The fixes were version-specific: KB5010196 was for Windows Server 2019, while contemporary reporting identified KB5010215 for Windows Server 2012 R2. These are historical updates, not general fixes for Remote Desktop trouble today.
What the January 2022 Remote Desktop issue did
Microsoft described an issue that could prevent Remote Desktop access to a server. In some circumstances, the server could stop responding; users might also see a black screen, slow sign-in, and poor general performance. Microsoft’s KB5010196 support article documents those symptoms for Windows Server 2019.
This was an availability and performance problem, not a security vulnerability: Microsoft classified KB5010196 as a non-security quality update. The available reporting does not establish an incident rate or count of affected customers.
Which update applied to each Windows Server version?
The emergency packages were tied to particular Windows Server releases, not interchangeable alternatives. Microsoft’s directly documented KB5010196 entry is for Server 2019; KB5010215’s association with Server 2012 R2 is reported by BleepingComputer’s January 4, 2022 article, updated January 5.

The January 4 report initially said that packages for Server 2019 and Server 2012 R2 were available; its January 5 update listed fixes for all four affected versions. The distinction matters if you are looking up which KB fixes Remote Desktop problems on Server 2019 or 2012 R2: do not install a package intended for another server release.
How KB5010196 was distributed
For KB5010196, Microsoft’s “How to get this update” table listed the Microsoft Update Catalog as the available route. It did not list Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, or WSUS as available for that package. Contemporary reporting described the updates as standalone packages and said enterprise administrators could import them into WSUS manually; that is historical guidance, not a recommendation for a current deployment.

- Windows server license is not included
Microsoft’s KB5010196 page specifies KB5005112, the August 10, 2021 servicing stack update, as a prerequisite. Do not assume the same prerequisite applies to KB5010215 or another version’s update: follow the instructions for that exact KB and Windows Server release.

KB5010196 and KB5010215 addressed a specific 2022 incident. They should not be treated as blanket fixes for a current “Remote Desktop won’t connect to my Windows Server” problem or a Remote Desktop black screen after an update. First establish the affected server version, OS build, recent update history, and precise symptoms; then use Microsoft’s current release information and update-specific guidance to identify a relevant fix.

- Identify the server release and build. Check the server’s About/System information or run
winverlocally, and record the full Windows Server version and OS build. - Review recent servicing. Check installed update history and note the KB number and installation date associated with the change in Remote Desktop behavior.
- Check the release-specific guidance. Consult Microsoft’s Windows Server release information and the applicable resolved-issues page for that release, then follow the instructions for the matching update.
- Use the KB’s own installation requirements. Confirm its supported Windows Server version, distribution method, and prerequisites before installing or importing a package.
For example, Microsoft’s Server 2019 release history records a later out-of-band update, KB5010791, on January 18, 2022, after KB5010196. That is one reason the January 4 build should be understood in its servicing context rather than assumed to be the latest fix. Release-specific issue tracking also matters: Microsoft’s Windows Server 2022 resolved-issues page separately documents a later Remote Desktop Services incident associated with the September 8, 2026 security update and a September 14 out-of-band resolution. That Server 2022 entry does not establish the status or remedy for other Windows Server versions.
