To set a reminder in Microsoft To Do, open a task, select Remind me, and choose a preset or Pick a date & time. A due date is separate: it marks when the task is due, while a reminder sets when To Do should prompt you.

Microsoft Support describes the control this way: “Select Remind me and choose when you’ll be reminded: later today, tomorrow, next week, or a date and time you pick.” (Microsoft Support: Add due dates and reminders in Microsoft To Do.) To remove a reminder, open the task details and remove the existing reminder there. (Microsoft Support: Use a screen reader to work with tasks in To Do.)
Reminder versus due date
A due date records the date a task is due. A reminder sets the time you want To Do to prompt you. You can use either or both, depending on whether you need a deadline, a prompt, or both. Tasks with scheduled dates appear in the Planned smart list. (Microsoft Support: Add due dates and reminders in Microsoft To Do; Microsoft Support: Manage tasks with To Do in Outlook.)
Set a reminder by typing a date or time
On supported versions, you can type a date or time phrase into a new task title. For example, Microsoft documents phrases such as “tomorrow 5pm” and “Apr 27 10am” as ways to set a reminder when the task is saved. Phrases such as “tomorrow,” “Apr 27,” or “Friday” can be recognized as due dates instead. (Microsoft Support: Smart Due Date, Reminder Recognition in Microsoft To Do.)

Because availability depends on platform, version, and language, use the task-details Remind me control if the typing shortcut is unavailable. Microsoft To Do is available on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and the web, but that broader app availability does not mean date recognition works on every platform. (Microsoft Support: Smart Due Date, Reminder Recognition in Microsoft To Do; Microsoft Support: Welcome to Microsoft To Do.)
Keep a recognized date out of the task title
If To Do highlights a word or phrase that you meant to keep as part of the title, press Backspace to unrecognize it. You can also turn off Recognize dates and times in task titles in Settings. A separate setting controls whether recognized date or time text remains in the saved title. (Microsoft Support: Smart Due Date, Reminder Recognition in Microsoft To Do.)

Microsoft To Do stores tasks on Exchange Online and integrates with Outlook Tasks. Outlook on the web or Outlook.com also has a task-details workflow with Remind me, and scheduled tasks appear in Planned. (Microsoft Support: Set up Microsoft To Do; Microsoft Support: Manage tasks with To Do in Outlook.) If you expected a notification, first check that the reminder is attached to the correct task and scheduled for the time you intended. Also check device notification settings for To Do. Microsoft notes that new features roll out gradually, so a control may not yet appear in every app instance. (Microsoft Support: Use a screen reader to work with tasks in To Do.)

Shared-list activity notifications are different
Notifications about activity on a shared list are not the same as a reminder attached to one of your tasks. Shared-list activity notifications require To Do notifications to be enabled on the device. On Android, Microsoft says push notifications for shared-list activity use Google’s notification system, so a Google account must be connected in device settings. (Microsoft Support: Get notifications for shared lists.)
Routine reminders on Android are another feature
Android’s Routine reminders are recurring prompts at selected times and days to help plan the day. They open Suggestions; they are separate from a reminder set on an individual task. (Microsoft Support: Using Routine reminders on Android.)
