For work or school, Microsoft documents a separate setup using a Microsoft Entra account. That guidance confirms the sign-in requirement for the documented setups, but it does not establish when a newly reported sign-in prompt began or prove that Microsoft recently imposed a universal change.
What Microsoft’s current sign-in guidance says
Microsoft Support’s Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge guide directs personal users to sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account. Its FAQ asks, “Do I need to sign in to use Copilot in Edge?” and answers, “Yes. Sign in to Edge with your personal Microsoft account to get started.”
That is Microsoft’s published setup requirement for personal use. It is not, by itself, evidence of when a sign-in gate first appeared, whether a recent service-wide policy change occurred, or whether every Edge user is affected.

Personal use
For personal Copilot in Edge, Microsoft’s setup guide specifies a personal Microsoft account. The guide describes Copilot as an assistant for questions, research, and summaries of web pages, videos, and PDFs. Depending on the prompt and settings, it may use the query, recent conversation history, or browser context.

Work or school use
Microsoft documents Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in the Edge sidebar as a work-or-school setup: sign in to Edge with a Microsoft Entra account. Microsoft Learn says users signed in with that account receive enterprise data protection. Microsoft’s work guidance says that, in most cases, Copilot signs in automatically with the Entra account after the user signs in to Edge with a work profile. It also notes that data loss prevention (DLP) can prevent Copilot from accessing protected page content.
Browse with Copilot is a separate feature
Do not confuse ordinary Copilot sidebar chat with Browse with Copilot. Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription is required to try Browse with Copilot. Its support guidance says the feature may access tabs and cookies in the current window, but not saved passwords, autofill data, or wallet information.

Stop Copilot from using browser context
If you want Copilot to answer without using the current webpage or other listed browser context, Microsoft’s stated control is to turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web:
- In Edge, open the toolbar’s More menu.
- Select Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this setting prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, or browser history in responses. It controls that context access; it is not described as a way to bypass account sign-in.

Has Microsoft announced a new sign-in lock?
The available official statements establish Microsoft’s current sign-in instructions, not the start date or scope of a newly reported prompt. Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 Edge update announcement discussed feature availability and settings but did not announce a new sign-in rule.
A Reddit post dated August 9, 2026 reports that one user encountered a sign-in request in the Edge sidebar. That is an individual report, not proof of a universal rollout. The sources do not establish which account types, regions, platforms, Edge builds, or rollout groups are affected, nor do they explain Microsoft’s rationale for the reported prompt.
