No single game here recreates all of those strengths. This guide matches eight options to the parts of The Witcher 3 you may value most, and flags the biggest difference for each.
CD PROJEKT RED presents The Witcher 3 as an open-world RPG built around its story, setting, and choices. Its publisher says the game offers over 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay; that is a publisher-provided figure, not a guaranteed playtime for every player. The Complete Edition includes the base game and the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine story expansions, which Bandai Namco says add 50 hours of gameplay: Bandai Namco’s Complete Edition page.
Which game is most like The Witcher 3?
There is no universal closest match: the answer changes with the feature you want. Skyrim is the clearest choice for wandering through a fantasy world; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a strong fit for character-focused storytelling in a detailed open world; and Cyberpunk 2077 shares an open-world RPG approach from the same studio, but trades fantasy for science fiction. For mature fantasy and consequential dialogue, consider Dragon Age: Origins.
The eight games below are organized by fit, not ranked as an objective best-to-worst list. The comparison focuses on setting and tone, narrative, exploration, choices, and RPG or combat format. Similarity on one axis does not mean a game matches The Witcher 3 on all the others.

Games like The Witcher 3, matched to what you want
1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — best for fantasy exploration
Choose it if: you most want the freedom to roam, find secrets, and encounter magic and monsters in a large fantasy world.
How it differs: Skyrim is a natural recommendation for its world and exploration, but that does not make its quest structure or combat a close copy of The Witcher 3. GamesRadar highlights its magical setting, freedom to roam, secrets, monsters, and alchemy in its guide to games like The Witcher 3.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2 — best for character-led open-world storytelling
Choose it if: the memorable characters, emotional story, and sense of life in The Witcher 3 matter more to you than a fantasy setting.
How it differs: this is a historical Western rather than a fantasy RPG. Its appeal here is its character-centered narrative and detailed open world, not magic or monster hunting. GamesRadar points to its emotionally driven story, memorable characters, open-world detail, and branching, novel-like narrative in its recommendation guide.

3. Dragon Age: Origins — best for mature fantasy and consequential dialogue
Choose it if: you want a diverse cast, mature fantasy storytelling, and dialogue decisions that can have major effects.
How it differs: it is a party-based RPG, not an open-world imitation of The Witcher 3. Its fit is in the fantasy setting, character ensemble, and consequential choices. GamesRadar describes its cast and world-altering dialogue choices in its list of similar games.
Rank #2
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
4. Cyberpunk 2077 — best for another open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED
Choose it if: you want a story-driven open-world RPG from the studio behind The Witcher 3, and are happy to leave medieval fantasy behind.
How it differs: it is set in a futuristic city and centers on V, making it a science-fiction change of setting rather than a return to the Continent. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as an open-world role-playing game on its official Cyberpunk 2077 site.

Choose it if: you want to stay with Geralt and the political, monster-haunted fantasy world of the series.
How it differs: it is a predecessor rather than another sprawling open-world adventure on the scale of The Witcher 3. The fit is the same series and protagonist; do not expect the later game’s world structure.
6. Mass Effect Legendary Edition — best for an authored science-fiction saga and companion arcs
Choose it if: you want a sweeping story, a recurring crew, and decisions across a role-playing adventure, but are open to science fiction.
How it differs: its setting and combat are science-fiction, and its structure is a trilogy collection rather than one open-world fantasy. It is an adjacent choice for players who prioritize story and characters over setting.

7. Kingdom Come: Deliverance — best for grounded medieval immersion
Choose it if: you want to explore a medieval world and prefer a grounded tone to magic and supernatural monsters.
How it differs: it replaces The Witcher 3’s fantasy with historical realism. That makes it a setting-and-exploration alternative, not a substitute for Geralt’s supernatural hunts.
8. Horizon Zero Dawn — best for a story-led world of discovery
Choose it if: you want to explore a distinctive open world, follow a central protagonist, and uncover the story behind a strange setting.
How it differs: its world is science fiction, not medieval fantasy, and its identity is shaped by machine-hunting rather than monster contracts or political intrigue.

- Freedom to explore a fantasy world: start with Skyrim.
- Emotional storytelling and a detailed open world: try Red Dead Redemption 2 if a non-fantasy setting works for you.

- Open-world role-playing with a science-fiction setting: consider Cyberpunk 2077.

These matches are about different player priorities, not a claim that any one game reproduces the full combination of story, setting, choices, exploration, and combat found in The Witcher 3.
