The 9 Best Free Offline GPS Apps for Android are Organic Maps for privacy and outdoor use, HERE WeGo for everyday driving, Google Maps for familiarity, OsmAnd for advanced mapping, and MapFactor Navigator for dedicated offline road navigation. Each app requires downloaded map data first; GPS positioning can work without internet, but live traffic and closures cannot.
“Offline GPS” describes several different capabilities. A phone can determine its position from satellite signals without mobile data, but an app still needs locally stored maps to display roads, locally available search data to find places, and routing data to calculate directions. The best choice depends on whether you need driving, hiking, cycling, public transit, privacy, Android Auto, or simply a backup for a road trip.
Key takeaways
- Organic Maps is the strongest genuinely free, privacy-focused choice for offline driving, walking, cycling, hiking, and basic voice navigation.
- HERE WeGo is the best conventional free offline driving option because it supports regional, country, and continental map downloads and offline turn-by-turn navigation.
- Google Maps works offline for driving only when the complete route is inside the downloaded area, and offline driving has no traffic information or alternative routes.
- OsmAnd is the most capable choice for advanced outdoor maps, GPX, terrain, and customization, but its free Google Play edition limits offline-map downloads to a seven-map possibility limit.
- “Free to install” does not necessarily mean free offline navigation: MAPS.ME, Magic Earth, and Sygic require current listing and in-app checks before their free features can be described definitively.
What should you download first?
For one free app before a normal road trip, download HERE WeGo. For a no-subscription app that also handles trails, cycling, hiking, and privacy-sensitive use, choose Organic Maps. Keep Google Maps as a familiar backup if the downloaded route stays within one saved area.
Choose OsmAnd instead when you need GPX files, terrain, elevation, specialized map layers, or detailed outdoor planning. Choose MapFactor Navigator when you want a dedicated offline road-navigation alternative to Google Maps. The remaining apps are useful in narrower situations or need a current check of their free-versus-paid boundaries.

What does “offline GPS” actually mean?
An offline GPS app can continue showing a phone’s position without mobile data because the phone’s GNSS/GPS receiver receives signals from satellites. The app does not supply the satellite positioning. The app supplies the map, place database, route calculation, and voice instructions.
Offline capability is not one feature. Check these separately before relying on an app:
| Capability | What must be available locally | What may disappear without internet |
|---|---|---|
| Offline map viewing | Downloaded map data for the area | New map updates and cloud-synced content |
| Offline location tracking | Working GNSS/GPS hardware and location permission | Fast assisted location acquisition on some devices |
| Offline place search | Downloaded address and point-of-interest data | New businesses, rich business details, and cloud search |
| Offline route calculation | Local road, trail, and routing data | Routes that leave the downloaded area |
| Offline voice navigation | Offline routing plus downloaded voice data, where supported | Online rerouting and current restrictions |
| Live navigation services | Usually a mobile or Wi-Fi connection | Traffic, current closures, transit updates, weather, and many road alerts |
A first location fix can take longer with connectivity disabled. Tall buildings, tunnels, dense forest, canyon walls, indoor locations, battery-saving restrictions, and device-specific permission settings can also reduce positioning accuracy. A working blue location dot does not prove that traffic-aware rerouting or online place search will work.

1. Organic Maps: what makes it the best truly free offline choice?
Organic Maps is the best overall free offline GPS app for readers who value privacy, simple operation, and outdoor coverage. Organic Maps uses OpenStreetMap data and presents itself as free, offline-first, privacy-focused, and without ads or tracking. Its official materials list driving, walking, cycling, hiking, trekking, voice guidance, and Android Auto support. See the Organic Maps feature and download page, the official project repository, and the Android listing.
Organic Maps is especially useful when a trail, footpath, cycle route, or rural place matters as much as a highway. OpenStreetMap can contain paths and local points of interest that are not emphasized in commercial road-navigation databases. Basic use does not depend on a Google account, and the project’s privacy claims make Organic Maps a strong alternative for readers who do not want an ad-supported navigation experience.
The trade-off is data variability. OpenStreetMap coverage and correctness differ by country and locality. Business hours, newly opened businesses, road attributes, and address details may be less complete or less current than Google’s database. Organic Maps also favors a straightforward interface over the extensive customization found in OsmAnd. Download the relevant countries or regions before travel, save important destinations, and test a route in airplane mode.
2. HERE WeGo: is it the best free offline driving app?
HERE WeGo is the best headline recommendation for conventional offline car navigation. HERE says HERE WeGo supports online and offline turn-by-turn navigation and allows regional, country, and continental map downloads. The official HERE WeGo product page documents the broad download approach, while HERE’s offline-map help explains map management, regular updates, and supported Android SD-card use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo prepare HERE WeGo, open the app while online, open its menu or profile area, find Download maps or Offline maps, select the required country, region, or continent, and download it over Wi-Fi. Menu wording can change between Android versions, so use the installed app’s current label rather than relying on an old screenshot.

