To set up a new Surface Laptop, plug it into power, follow Windows’ on-screen instructions, choose a sign-in and migration method, then configure sign-in security and check for updates. The steps below apply broadly to Surface devices; the available features can vary by Laptop model and Windows setup options.
1. Power on and follow Windows setup
- Connect the Surface Laptop to power. Microsoft recommends keeping it charged while you set it up.
- Turn it on and follow the prompts. Choose the requested region, language, network and other Windows options on screen. Microsoft’s Surface setup guide describes this first-run process.
2. Choose how to sign in
Windows setup offers the option to sign in with a Microsoft account or create one. Microsoft says an account can connect the Surface with services such as Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Edge and Microsoft Store, and can be used to restore an existing Windows backup. If you plan to use those services or restore a backup, use the Microsoft account associated with them.
For details on signing in and out, see Microsoft’s Surface sign-in guide.
3. Choose how to move files and settings
Pick the route that matches your old PC and backup situation. Restoring a Windows backup and using PC-to-PC transfer are separate options; neither should be treated as a promise to copy every app, credential and file.

| Route | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Restore a Windows backup | You have an existing Windows backup associated with the Microsoft account you use during setup. | The new Surface may offer the option to restore it during setup. Microsoft’s Surface backup guide explains backup options. |
| PC-to-PC transfer | You have the old PC available and both devices and the account meet Microsoft’s eligibility conditions. | Microsoft’s feature requires a new PC running Windows 11 version 2024 or later and eligible Microsoft-account conditions. It is not currently available in China. Check the current PC-to-PC transfer requirements before starting. |
| Set up without either transfer | You prefer a clean setup or do not meet the transfer requirements. | Copy personal files using your preferred method, install your apps again and sign in to the services you use. |
PC-to-PC transfer has important exclusions: it does not transfer installed applications, OneDrive files, saved passwords or credentials, or data on BitLocker-encrypted drives. Install apps again, sign in to OneDrive, and make a separate plan for excluded files and credentials.
4. Set up Windows Hello if your model supports it
Windows Hello can let you sign in using a supported biometric method. On the Surface, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and follow the available setup choices. The hardware differs by model: Microsoft lists face recognition on several Surface Laptop generations, while fingerprint sign-in is available on Surface Laptop 13-inch (1st Edition) and Laptop Go models equipped with a fingerprint power button. Check the specifications for your exact model rather than assuming it has a camera or fingerprint reader that supports Hello.

5. Turn on Find my device
To enable location-based device finding, open Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device and turn on the setting. Microsoft says the Surface must be signed in with a Microsoft account, connected to the internet and have enough battery to send its location for the feature to work.
