They are different kinds of hardware: Portal is a standalone remote player, while Backbone One attaches to a phone. Neither makes streamed gameplay independent of your network quality.

What each device actually does
PlayStation Portal is a self-contained PS5 remote player
Portal supplies its own display and integrated controls. Sony specifies an 8-inch 1080p LCD capable of up to 60 fps, plus DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games. These are product specifications, not a guarantee of a particular game’s frame rate or responsiveness: the game and connection affect the experience.
For console Remote Play, Portal connects to a PS5. It does not support PS4 Remote Play. The PS5 must be connected to broadband, paired with the Portal, and powered on or in Rest Mode. The console and game must also be available for Remote Play.

Backbone One turns a compatible phone into a controller setup
Backbone One is a controller that connects to a phone; the phone provides the display and runs the relevant app or game. That makes it more flexible across supported mobile games and services, but it also means the experience depends on having a compatible phone, a fitting connector, and the appropriate app or service.
Backbone offers different editions and Lightning and USB-C versions. Check the exact phone model, port, operating-system support, and case clearance before choosing a variant. Features can differ by version: for example, Backbone’s product page describes second-generation magnetic adapters and pass-through charging on its Lightning listing, so do not assume every edition has identical accessories or specifications.

Compatibility and setup: check these before choosing
For PlayStation Portal
- Console: A PS5 is required for Portal Remote Play; PS4 is unsupported.
- Network and pairing: Connect the PS5 to broadband, pair the Portal with the console, and leave the PS5 powered on or in Rest Mode when you want to connect remotely.
- Connection speed: Sony states a minimum of 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play; network quality affects gameplay.
- Audio: Portal supports 3.5 mm wired audio and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices. Do not assume ordinary Bluetooth audio is supported based on that feature list.
- Media apps: PS5 Media tab apps are not supported through Portal Remote Play.
For Backbone One
- Phone and operating system: Sony lists iOS 15 or later for iPhone and Android 10 or later for Android phones when using Backbone One PlayStation Edition. Check current support for your precise phone model and the relevant app before purchase.
- Connector and fit: Match the Lightning or USB-C version to the phone’s port, and check whether your case must be removed or is supported.
- Game or service: A controller does not make every mobile game, cloud service, or Remote Play setup compatible. Confirm that the game or service supports your phone and controller.
Subscriptions and cloud streaming
PlayStation Plus is not required for Portal’s PS5 Remote Play feature. However, a multiplayer game that requires a PlayStation Plus plan still requires the relevant membership.
Portal cloud streaming is a separate option from Remote Play: Sony says it requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited to eligible titles. Catalogs and availability vary by region and can change. If you want to stream a PlayStation game without your PS5 handling a Remote Play session, verify that cloud streaming and the specific title are available to you.

Which one should you buy?
Choose PlayStation Portal if
- You own a PS5 and want a dedicated handheld screen with integrated PlayStation controls.
- You prefer not to rely on a separate phone for the display and controller setup.
- You want Portal’s selected DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games.
- You are interested in eligible Portal cloud streaming and have the required Premium subscription.
Choose Backbone One if
- You have a compatible phone and want to use it for PS Remote Play or controller-compatible mobile games.
- You want one phone-based setup for multiple supported gaming services, rather than a device dedicated to PlayStation.
- You need a mobile route to PS4 Remote Play, which Portal does not provide.
- You are prepared to verify the exact connector, phone fit, operating system, and service compatibility before buying.
Price and availability
At the time of the cited Backbone product-page listing, Backbone showed a price of $99.99 for a Backbone One Lightning (2nd Gen) listing that was marked sold out. That is one listing, not a market-wide price or a quote for every Backbone model. The cited Sony product page did not provide a stable current price. Check local pricing, stock, included accessories, and the exact model and connector before purchase.