- Professional Support: Please contact us for any product issues, a satisfying solution is promised forever
HERE WeGo is a better road-trip fit than Google Maps when you want a larger regional or continental download and a navigation app designed around offline use. The downloaded map still cannot know about a new accident, temporary closure, live traffic, weather hazard, or freshly imposed restriction. Restore connectivity whenever possible for current conditions, and update downloaded maps regularly.
3. Google Maps: what works offline and what does not?
Google Maps can provide offline driving navigation, but it is not a complete offline replacement for every navigation mode. Google requires an internet connection and a signed-in Google Maps session before an area can be downloaded. Google’s official Android offline-map instructions give two download paths.
- Open Google Maps, search for a place, tap the place name or address, tap More, tap Download offline map, adjust the area, and tap Download.
- Alternatively, tap the profile picture or initial, tap Offline maps, tap Select your own map, adjust the rectangle, and tap Download.
When offline, Google Maps can provide driving directions only when the complete route is inside the downloaded map. Google’s official help says offline public-transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable. Offline driving also lacks traffic information and alternative routes. Some countries and regions do not support offline downloads because of contractual, language, address-format, or other limitations.
Google Maps can store downloaded maps internally or, on supported Android configurations, on an SD card set up as portable storage. Downloaded maps must be updated before they expire; Google attempts automatic updates when maps are close to expiration and the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Google Maps is therefore best for a familiar local-area backup, not for readers who need offline hiking, GPX, or connection-free traffic intelligence.
4. OsmAnd: is it worth using for advanced offline maps?
OsmAnd is the best choice for advanced offline mapping, hiking, cycling, GPX workflows, terrain, elevation, and customization. OsmAnd supports online and offline navigation and exposes more map layers and specialist controls than a simple driving app. Its official Android purchase documentation distinguishes the free Google Play package from Maps+ and OsmAnd Pro packages.
The important limitation is the free tier. The official documentation identifies a seven-map possibility limit for the free Google Play version, while certain world or special maps do not count toward that limit. Do not describe the free Google Play edition as offering unlimited worldwide offline downloads. Paid packages add capabilities, but exact prices should be taken from the live Android purchase screen because pricing and package details can change.
OsmAnd is powerful rather than immediately simple. It suits a hiker who imports GPX tracks, a cyclist who wants specialized routing, or a traveler who needs detailed layers and terrain information. A casual driver may find HERE WeGo or Organic Maps faster to configure. OsmAnd’s documentation specifically ties Android Auto support to OsmAnd apps obtained from Google Play, so the installation source matters.
5. MapFactor Navigator: where does it fit?
MapFactor Navigator is a practical free offline road-navigation alternative for Android users who want downloadable road maps without depending on Google Maps. MapFactor describes Navigator as a free offline GPS navigation app, and its official documentation says users can download all map data immediately or select only particular map parts. The Android user documentation covers map downloads, while the Navigator 8 material describes its offline-navigation positioning.

