The official information available does not establish which option has lower latency, better image quality, or better value at current prices.
What is the main difference?
Portal is a dedicated device for remotely playing compatible games installed on a PS5. Backbone One is a controller accessory used with a compatible phone; you run Sony’s PS Remote Play app on that phone to connect to a PS5 or PS4.

Choose Portal if you want a dedicated PS5 handheld
Portal is the more direct fit if you already have a PS5 and want a screen and PlayStation controls in one device. It remotely plays compatible games installed on your console; it is not a standalone console and does not connect to a PS4. Sony’s PlayStation Portal product information says the PS5 must have broadband access, be powered on or in Rest Mode, and be paired with Portal.
- You need a PlayStation account and a PS5. The game must be compatible and installed on that console.
- Portal requires Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps; Sony recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s stated requirements and recommendation, not a promise of a particular result. Game and network conditions affect performance.
- Some public Wi-Fi networks require an extra validation step through a phone or tablet. Sony says initial setup must be completed on home Wi-Fi.
- Games that require PS VR or PS VR2, or peripherals outside the specified PlayStation controllers, are not supported through Portal. Games that must be streamed on PS5 using PS Plus Premium are not part of the ordinary installed-game remote-play path.

Choose Backbone One if you want to play on your phone
Backbone One makes sense if you would rather use a phone you already own than carry a separate screen. Sony lists Backbone One PlayStation Edition compatibility with iPhone devices running iOS 15 or later and Android phones running Android 10 or later. Those operating-system requirements do not confirm that every phone fits every Backbone model: check the exact phone, connector, and Backbone variant before buying.
To play, install Sony’s PS Remote Play app and connect to your PS5 or PS4. Sony’s Remote Play device compatibility page lists supported devices, while its Remote Play support guide explains setup, including Backbone One PlayStation Edition instructions. Remote Play itself does not make a PS Plus Premium subscription a blanket requirement. An individual game may still require a subscription for online multiplayer.

Does either option need PS Plus Premium?
No Premium subscription is required simply to remotely play compatible games installed on your own PS5 with Portal, or to use PS Remote Play on a phone. Portal’s separate cloud-streaming feature does require PS Plus Premium and is subject to account, country, and game eligibility. Cloud streaming plays eligible games from Sony’s service rather than remotely accessing the installed-game library on your console. Sony’s cloud-streaming support information describes eligibility and broadband requirements; availability and catalogue contents can vary by region and over time.
Multiplayer access is a separate consideration: some games may require PS Plus for online multiplayer regardless of whether you play through Portal or a phone.

How should you decide?
- Pick Portal if you want a dedicated screen and controls, have a PS5, and mostly plan to play compatible games installed on it.
- Pick Backbone One if you want to use a supported phone as the screen, already use or prefer the PS Remote Play app, and have verified that the specific controller model fits your phone.
- Check your connection first if you expect to play away from home. Remote play depends on network conditions, and Sony cautions that it can use substantially more data than many video-streaming services. Check your mobile-data allowance before using it on cellular.
The available official specifications do not establish a head-to-head latency or image-quality winner. Both approaches rely on remote play and network conditions, so claims that one is categorically faster or clearer are not supported by these specifications.
