What Copilot can do on iPhone
When Microsoft announced general availability of the mobile app on January 16, 2024, it described access to GPT-4, DALL-E 3 image creation, and using images from a phone in a chat. Microsoft’s current App Store listing also describes work-oriented assistance such as drafting, summarizing, handling files, and connecting with Microsoft 365 apps. Which features appear—and any limits on their use—can vary by account and license.

The iPhone app followed a quiet holiday-period launch on iOS, iPadOS, and Android, reported by TechCrunch on January 3, 2024. Microsoft’s January announcement made general availability official; it did not mean every account received every capability at once.
Standalone Copilot, Copilot Pro, and Microsoft 365 Copilot
These names refer to different ways of using Copilot, not interchangeable access to the same set of work data and features.

| Option | Typical account context | What to expect on iPhone | Price information in the cited launch announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone Copilot app | Consumer or other supported account | AI chat, with capabilities such as image creation or image input depending on availability and account conditions. It does not automatically grant access to an employer’s Microsoft 365 data. | Free to download; the current App Store listing says some features require licenses. |
| Copilot Pro | Individual subscription | A paid upgrade path for higher-tier AI capabilities. The January 2024 announcement presented it as an individual option; the exact current feature set and price are not established by that announcement. | $20 per month in Microsoft’s 2024 announcement; this is a dated launch price, not a verified current price. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Work or business account, subject to licensing and admin controls | Work-focused Microsoft 365 integrations and, for eligible users, reasoning over organizational data. Access depends on license, rollout, and administrator settings. | $30 per person per month for one to 299 seats in Microsoft’s 2024 announcement; this is a dated launch price, not a verified current price. |
Microsoft also described Copilot in the Microsoft 365 mobile app as a separate experience from the standalone Copilot app. Its January 2024 announcement said users with a Microsoft account would be able to export generated content to Word or PDF. Later Microsoft 365 release notes describe iOS features including launching Copilot with an iPhone Action button or Siri, Copilot Notebooks in OneNote on iPhone and iPad, and— for affected enterprise users—Copilot Chat reasoning over Outlook inbox, calendar, meetings, and other work data. These are account- and rollout-dependent integrations, not a promise that every free consumer account can access enterprise information.

No. The standalone app is free to download, so you can install it without buying Copilot Pro. Consider a paid plan only if the features and limits offered to your account do not meet your needs; check Microsoft’s current plan details before subscribing because the cited prices are from 2024 and may have changed.
