed asynchronous processing task later triggered the crashes.

How to check whether Microsoft services are down now
For a current incident, use Microsoft’s official channels. The public Azure status page is for incidents with broad or significant impact. Azure Service Health provides information relevant to a customer’s environment, including incidents, planned maintenance, and service advisories; administrators can configure alerts.
- Azure status page: check for broad-impact service issues.
- Azure Service Health: check for tenant-relevant incidents, planned maintenance, and advisories, and set up alerts.
A live status page reports current conditions; it cannot establish whether a particular person or organization experienced a past incident. For Teams or Outlook symptoms, use Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 incident details rather than assuming every Azure problem affected those apps in the same way.
