“New Microsoft Edge” means Microsoft’s Chromium-based browser, released on January 15, 2020. It replaced the older Windows 10 browser, Microsoft Edge Legacy, which used a different engine and reached end of support in 2021. The current product is simply called Microsoft Edge; “new Edge” is mainly a historical way to distinguish it from Legacy Edge.
What “new Microsoft Edge” means
Microsoft identifies the new Edge as the Chromium-based browser released on January 15, 2020. Chromium is the open-source browser project underlying Edge; it is not another name for Google Chrome. Edge remains Microsoft’s browser, with its own interface, settings, services, and features.
The word “new” refers to the change Microsoft made in 2020, not to a separate browser that users must choose today. When a current feature or update is the subject, the useful details are the Edge version, release channel, and device or operating system.
How it differs from Microsoft Edge Legacy
Microsoft Edge Legacy was the browser launched with Windows 10 in July 2015. It used Microsoft’s EdgeHTML engine and was the default browser on Windows 10 PCs. The Chromium-based Edge uses Chromium instead. Microsoft ended support for Edge Legacy on March 9, 2021.

At the 2020 launch, Microsoft said selected information, including favorites and passwords, could carry over when switching. That was launch-era guidance, not a guarantee for every current migration path.
What Microsoft Edge includes today

These are vendor-described features, not independent findings about performance or protection. Availability and behavior can differ by device, market, and browser version, so a specific feature should be checked against the relevant release and platform.
Why two Edge installations may behave differently
Microsoft offers several release channels for different levels of stability and early access. Stable is intended for broad deployment; Beta is for representative testing; Dev provides earlier capabilities; and Canary is the daily, earliest-build option. Organizations can also use Extended Stable. A channel can affect which features or changes a user sees.

| Extended Stable | Managed environments that need a longer major-version cycle | Eight-week major cycle. |
The two- and eight-week intervals above are Microsoft’s published schedule as of October 2026, not a promise that every device receives an update on a particular day. Microsoft says Stable updates roll out progressively, and scheduled release dates can be approximate. Check the release schedule and Stable release notes for current timing and changes.
