There is no evidence-backed universal winner here, so choose by the work you want done, app requirements, account access, and whether you specifically need on-device processing.
Which AI assistants work on Windows PCs?
Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini all have documented Windows desktop experiences. Their requirements and features differ, and a feature list is not a comparative test of answer quality.

Which assistant is best for the way you use your PC?
Choose Copilot for help tied to Windows or what is on screen
Copilot is a natural first option if you want an assistant to refer to an open app or screen, find supported files, or point you toward a Windows setting. Microsoft says Copilot Vision can provide visual guidance in browser windows or apps, and the app can search supported local and synced files, including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, PDF, and JSON. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is enabled for every account or region. Microsoft Support
For practical PC questions such as “What graphics card do I have?”, “Do I have enough space for a 100GB game?” or “What’s my current CPU usage?”, Microsoft documents PC insights as an opt-in, experimental feature that is gradually rolling out. Choose ChatGPT or Gemini for a quick general-purpose desktop assistant
ChatGPT’s Windows app provides a keyboard shortcut window for questions, file uploads, image generation, and conversations. Its cited Windows documentation describes the app as an early version and notes that some features available on the web or macOS may be absent. Check the current app listing and your plan before relying on a particular feature.
Gemini’s Windows app is another quick-access option for drafting, summarizing, brainstorming, coding questions, and image analysis. Its documented Windows requirements do not mean that it runs offline: Google lists a stable internet connection as a requirement.

Match the assistant to the task, not a claimed quality ranking
All three products document workflows for general questions and productivity tasks, but the available evidence does not establish that one produces more accurate or better answers than the others. Try the task you actually care about—such as summarizing a document, drafting an email, or explaining an error—and consider how well the app works with your account and files.
Do you need a Copilot+ PC to use an AI assistant?
No. A Copilot+ PC is not a general requirement for the consumer Copilot, ChatGPT, or Gemini apps described here. Microsoft’s NPU requirement applies to particular Windows AI APIs and certain on-device capabilities, not to installing or using these consumer assistant apps.

Microsoft describes Windows AI APIs as processing data locally using an NPU and states in its Windows AI FAQ, “Input data is not sent to Microsoft servers.” That statement is specifically about those local APIs; it does not describe all use of Copilot or other cloud-based assistants. Foundry Local is another separate developer technology. Microsoft says it can run inference on Windows devices with a DirectX 12-capable GPU. After a model is downloaded, inference input and output stay on the device and cached inference can continue offline; downloading the model initially requires internet access. These are details about Foundry Local, not prerequisites or privacy guarantees for consumer assistant apps. Microsoft Learn

What to check before installing or signing in
- Windows version and hardware: Compare your PC with the vendor’s listed requirements. ChatGPT specifies Windows 10 build 17763.0 or later and x64 or ARM64; Gemini specifies Windows 10+, 8 GB RAM, 200 MB free disk space, and internet.
- Account access: ChatGPT’s cited Windows app page lists particular paid plans for its early app version. Gemini requires a Google account, and an organization-managed account needs administrator enablement. Copilot experiences vary by account and context.
- Feature availability: Microsoft says Copilot features can roll out gradually and vary by availability. Its October 2025 blog described Copilot Vision as available worldwide in markets where Copilot is offered, but that dated vendor statement is not a promise that every feature works identically for every account today. - Privacy expectations: Do not assume a consumer chat is processed locally just because a feature is integrated into Windows. Microsoft says PC insights asks permission before accessing relevant system or file data and is opt-in; its support page says personal files and system information are not stored or used for model training, while conversation activity may be used depending on settings. How to get started
- Try Copilot: On a new Windows 11 PC, look for the Copilot app. If it is not installed, get it from Microsoft Store. Open it with the Copilot keyboard key or Windows+C; enable “Hey, Copilot” only if you want the optional wake phrase. Feature access depends on your account and context. Microsoft Support
- Try ChatGPT: Check your Windows version and processor architecture against OpenAI’s requirements, then install the Windows app if your account is eligible. Use Alt + Space to open its companion window. OpenAI Help Center

In an October 16, 2025 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft reported that people “engage with Copilot twice as much” when using voice compared with text. Microsoft did not describe the sample or methodology in the cited passage, so this is a vendor-reported engagement figure—not independent evidence that voice improves productivity or that the result applies to other assistants.
