The assistant was designed to respond to natural-language requests and help with work such as drafting, summarizing, and transforming documents. Microsoft later described Microsoft 365 Copilot as spanning Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with Microsoft 365 Chat drawing on organizational work content.
What Microsoft announced
In March 2023, Microsoft introduced Copilot for work as an AI assistant built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Demonstrations included drafting content and turning a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation. The announcement followed Microsoft’s January 2023 statement that it would deploy OpenAI models across consumer and enterprise products, including through Azure OpenAI Service for developers. That January description reflects the arrangement Microsoft announced at the time, not a claim about every current cloud deployment. Microsoft’s January 2023 partnership announcement and Microsoft WorkLab’s March 2023 Copilot announcement provide the original context.
How Microsoft described Copilot’s use of work data
Microsoft’s May 2023 Build material described Copilot as combining large language models with Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 app data. In its example, a user could ask in natural language for a team status update based on meetings, emails, and chats. The description explains the intended role of organizational context: the assistant could use information already available across work tools to respond to a request, rather than treating every task as an isolated prompt. It is a dated product description, not confirmation of how every present-day Copilot feature accesses or handles data. Microsoft’s Build 2023 Book of News describes that approach.
Which apps and experience Microsoft named
In September 2023, Microsoft described Microsoft 365 Copilot as covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. It also presented Microsoft 365 Chat as a central Copilot experience able to work across emails, meetings, chats, documents, and the web. That breadth was intended to make cross-app questions possible—for example, asking for a synthesis that draws on several kinds of work material instead of opening each item separately. Microsoft’s September 2023 product announcement records the app list and Chat description.

Availability and the historical launch price
Microsoft said enterprise general availability would begin November 1, 2023, and announced a launch price of $30 per user per month. Those are historical terms announced in September 2023; they should not be read as current pricing, eligibility, or plan availability. Current terms are not established by the dated announcements cited here.
How the OpenAI relationship fits—and what it does not establish
The Office announcement was part of Microsoft’s broader relationship with OpenAI, but it does not mean that every Copilot capability was, or remains, powered by one particular OpenAI model. OpenAI’s April 2026 account says Microsoft’s license to OpenAI intellectual property runs through 2032 and is non-exclusive; Microsoft’s February 2026 statement describes the partnership as continuing. Neither statement identifies the model behind each Copilot feature today. See OpenAI’s April 2026 partnership account and Microsoft’s February 2026 statement.

What the announcement says about productivity
Microsoft presented Copilot as a way to assist with work, but the cited announcements do not independently establish a measured productivity gain. Microsoft WorkLab attributes to CEO Satya Nadella the view that the “copilot for work” would give people more agency through natural language. The same company-published article attributes to chief scientist Jaime Teevan the observation that AI can help her think more critically and augment how she thinks. These are attributed perspectives from Microsoft, not independent evidence of product outcomes. Microsoft WorkLab’s article provides the context for both quotations.
