These are nine useful controls—not a universal or official list of nine gestures. Google’s detailed touch instructions cited here are specifically for Maps Go; check the current interface on your phone or car screen, and make touch adjustments only when safely stopped.
Touch controls for the map
The first three controls below are documented for Google Maps Go. Google’s guidance for Maps Go should not be assumed to describe every version of the full Google Maps app or every in-car display.
1. Drag to pan
Drag one finger across the map to look at another area. This moves the map view; it does not, by itself, select a different route. Google documents this gesture for Maps Go. Google Maps Go help.
2. Pinch to zoom
Place two fingers on the map and move them apart to zoom in, or together to zoom out. Google documents this pinch gesture for Maps Go. Google Maps Go help.

| Interaction | What it can do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Touch on phone or screen | Maps Go documents panning, pinch zoom, and touch-and-hold. Android navigation guidance also describes selecting gray alternate routes, opening the navigation card, and using the compass. | Touch details are app- and device-dependent. Verify the current controls for your Maps version and display; handle the screen only when safely stopped. |
| Voice in a supported car | Assistant commands include recentering, showing traffic, satellite view, or a route overview. | Support depends on vehicle, manufacturer, region, language, and data plan. A command listed by Google may not work in every car. |
What changes when Maps is offline?
Download the map area before losing connectivity. Offline driving can guide you only when the entire route stays within the saved area. Offline directions do not include traffic information or alternate routes, and Google says map downloads are unavailable in some regions. Google Maps offline maps help.
Google’s cited guidance does not establish two-finger tilt, map rotation, double-tap zoom, or one-finger double-tap-and-drag as current gestures in the full Maps app, so this guide does not present them as verified controls.
