How the Perfect Dark reboot began
On December 10, 2020, Xbox announced that Perfect Dark would be the first project from The Initiative, a studio established by Xbox. The announcement described it as a secret-agent thriller set in a near-future world and presented the team’s early ideas, not a complete account of the game’s planned features. Xbox Wire’s announcement marked the reboot’s public debut.

The Initiative developed the game in partnership with Crystal Dynamics. The collaboration was reported to have ended when the project was canceled and The Initiative shut down in 2025. Contemporaneous reporting on the cancellation described the partnership’s end.
What the 2024 gameplay footage showed—and did not show
At the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox released the reboot’s first public gameplay footage. It showed Joanna Dark using gadgets, stealth and melee takedowns in a first-person game. The footage confirmed that the project had progressed beyond its 2020 announcement, but it did not establish that the game was close to completion. Xbox did not give the reboot a release window. Why Xbox canceled Perfect Dark
On July 2, 2025, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said in an internal message reproduced by Game Informer: “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio.” The message also said The Initiative was closing.
Booty characterized the decision as part of a broader portfolio adjustment, saying it reflected an effort “to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape.” That is Xbox’s stated rationale. It does not identify a single project-specific cause or provide a detailed account of the reboot’s development.
Was the game revived after the cancellation?
No revival was publicly announced. In September 2025, Windows Central, citing Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, reported that Xbox and Embracer, which owns Crystal Dynamics, explored whether another publisher would take on the game after its cancellation. The report said discussions with Take-Two nearly produced a deal but ended over disagreement about long-term ownership of the Perfect Dark intellectual property.
