ChatGPT’s slash commands are desktop-app shortcuts that invoke specific controls or workflows; they are not magic prefixes that guarantee more accurate or detailed answers. OpenAI’s current slash-command reference says to type / in the composer, select a command from the menu, or continue typing to filter it. The available options depend on your environment and access, so your menu may differ. The nine commands below are a practical selection, not the complete official list.
How to open the command menu
- Open the supported ChatGPT desktop app and click the message composer.
- Type
/. - Choose a command from the list, or keep typing to filter the options.
If a command is missing, that usually reflects the app, workspace, account access, or rollout you are using. OpenAI’s reference explicitly notes: “Available options depend on where you use ChatGPT.”
Nine useful slash commands
1. /goal: set a persistent goal
/goal lets you set a goal for ChatGPT to work toward persistently. Use /plan first when you need to shape a multi-step approach, then define the outcome you want the ongoing work to pursue. This is a session-direction control, not a claim that answers will automatically become more correct.
2. /plan: switch on plan mode
/plan toggles plan mode for multi-step planning. It is useful before a project with dependencies, milestones, or several deliverables, because it changes the interaction toward planning rather than immediately producing a final response.

3. /model: choose the model for this chat
/model opens model selection for the current chat. The models shown to you depend on your account and environment. Selecting one changes which model handles that conversation; the reference does not publish a universal accuracy improvement from using a particular model.
4. /reasoning: choose reasoning effort
/reasoning lets you choose the available reasoning-effort setting. Higher or lower effort can affect how the system allocates work, but the command itself is a configuration control, not a guarantee of a better answer for every prompt.
5. /compact: reduce the current context
/compact compacts the current chat’s context. That can help when a long conversation is consuming context or when you want to continue with a leaner working history. Because compaction changes what context is carried forward, check that important requirements remain available before continuing.

6. /review: start a coding review
/review starts code-review mode for uncommitted changes or for comparison against a base branch. It is aimed at coding workflows, not ordinary prose questions. Use it when the relevant project state is available to the app and you want a review of a diff or branch comparison.
7. /init: create an AGENTS.md project scaffold
/init generates an AGENTS.md scaffold for the current project. This is my standout command because it turns a project’s working conventions into an explicit starting point for future coding tasks. It is project-oriented: it does not create a general-purpose answer-improvement mode, and the resulting file should be reviewed and tailored to your repository.
8. /status: inspect chat and account limits
/status displays the chat ID, context usage, and rate limits. It is a diagnostic command: use it to understand the current session’s state or investigate why a long-running workflow may be constrained.

9. /fast: toggle a Fast service tier when offered
/fast turns a catalog-provided Fast service tier on or off when that option is available to you. Whether the control appears, and what service tier it represents, depends on the account and environment. It changes service selection rather than guaranteeing improved factual quality.

Slash commands versus ordinary prompt text
A documented command invokes an app action such as changing a model, entering plan mode, or launching a code workflow. Prefixing an arbitrary instruction with / does not, by itself, create a special answer-quality mode. For better results, state your requirements directly in the prompt and use the command that matches the task you are configuring.
What happened to older search and image shortcuts?
OpenAI’s macOS release notes for November 26, 2024 described slash commands for quickly searching with ChatGPT, initiating reasoning with o1-preview, and generating images with DALL·E: ChatGPT macOS app release notes. That historical, macOS-specific note does not establish the exact current menu or universal availability across today’s interfaces.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ says supported experiences may offer web search through the search icon or the /Search shortcut. Treat “supported experiences” literally and check your own composer; do not assume the shortcut exists in every app, plan, or workspace.

No official source cited here reports a statistic showing that slash commands improve answer accuracy or quality. Their documented benefit is control over the interface, session settings, context, and task-specific workflows.
