Yes—Microsoft Copilot offers free chat and web-based assistance. A qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription adds Copilot inside desktop Office apps for the plan owner, while Microsoft 365 Premium includes specified advanced AI features and a higher usage allowance. For eligible work or school accounts, Copilot Chat is included at no extra cost; using Copilot with work data and accessing some advanced features may require a separate license.
What do you get with free Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft Support says Copilot is available at no cost at copilot.cloud.microsoft. Free Copilot can help with questions, writing, brainstorming, summaries, web-based answers, and image creation. In Edge, it can also summarize webpages and provide insights about them. Signing in with a personal Microsoft account can enable features such as chat history, longer conversations, and voice interactions. Features and limits vary by availability and account.
Free Copilot is a chat service; it does not mean every Copilot feature in Microsoft 365 apps is free. For the distinction, consider where Copilot works, who is signed in, and what information it can use.
What does an individual Microsoft 365 subscription add?
With an eligible Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium plan, the subscription owner can use Copilot in desktop Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. The available features and AI usage allowances depend on the plan. See Microsoft’s individual plans and features for current terms in your market.

Microsoft 365 Personal and Family
Copilot access in desktop apps is for the subscription owner. A Family plan does not extend those in-app AI benefits to every person sharing the plan. Shared members can access Chat at microsoft365.com with their associated accounts, but should not assume they receive the owner’s desktop-app Copilot access. Microsoft 365 Premium
Premium includes specified advanced AI features and agents, including Tasks, Analyst, and Researcher, along with an extended usage allowance. These are not unlimited benefits: the plan’s current feature rules and limits apply.

Is Copilot in Microsoft 365 unlimited?
No. Paid access does not mean unlimited or identical AI usage across plans. Microsoft says allowances vary by plan and feature, and may also depend on the feature’s entry point and system conditions. Its AI credits and limits guidance, last updated September 2026, notes that limits can change as models become available. Check the current allowance for the feature you intend to use.
What is free for work or school accounts?
Copilot Chat is included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 business licenses. It provides web-grounded chat and can support research, document or webpage summaries, and image creation; agents may also be available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

A separate Microsoft Copilot license adds capabilities such as responses grounded in work data, work-data agents and reasoning agents, advanced features in Microsoft 365 apps, and additional administration and security capabilities. Access depends on the assigned license and the organization’s configuration. Some features, including Teams meeting recaps, may also depend on availability and setup. How can you check which Copilot access you have?
- Confirm the account: Check whether you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account. Access can differ between them.
- For a personal account, check the subscription owner: Review the plan shown in your Microsoft account dashboard. Desktop-app Copilot benefits belong to the eligible plan owner, not automatically to everyone sharing a Family subscription.
- For work or school, check the Microsoft 365 home page: Labels such as Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic), and M365 Copilot (Premium) indicate access levels. There is no universally applicable price to quote for these options: Microsoft’s offers depend on market, billing term, plan, and eligibility. Check the individual pricing page or business pricing page for the terms available to you.
