To compare Microsoft (MSFT) with other large-cap technology stocks, compare the businesses and their financial performance first, then compare their valuations using the same market-price date and clearly aligned reporting periods. A share price—or a lower price-to-earnings ratio on its own—cannot tell you whether one stock is better value.

Start with what each company sells

Large-cap technology companies do not earn money in the same way. Microsoft spans software, cloud services, and other businesses; its latest annual filing is its FY2026 Form 10-K, dated June 30, 2026 and filed July 29, 2026. Use that filing to examine reported results, segments, capital needs, risks, and management discussion. Microsoft’s SEC filing record provides the filing record.

A useful peer set can include Alphabet (GOOGL/GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (META), and NVIDIA (NVDA), but treat them as comparison lenses rather than identical substitutes for Microsoft:

  • Alphabet: advertising-led Google Services alongside Google Cloud and other businesses.
  • Amazon: commerce and cloud computing.
  • Apple: devices and services.
  • Meta Platforms: advertising-led platforms.
  • NVIDIA: semiconductors and accelerated-computing products.

For each company, look at both revenue and operating income by segment where reported. A segment can contribute substantial sales without contributing a similar share of profit. Alphabet’s FY2025 filing, for example, reports $402.836 billion in total revenue, including $342.721 billion from Google Services and $58.705 billion from Google Cloud. Google Cloud reported $13.910 billion in operating income that year. These are Alphabet’s reported fiscal-year figures, not a direct comparison with Microsoft’s differently timed fiscal year. Alphabet’s FY2025 annual report has the segment detail.

Compare performance on aligned periods

Once you understand the business mix, compare results over matching periods. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30; Alphabet’s ends December 31. Label each company’s period and avoid treating the same calendar label as an automatically comparable year. Before drawing conclusions, verify the latest report period for every peer.

  • Growth: Compare revenue, operating income, and cash-flow growth over comparable periods. Use organic growth where the company discloses it, and do not let one quarter or one fast-growing segment stand in for the whole company.
  • Profitability: Compare gross and operating margins, plus segment margins when available. This shows how much of sales growth translates into operating profit.
  • Cash generation: Review operating cash flow and free cash flow, using the same free-cash-flow definition for every company. Accounting earnings and cash available after investment can diverge.
  • Capital intensity: Compare capital expenditure, depreciation, capacity additions, and evidence of demand or utilization. Spending can support future growth, but the return on that investment matters too.

Account for investment, balance-sheet exposure, and shareholder returns

Cloud and AI infrastructure spending can materially affect how much cash a company retains and how much capacity it may have to support future demand. Alphabet reported $91.4 billion in capital expenditures and $164.7 billion in operating cash flow for calendar year 2025. Its management expected technical-infrastructure investment to increase significantly in 2026; that is forward-looking guidance, not a realized 2026 result. Compare such spending with cash generation and later operating performance rather than assuming spending itself guarantees a return.

Check balance-sheet and company-specific risks alongside operating results. Relevant items include cash, debt, leases, litigation and regulation, customer concentration, and supply constraints. Similar market capitalizations do not mean companies have the same financial exposure or downside risks.

For shareholder returns, consider dividends and repurchases alongside stock-based compensation and changes in share count. Microsoft’s FY2026 filing record reports repurchases of 36 million shares for $16.7 billion in FY2026, compared with 31 million shares for $13.0 billion in FY2025. Those are company-reported fiscal-year totals, not a current valuation signal. Repurchase dollars alone do not show whether each remaining share represents a larger ownership stake; check the net change in shares outstanding.

Compare valuation only after the business analysis

Valuation metrics answer different questions. Use more than one where appropriate, and specify what each numerator and denominator represents:

  • P/E: Relates share price to earnings per share. State whether earnings are trailing reported results or forward estimates, and whether the figures are adjusted.
  • EV/operating income or EV/EBITDA: Compares enterprise value with operating earnings or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. State the period and any adjustments used.
  • Price-to-sales: Relates market value to revenue, but does not account for differences in profitability.
  • Free-cash-flow yield: Relates free cash flow to market value. It is meaningful only when the free-cash-flow definition and period are consistent.

For any peer comparison, record the market-price date, reporting period, share class, and whether the metric uses trailing results or forward estimates. Enterprise-value measures also require consistent treatment of cash, debt, and other included items. A higher multiple may reflect different expectations or business economics; it does not by itself prove that a stock is overpriced. Likewise, a lower multiple does not establish that it is a bargain.

The available cited company filings do not provide a synchronized current market-price date and peer valuation set. So a current ranking of Microsoft against its peers cannot be established from these figures alone. To build one, gather each company’s valuation inputs for a common date and align their reporting periods and metric definitions.

A repeatable comparison checklist

  1. Choose peers deliberately. Note how each business differs from Microsoft and why it is relevant to the comparison.
  2. Read the latest annual and quarterly filings. Record each report’s period, segment revenue and operating income, and company-specific risks.
  3. Align operating measures. Compare growth, margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow on consistent periods and definitions.
  4. Check investment and ownership effects. Put infrastructure spending beside cash generation; assess repurchases alongside stock-based compensation and share-count changes.
  5. Calculate valuation from one market-price date. Label trailing versus forward inputs, adjustments, share classes, and the reporting period used.
  6. Interpret the multiples in business context. Ask what growth, profitability, investment needs, and risks the valuation appears to reflect; do not treat a single ratio as a verdict.
