The announced replacement is to enable Microsoft Authenticator through Google One backup. This is an Android-specific change: Microsoft’s current iPhone instructions still use iCloud, and the notice does not say iOS backups are ending.
What is changing—and what is not
Microsoft’s Authenticator backup instructions state: “Starting January 2027, you will no longer use your Microsoft personal account to enable backup.” The notice appears in the Android section and directs users to enable “Microsoft Authenticator” from Google One backup instead. Microsoft gives no specific start day, and the detailed Authenticator-specific enrollment and recovery steps are not yet established in its notice. Microsoft’s backup instructions should be checked for updates as the date approaches.
This does not mean that all Microsoft Authenticator backups are ending. It also does not announce a change to iPhone backups. The two platforms use different backup routes and their backups cannot be moved between operating-system types.
Android and iPhone backup paths
| Platform | Currently documented backup path | Timing and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Authenticator settings → turn on Cloud Backup → select a personal Microsoft account. | Microsoft says that starting January 2027, Android users will instead enable Microsoft Authenticator from Google One backup. No specific day is stated. |
| iPhone (iOS) | Enable iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain and iCloud Backup; confirm Authenticator is enabled in the iCloud saved-app list. | This remains Microsoft’s currently documented iOS procedure. Its January 2027 note appears in the Android instructions, not the iOS instructions. |
Google’s general Android guidance says device backups are uploaded to a Google Account and some data is protected by the device screen lock. It also says a Google Account has up to 15 GB of no-charge storage, with additional storage available through Google One. That general page does not establish whether the Authenticator-specific backup feature will require a paid plan or explain its exact setup and restore behavior. Google’s Android backup guidance is useful context, not a complete description of Microsoft Authenticator’s integration.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What a restored Authenticator backup brings back
A successful backup does not guarantee that every account is immediately ready to approve sign-ins. What returns depends on the account type and how it uses Authenticator:
- Third-party accounts using one-time passwords: their codes are restored.
- Microsoft personal accounts using only one-time passwords: their codes are restored.
- Microsoft personal accounts using passwordless sign-in: only the account name is backed up; sign in again after restoration.
- Work or school accounts: only the account name is restored; sign in again.
Microsoft’s restore instructions explain that recovery may involve choosing “Restore from backup” or “Begin recovery” and signing in to the recovery account. Some accounts then require additional sign-in or verification. A backup made on iOS cannot be restored to Android, or vice versa; Microsoft requires backup and restore to use the same device type. See Microsoft’s credential restore instructions for the current recovery process.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What to do before changing or resetting your phone
- Inventory the accounts in Authenticator. Note which entries are one-time-password codes, Microsoft personal accounts using passwordless sign-in, and work or school accounts. This tells you which accounts may need a fresh sign-in after recovery.
- Check the current backup instructions for your phone’s operating system. On Android, Microsoft currently documents Cloud Backup tied to a personal Microsoft account; on iPhone, it documents iCloud settings. Do not assume the announced Google One route is already available or that the future process matches general Android device backup.
- Confirm you have another way to sign in or recover each important account. Make sure you can complete any required sign-in or verification if an account returns as a name rather than a usable code.
- Do not remove accounts or clear app data until you have a working recovery path. Microsoft warns that removing an account can leave the device unable to verify sign-ins. Its Android clear-data instructions say all accounts are removed and the action cannot be undone. See Microsoft’s sign-out and removal guidance.
What is still unknown about the 2027 Android change
Microsoft’s notice names Google One backup but does not specify a launch day or publish the complete Authenticator-specific enrollment and recovery workflow. Google’s general Android backup page does not settle which Authenticator accounts or data will be eligible, how the integration will handle recovery, or whether paid storage will be required. Do not infer those details from the general Google backup description; check Microsoft’s platform-specific instructions for updates before relying on the new route.