- Versatile Car Phone Mount: Cell phone car mount boasts premium suction strength and an upgraded air vent clip, allowing for flexible installation options on windshields, dashboards, and air vents wall mounts. Note!3M Dashboard Pad is NOT REQUIRED when using a phone holder on windshield Pads Mats
- Strong Suction Performance: Car phone holder comes with a double-locked suction cup made of heat-resistant TPU material, guaranteeing it stays firmly attached to your dashboard even in extreme heat. Reactivate its sticky power by washing with water and air-drying Pads Mats.
- Fully Adjustable Design: Featuring a 360-degree rotating ball joint and an adjustable extension arm ranging from 3.7 inches to 5.9 inches, this dash-Mounted phone mount for cars allows you to customize your phone's placement to any desired angle or distance, offering maximum viewing flexibility Pads Mats.
- Universal Fit: Engineered to accommodate all smartphones ranging in size from 4.0 to 7.1 inches and devices up to 14mm thick, including GPS devices, this phone stand for trucks includes a one-touch release mechanism for swift and easy phone mounting. It serves as an excellent accessory for drivers requiring constant phone access, enhancing driving stability and safety Pads Mats.
- Comprehensive Safety Features: The car phone mount for iPhone includes a unique hook design fortified with stainless steel and padded with thick plastic, ensuring secure engagement with air vent blades without causing scratches. The robust silicone rubber provides sturdy protection, even on bumpy roads. Note: Not suitable for circular air vents desk mount Pads Mats.
MapFactor also has official material documenting Android Auto support, including a Navigator Android Auto announcement. Android Auto behavior can still depend on the app version, Android Auto certification, phone, vehicle head unit, region, and installation source.
Use MapFactor when the main requirement is conventional offline road navigation. Check the current edition before installation because map-provider choices, traffic services, specialist content, and premium features can vary. “Free Navigator” should be read as a free core product, not proof that every map or online service is free.
6. MAPS.ME: is it still a good travel app?
MAPS.ME is worth considering for downloaded tourist maps, points of interest, and travel-oriented browsing, but its current free feature boundaries need checking. The official MAPS.ME page advertises offline maps, search, tourist guides, and navigation. The Google Play listing describes offline search, GPS navigation, OpenStreetMap-based maps, and map downloads designed to manage device memory.
Do not repeat older descriptions that assume MAPS.ME is entirely free. Before publication or installation, check the live Android listing and in-app purchase screen for the current number of free map downloads, advertising, voice navigation, route-planning, guide, and premium-map limits. MAPS.ME is a reasonable tourist-POI candidate, but Organic Maps is the safer recommendation when the reader specifically demands a clearly free, ad-free, privacy-focused core experience.
7. Magic Earth: should you choose it?
Magic Earth may suit privacy-conscious drivers, but its current offline package, Android Auto availability, and premium gates must be verified before it is presented as a free offline app. The supplied first-party research did not confirm the current feature boundaries, and secondary claims conflict about whether offline maps or Android Auto features are free or subscription-based.
Check the current Google Play listing and official pricing information in the country where the app will be used. Record the app version, the offline-map entitlement, voice navigation, Android Auto support, and any subscription prompt. Until those checks are complete, label Magic Earth as a potential freemium alternative rather than a confirmed fully free recommendation.
8. CoMaps: what kind of offline app is it?
CoMaps is a promising open-source offline-map candidate for readers who prioritize community map data and privacy, but its current Android distribution and navigation coverage require verification. The supplied research does not establish enough first-party evidence to promise a particular route type, voice-navigation behavior, download limit, or Android Auto integration.
Before recommending CoMaps for a trip, confirm that the current Android build is available through the reader’s preferred distribution channel and test map downloads, offline search, route calculation, voice prompts, and the specific driving, walking, cycling, or hiking mode required. CoMaps should be treated as an emerging alternative, not as a drop-in substitute with the same maturity or feature set as the leading choices.

Note: vent clip is not compatible with round, cross, or diagonal car vents.
9. Sygic GPS Navigation: is the free version enough?
Sygic GPS Navigation is a credible offline-navigation candidate, but it belongs in the freemium category rather than the “completely free” category. Sygic can be relevant to drivers who value premium-style navigation features, but the no-cost installation does not establish that offline maps, voice guidance, lane assistance, speed-camera warnings, traffic, or other premium functions are free.
Check the current Sygic official site and Android purchase screen for the exact plan, map access, subscription or lifetime option, and feature gates available in the reader’s region. Sygic is a sensible paid-upgrade candidate when premium driving features matter; it is a poor first recommendation for someone whose only requirement is free offline navigation.
How should you choose an offline GPS app?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|---|
| One free app for a road trip | HERE WeGo | Broad regional, country, and continental downloads with offline turn-by-turn navigation | Download the complete route and test airplane mode |
| Privacy and no ads or tracking | Organic Maps | Its official materials describe a free, privacy-focused, offline-first app without ads or tracking | Local OpenStreetMap coverage and business details |
| Familiar interface and Google POIs | Google Maps | Convenient for users already invested in Google Maps | Route must stay inside the downloaded area; no offline traffic or non-driving directions |
| Hiking, cycling, GPX, and terrain | OsmAnd or Organic Maps | Both are better suited to outdoor mapping than Google’s offline mode | OsmAnd’s free download limit and the specific trail data |
| Dedicated offline road navigation without Google | MapFactor Navigator | Supports selected map-part downloads and offline road navigation | Current map provider, premium content, and Android Auto setup |
| Tourist POIs and sightseeing | MAPS.ME or Organic Maps | Both use OpenStreetMap-based travel data; MAPS.ME emphasizes guides and POIs | Current MAPS.ME free limits and local POI quality |
| Premium driving features | Sygic | Designed as a paid or freemium navigation option | Current price and which offline features require payment |
How do you test an offline GPS app before a trip?
- Download every required area over Wi-Fi. Include the departure area, destination, border crossings, airport approaches, likely detours, and the return journey. A route can fail when its destination or an intermediate road lies outside the stored map.
- Save critical destinations while online. Bookmark the hotel, trailhead, fuel stops, campsite, hospital, and return address. Offline search databases differ, and a downloaded road map may not find every business or obscure address.
- Check storage. Confirm that all maps finished downloading and that the phone has enough free space. If using an SD card, verify that the app actually recognizes the card and that Android has configured it as supported portable storage.
- Enable airplane mode. Reopen the app after mobile data and Wi-Fi are disabled. Do not test only by turning off one connection while the other remains available.
- Search for the destination offline. Confirm that the destination can be found from the local database or opened from a saved bookmark.
- Calculate a route offline. Check the complete route, including intermediate stops. Test a route that crosses the area you downloaded, not merely a nearby street.
- Test navigation output. Start simulated or real navigation and confirm the location indicator, route line, spoken instructions, and downloaded voice data. Android Auto should be tested in the actual vehicle when it is important.
- Restore connectivity and update maps. Update immediately before travel, then repeat the offline test if the app changed its map data or settings.
What happens when an offline route leaves the downloaded area?
An offline app may stop calculating, lose detailed map display, or stop providing turn-by-turn guidance when the route leaves the stored map or routing dataset. Download a larger area than the minimum visible route and include border crossings, detours, airport roads, and the return route. Do not assume that a map tile visible on screen contains all routing data needed beyond its boundary.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why can an offline app show my location but fail to navigate?
A phone’s GNSS receiver can establish a position independently of the internet, while navigation still fails because the app lacks local road, trail, address, voice, or routing data. Check that the map download completed, the destination is inside the downloaded area, location permission is enabled, and battery optimization is not suspending the app.
If the phone shows no position, move outdoors with a clear view of the sky and wait for a fix. Tunnels, buildings, forests, canyon walls, indoor locations, airplane-mode behavior on a particular handset, and manufacturer power controls can all affect the result. Carry a charger or power bank because offline navigation still uses the screen, processor, and location hardware.
Can offline apps replace live traffic and road information?
No. Offline apps can provide a precomputed route, but they cannot genuinely provide current traffic without a connection. Accidents, temporary closures, weather hazards, newly imposed restrictions, and changing speed or road conditions may be absent. Use downloaded maps for resilience, restore mobile data whenever possible, and carry a saved itinerary or paper backup for remote travel.
How often should offline maps be updated?
Update maps over Wi-Fi immediately before an important trip and whenever the app indicates that a download is outdated. Google says downloaded maps must be updated before expiration and that Google Maps attempts automatic updates when maps are close to expiring while connected to Wi-Fi. HERE WeGo also advises regularly updating downloaded maps. See Google’s offline-map requirements and HERE’s offline-map guidance.

