Sony’s official PS Remote Play documentation says a PS4 or PS5 is required to stream games to other devices, while PlayStation Portal requires a PS5. Portal is still Sony’s dedicated handheld option; Sony also documents cloud streaming for eligible catalog games. Check Sony’s current eligibility and catalog details, since availability can change.

Logitech G Cloud: a standalone handheld
Logitech explicitly lists PS5 Remote Play as a supported use for the G Cloud handheld gaming device, alongside other streaming and cloud-gaming options. Unlike a phone-controller setup, it does not require you to attach your phone to play.
This is the more natural alternative if you want a separate handheld for multiple streaming and remote-play services. Logitech’s product information establishes support and intended uses, not that G Cloud delivers the same performance or experience as Portal. Compare its current requirements and supported services with your own setup before choosing it.

Phone plus Backbone One-PlayStation Edition
A compatible phone and Backbone One-PlayStation Edition turn a phone into a handheld-style Remote Play setup. Sony’s US Remote Play page says iPhones running iOS 15 or later are compatible with the PlayStation Edition. Backbone says Android users who want PS Remote Play need the PlayStation Edition, so do not assume another Backbone model will meet that requirement.
Check Sony’s current mobile Remote Play requirements and Backbone’s compatibility information for your exact phone, operating system, and controller model before buying. A phone-based setup can be convenient if you already own a compatible device; the trade-off is that the screen and controller are separate pieces rather than a dedicated handheld.

Use PS Remote Play on another supported device
You may not need to buy a handheld or mobile controller at all. Sony’s app supports Remote Play on supported phones, tablets, and computers, with platform-specific app and control requirements. The official app is free to download, but streaming to another device still requires a PS4 or PS5 console. Check Sony’s current supported-device guidance for the platform you plan to use.
This option offers flexibility if you already have a suitable device, but the controls and overall setup depend on that device. Confirm what controls your chosen platform supports rather than assuming every setup will work like Portal.

- Console: Remote Play to other devices requires a PS4 or PS5; Portal specifically requires a PS5.
- Phone and software: For a phone setup, confirm the exact device and operating system against Sony’s current requirements.
- Controller edition: Backbone’s Android guidance specifies the PlayStation Edition for PS Remote Play. Confirm the exact model rather than relying on a broad compatibility claim.
