Not for every basic Copilot interaction. Microsoft’s general guidance says you can access Copilot through Edge without an account. But Microsoft’s Edge-specific setup guide tells users to sign in with a personal Microsoft account to get started. The pages do not explain exactly which versions, regions, or features account-free access covers, so the answer depends on the experience you want to use.
What Microsoft’s guidance says about signing in
Microsoft’s general access guidance lists Edge as a way to use Copilot without a Microsoft account. Its free Copilot comparison also says sign-in is optional.
By contrast, Microsoft’s Edge-specific getting-started guide instructs you to sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account and answers yes when asked whether sign-in is required. Microsoft does not reconcile the difference between that setup guidance and its broader statement that Edge supports account-free access. Don’t assume every Edge feature or configuration will work without signing in.

The exact account-free experience may vary, but Microsoft’s public guidance does not specify how it maps to Edge versions, platforms, or regions. The comparison above describes the scope of Microsoft’s published statements, not a guarantee that each option is available everywhere.

How to start using Copilot from an Edge page
Microsoft’s Edge setup guide describes asking Copilot about a webpage, video, or PDF you have open. For its documented setup, sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account, then:
- Open the webpage, video, or PDF you want to ask about.
- Select the Copilot icon in Edge.
- Ask a question about the content.
Account sign-in and permission to use browsing context are separate choices. Depending on your prompt and settings, Edge may use the current webpage, page title, open tabs, browser history, your query, and recent conversation history. To stop Edge from using web context clues, open Settings > Copilot and AI and turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web, as described in Microsoft’s setup guide.

Is Microsoft 365 Premium required?
No subscription is identified as necessary for standard Copilot chat in Edge. Microsoft ties Microsoft 365 Premium to a separate feature, Browse with Copilot. Its consumer rollout guidance says the feature is for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with additional markets to follow. That rollout does not change the account guidance for ordinary Copilot chat.