Some do, but Android Auto support is app-, version-, installation-, region-, phone-, and vehicle-dependent. Organic Maps and MapFactor have official support signals, while OsmAnd’s documentation specifically describes Android Auto support for apps obtained from Google Play. Verify the current app listing and connect the phone to the actual head unit before relying on Android Auto for a trip.

Can offline maps be stored on an SD card?
Some Android configurations and apps support SD-card storage, but support is not universal. Google documents internal storage and supported portable SD-card storage for downloaded maps, and HERE’s help also discusses Android SD-card use. Confirm the card is configured correctly, the app shows the downloaded maps after restarting, and the card remains in the phone during navigation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GPS work without internet on Android?
Yes. An Android phone can usually determine its location from satellite signals with mobile data and Wi-Fi disabled, although the first fix may take longer and accuracy depends on the device, permissions, battery settings, and visibility of the sky. Offline navigation still requires locally downloaded maps and routing data.
Which offline GPS app is completely free?
Organic Maps is the clearest fully free core recommendation in this comparison: its official materials describe free offline maps and navigation without ads or tracking. HERE WeGo and MapFactor also offer free core offline navigation, while OsmAnd has free limits and MAPS.ME, Magic Earth, and Sygic require current checks because premium boundaries can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Google Maps navigate without internet?
Google Maps can navigate offline for driving when the entire route is inside a downloaded map. Google’s official help says offline public-transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable, and offline driving has no traffic information or alternative routes.
Which offline app is best for hiking or GPX files?
OsmAnd is the strongest advanced choice for hiking, cycling, GPX, terrain, elevation, and map customization, while Organic Maps is simpler and has strong general outdoor use. Check trail coverage for the exact area and remember that OsmAnd’s free Google Play edition has a seven-map possibility limit.
Do offline GPS apps show live traffic?
No. Live traffic requires a data connection. Offline apps can calculate routes from stored map data, but they cannot reliably know about current accidents, closures, weather hazards, or newly imposed restrictions without connectivity.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose HERE WeGo for straightforward free offline driving, Organic Maps for privacy and outdoor use, Google Maps for a familiar downloaded-area backup, OsmAnd for advanced mapping and GPX, and MapFactor Navigator for dedicated offline road navigation. Download the complete route, switch to airplane mode, search and calculate a route, test voice guidance, and update the maps before departure.
