Its tools add targeted features for arranging windows, working with text and files, remapping input, finding commands, and customizing everyday workflows. Microsoft’s current overview lists 21 utilities. PowerToys supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or later on x64 and ARM64 processors.
What Microsoft PowerToys is—and how it works
PowerToys is not a replacement for Windows or a single all-in-one application. It is a collection of small tools, each designed to help with a particular task. You can enable or disable utilities individually in PowerToys settings, and use the General settings for preferences such as startup behavior and updates. Microsoft’s PowerToys overview describes the collection and its current utility inventory; the list can change as PowerToys is updated.
PowerToys is free and open source. It is aimed at people who want additional controls or shortcuts for working in Windows, rather than at users looking for a separate operating system or a general-purpose productivity suite.
What each PowerToys utility does
Microsoft’s overview currently lists these 21 utilities. Their availability and details may vary with the installed release.

How to choose between overlapping utilities
Command Palette or PowerToys Run?
Both help you find and launch things, but their documented scope differs. Command Palette covers a broader set of actions, including commands, file search, web browsing, and Windows tools. PowerToys Run is described as a quick app launcher with plugin support. Choose based on whether you mainly want to open apps or access a broader range of commands and tools. Microsoft documents the Command Palette and PowerToys Run separately.
FancyZones or Workspaces?
FancyZones is for defining layouts and positioning windows as you work. Workspaces saves an app arrangement and relaunches those apps into positions. Workspaces does not force apps to open at a specified position: it launches them, then moves and resizes them. Microsoft also says it does not provide snapping capabilities. Use FancyZones for ongoing layout management; use Workspaces when you want to start a saved arrangement of apps. See the Workspaces documentation.

Requirements and installation
Microsoft documents support for Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or later, on x64 or ARM64 processors. The installer bootstrapper installs the stable Edge WebView2 Runtime if it is needed. Check Microsoft’s installation instructions for current installation methods and steps.
Microsoft recommends installing PowerToys through GitHub or Microsoft Store; WinGet and other package-manager methods are also documented. After installation, the overview window introduces the utilities, and the Settings Home view provides access to utility controls and shortcuts.
