Keep the file under 5 MB, use GIF, JPEG, or PNG, and make sure it meets the dimensions for the image subtype you use. Microsoft can crop missing variants from the landscape source, so preview the crop before attaching the image to an ad.
These requirements are for Search image extensions—not Audience Network ads, Performance Max asset groups, or Multimedia ads, which have separate specifications.
Recommended size for a Search image extension
Microsoft’s bulk image-extension documentation recommends a 1200 × 628-pixel landscape image for the required LandscapeImageMedia asset. That is the practical starting size for a Search image extension; it is a recommendation, not the minimum for every image subtype. Microsoft’s bulk-service image-extension reference also allows additional aspect-ratio assets.
Other subtype options have their own aspect ratios and minimum pixel dimensions. The very small minimum listed for a generic image is a technical floor, not a sensible target for a production image. Microsoft’s Image object reference lists these subtype requirements:

The same Image reference gives a generic recommendation of at least 703 × 368 px. For the extension’s landscape source, however, use the bulk-service recommendation of 1200 × 628 px and ensure any additional variant meets its own subtype requirements.
File size, formats, and image limits
- Maximum file size: 5 MB, according to the ImageAdExtension API reference (Campaign Management API v13).
- Accepted formats: GIF, JPEG, and PNG, listed as supported MIME types in the Image object reference.
- Animation: Animated images are not supported.
- Maximum dimensions: The Image reference sets a maximum width of 2592 px and a maximum height of 2048 px. Both limits apply independently, and the image must still satisfy its selected subtype’s aspect ratio.
- PNG conversion: Microsoft says PNG images are converted to JPEG. If the conversion produces unsatisfactory quality, the documentation recommends supplying a JPEG instead.
How Microsoft crops missing image variants
If you do not provide a particular subtype asset, Microsoft Advertising can create an asset link by cropping the landscape source. When crop settings are not set, the bulk-service documentation says the service crops the largest possible central area. That can cut off a logo, a person, product details, or text placed near an edge.

Microsoft’s example illustrates the effect: cropping a 1000 × 1000-pixel square source to 1.91:1 produces a 1000 × 524-pixel crop, with a vertical crop offset of 238 px. Treat automated cropping as a convenience, not a guarantee that the composition will remain effective. Keep important content away from the edges and inspect each resulting crop before using it.
When to supply a separate crop
- Use the landscape source alone when its central area remains clear and recognizable at the target ratio.
- Provide a dedicated subtype image when automatic cropping would remove important content or weaken the composition.
- Check that each manually prepared variant meets its subtype’s minimum dimensions and aspect ratio.
Supported layouts and asset reuse
The ImageAdExtension API lists SearchSingle and SearchMultiple as supported values. The same image asset identifier can be used for multiple aspect ratios or multiple ads in the same account, provided the asset and its crop are valid for the intended subtype.

Managing extensions in Microsoft Advertising Editor
Microsoft Advertising Editor can create image extensions, edit existing ones, and manage their associations in bulk. This is useful when applying consistent extension associations across multiple ads. Because interface labels can change, use the current Editor or account interface for the exact screen names and steps.

Audience Network ads
Microsoft’s Audience Network creative-specification PDF, last updated April 18, 2022, recommends a 1200 × 628-pixel (or larger) base image and gives 703 × 368 px as its minimum, alongside additional ratios and sizes for individual placements. It also advises minimizing text in images, reviewing previews, and keeping the creative relevant to the advertised product or service. Those are Audience Network ad specifications, not a complete specification for Search image extensions. See Microsoft Advertising’s creative specifications.

Performance Max
Performance Max asset groups use a different ratio system. In an April 2025 update, Microsoft said it added 2.01:1, 1.69:1, 1.53:1, and 1.24:1 ratios, while removing 1.78:1, 1.33:1, and 1.5:1 from the available Performance Max ratios at that time. That dated update helps explain conflicting search results; it should not be treated as confirmation that the available ratios have not changed since. Read Microsoft’s April 2025 update.
Multimedia ads
Microsoft’s ResponsiveAd API documentation covers Multimedia ads in Search and Audience ads on the Microsoft Audience Network. Those ad types have their own asset requirements. Do not apply their image counts or ratios to the Search image-extension object. See the ResponsiveAd API reference.
