For Remote Play, yes: PlayStation Portal needs to connect to a PS5 that is online and either powered on or in Rest Mode. The PS5 runs a compatible game installed on the console and streams it to Portal over Wi-Fi. Portal can also stream some games directly from Sony’s cloud service without an available PS5, but that is a separate feature with different requirements.
How PlayStation Portal Remote Play works
Portal is a remote screen and controller for your PS5, not a standalone console for Remote Play. The game runs on the paired PS5; Portal receives the video and audio stream and sends your inputs back to the console over the network. You can use it on your home Wi-Fi or elsewhere with broadband Wi-Fi.

Sony’s current guidance calls for at least 5 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi for Portal Remote Play and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures do not guarantee smooth play: Wi-Fi signal quality, network congestion and latency also affect the stream.
What you need for Remote Play
- A PlayStation Portal and a PS5; Portal Remote Play does not work with PS4.
- The same PlayStation account signed in on Portal and the PS5.
- A compatible game installed on the PS5, an internet connection for the console and broadband Wi-Fi for Portal.
- The PS5 powered on or in Rest Mode. If you want to wake it remotely from Rest Mode, its network wake settings must be enabled.
How to set up Portal Remote Play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and update its system software.
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- To allow Portal to wake a PS5 in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5, then connect Portal to Wi-Fi and start Remote Play.
Sony’s setup instructions and connection requirements are on its PlayStation Portal Remote Player support page. Menu wording or availability can vary with system software and region.

Can you use PlayStation Portal without your PS5?
Not for Remote Play: the paired PS5 must be available online, powered on or in Rest Mode. However, Cloud Streaming can stream eligible PS5 games directly to Portal while the PS5 is off or being used by another account. That does not remove the PS5 requirement for Remote Play; it is a different way to get a game onto Portal.
| Mode | Where the game runs | Does your PS5 need to be available? | Subscription and eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote Play | A compatible game installed on your paired PS5 | Yes. It must be online and on or in Rest Mode. | PlayStation Plus is not generally required for Remote Play. A game may separately require a membership for online multiplayer. |
| Cloud Streaming | Sony’s cloud service | No. Sony says the PS5 may be off or used by another account. | Requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an eligible game, a supported region and broadband. Cloud Streaming is unavailable to child accounts under Sony’s eligibility information. |
For Portal Cloud Streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Sony says game availability varies by region and over time. Check the current local catalog and terms because the eligible games and supported regions can change. See Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming support information.

Remote Play compatibility and accessories
Portal Remote Play is for PS5, not PS4. Some PS5 games are not compatible, including titles that require PS VR or PS VR2, games needing additional peripherals beyond the controllers Sony supports, and games that must be streamed on PS5 with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Check the game’s requirements if a particular title is the reason you are considering Portal.
Audio accessories are optional. Portal has built-in speakers and supports wired audio through its 3.5 mm audio jack, as well as PlayStation Link wireless devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Sony’s Remote Play compatibility information and Portal audio support page describe supported devices and limitations.

Does Remote Play require PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation Plus is not generally required to use Remote Play itself. A PS Plus membership may still be required by an individual game for online multiplayer. Cloud Streaming on Portal is different: Sony requires PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible game in a supported region. Sony’s Remote Play subscription guidance explains the distinction.
