Microsoft has not released a Surface Duo 3, and there are no confirmed retail display specifications or release date. Reporting says the planned successor moved away from the Surface Duo’s two-panel design toward one internal folding display and an outer cover screen. Those details describe a canceled project, not a finished product.
Was the Surface Duo 3 a real product?
Microsoft has not announced or released a Surface Duo 3. Microsoft’s product and support pages do not provide a Duo 3 launch announcement, price, final display size, dimensions, or availability. Windows Central reported that Microsoft canceled the planned device before it shipped.
That distinction matters: reports about the project’s intended design are not specifications for a device consumers can buy. There is no confirmed Duo 3 screen resolution, panel technology, brightness, crease measurement, or hands-on test result.
What display was reportedly planned for the Duo 3?
Windows Central reported in January 2023 that Microsoft had scrapped its plans for another two-screen Duo and pivoted toward a conventional foldable layout: one folding display inside, with a separate cover display on the outside. A 2023 follow-up described the project as canceled and never shipped.

In May 2026, a further report associated the canceled project with a Microsoft patent exploring a spring-loaded hinge. The patent described an approach intended to make opening easier and distribute pressure across the folding display. A patent records technical exploration; it does not establish that Microsoft completed the design or plans to release it.

What is confirmed about the Surface Duo 2 display?
The Duo 2 is the closest released Microsoft device to use as a display baseline. Microsoft’s 2021 fact sheet describes dual PixelSense Fusion Displays that measure 8.3 inches when open, with AMOLED technology, 2688 × 1892 resolution, 90Hz adaptive refresh, maximum brightness of 800 nits, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. These are Duo 2 specifications, not evidence of the Duo 3’s planned panel characteristics.

Microsoft describes the original Surface Duo as having two high-resolution PixelSense Fusion displays totaling 8.1 inches and a 360-degree hinge. Its support documentation also states that the first-generation device has reached its end-of-servicing date; that notice should not be treated as a statement about Duo 2 support.
