Neither choice is a proven universal winner: the available official documentation describes features and data handling, not a controlled comparison of answer quality.

What Copilot can do with Edge content
Copilot is integrated into Edge. For personal use, Microsoft’s documented starting flow is to sign in to Edge with a Microsoft account, open a page, video, or PDF, and select the Copilot toolbar icon. You can then ask about the content or request a summary. The initial notice or permission request for using Edge information varies by region.
For some requests, Copilot may use more than the prompt itself. Microsoft says relevant context can include the current webpage, its title, open tabs, browsing history, and recent conversation. That context is what makes page-aware help useful, but it is also a privacy decision: the assistant may need browser information to answer.
Turn off web context when you do not want it used
In Copilot’s settings, switch off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web to prevent that web-context use. You can still use an assistant without asking it to rely on the page, but answers will not have the same page-aware basis. For current setup details, consult Microsoft’s setup and privacy guidance.

Multi-tab and newer Edge capabilities
Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 Edge announcement describes Copilot reasoning across open tabs, along with Voice and Vision, Journeys, Study and Learn, and writing assistance. The announcement covers Edge desktop and mobile in Copilot markets, but individual capabilities can have distinct eligibility and rollout conditions. Treat availability as account- and region-dependent rather than assuming every feature appears for every Edge user.
What ChatGPT brings to Edge
ChatGPT is available as a web service in Edge, so you can use its general assistant and ChatGPT Search without choosing Copilot. Search can return source links, and OpenAI says it may rewrite a prompt into targeted queries for search providers. For local results, it may share approximate IP-derived location; OpenAI says it does not share the IP address itself or account information with providers to run search. Sharing device location is optional. These details apply to ChatGPT Search, not necessarily to every ChatGPT interaction.

OpenAI cautions that ChatGPT Search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open cited pages, check when they were published or updated, and prefer authoritative sources when a claim matters.
Do not assume ChatGPT has Copilot’s page access
The reviewed official documentation does not establish that ChatGPT in Edge can read the current page or all open tabs in the same way Microsoft documents for Copilot. An Edge Add-ons listing surfaced a ChatGPT entry naming OpenAI as publisher and describing sidebar availability, but that listing could not be inspected to confirm its current features or permissions. If you install an extension, check its live listing and permission prompts rather than assuming it can see browser content.

Work and school: account protections and controls
Microsoft documents Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in the Edge sidebar for users signed in to Edge with a Microsoft Entra account. It says enterprise data protection applies to prompts and responses. If page context is used, Edge may send relevant page information based on the prompt and user consent. Edge for Business can also enforce data loss prevention policies. These are organizational controls; use the assistant and account your employer or school authorizes.
One capability has a specific limitation in Microsoft Learn’s documentation: Rewrite is temporarily unavailable in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Microsoft’s general Copilot Chat FAQ covers browser support and enterprise data protection at Microsoft’s Copilot Chat FAQ.

When Copilot can take actions in the browser
Browse with Copilot can click, type, and navigate websites, displaying steps that you can interrupt. This goes beyond asking questions about a page: it lets an assistant act on browser controls. Microsoft labels the feature experimental and cautions that it can misinterpret instructions, make mistakes, or be affected by malicious hidden instructions on a webpage.
Microsoft advises against using Browse with Copilot for banking, stock trading, entering credit card details, government or medical identifiers, or highly confidential information. Its support guidance says US consumers are receiving the feature through Microsoft 365 Premium, with additional markets to follow. Check the current guidance for eligibility and availability before relying on it.
How to choose without treating features as a quality ranking
- Start with the work. For a question about a page, PDF, video, or several open tabs, try Copilot’s Edge context workflow. For general conversation or ChatGPT Search, start with ChatGPT.
- Check the account and policy. For work or school, confirm which account and browser features your organization permits. Entra sign-in and Edge for Business controls are relevant to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
- Decide how much browser context to share. If you use Copilot’s page-aware features, review the web-context setting. For ChatGPT Search, understand that search can involve targeted queries and approximate location for local results.
- Use non-sensitive prompts to compare them. Try a few representative tasks and check whether each answer is supported by sources you can open. Do not infer that one is more accurate or intelligent from feature lists alone.
- Verify consequential claims. Read the underlying sources and check their dates whichever assistant you choose.
No controlled head-to-head benchmark is established by the official sources cited here, so a universal claim that one assistant gives better answers would go beyond the evidence. The practical choice is about workflow, context, account protections, and the amount of browser access you want to grant.
