What the revised setup flow reportedly adds
9to5Google says users could select a category, rename the tag, and configure options such as Left-Behind Reminders when first registering a tag. It gives Bag, Bike, and Car as category examples. Previously, according to the report, these choices were handled in the Find Hub app after setup.
The potential benefit is fewer follow-up steps: users could identify what the tag is attached to and set relevant options as they pair it. The report does not establish that this revised flow has rolled out.

Can I tap a lost Find Hub tag with my phone?
The reported NFC feature is intended to let a phone tap a tag to access its details and settings or identify a lost tag. Whether that works in a specific situation depends on the phone and tag supporting the relevant NFC interaction; the report does not provide model-specific compatibility information.
NFC is distinct from UWB precision finding. Google says UWB-based precision finding requires UWB support on both the tag and the phone, with UWB enabled. Availability and performance vary by tag and phone model, according to Google Account Help. NFC’s reported tap interaction should not be mistaken for UWB’s nearby distance or directional guidance.

Which Find Hub tags support NFC?
That is not established by the available information. Google’s compatible-device directory lists Find Hub-compatible tracker tags from multiple brands, including Chipolo ONE Point, Chipolo CARD Point, Moto Tag, and Pebblebee Clip, Card, and Tag. It does not identify which models support the newly reported NFC capability. Find Hub compatibility alone is not evidence of support for this particular tap feature.
Google also cautions that availability, features, and specifications can vary by region, carrier, and device. Check the exact tag model’s specifications or ask its manufacturer for confirmation of this NFC function; the directory listing by itself cannot answer that question.

How does NFC fit with Find Hub’s lost-tag network?
NFC is a local tap interaction described for viewing tag information or identifying a found tag. It is separate from the network-based process used to locate a tag that is out of Bluetooth range. Google says Find Hub’s offline-finding network uses encrypted recent locations and end-to-end encrypted location information, and provides controls that determine whether a device participates in network finding.
