You can replace several entertainment subscriptions with a mix of seven free services, provided you accept the trade-offs. Internet Archive is the strongest fit for retro games and historical media; MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA covers current manga; Tubi and Pluto TV stream ad-supported movies, television and anime; Hoopla lends digital comics through participating libraries; Comic Book Plus focuses on public-domain classics; and WEBTOON delivers contemporary webcomics.
“Free” does not mean identical to a paid catalog. Commercial breaks, library-card eligibility, title-level chapter rules, public-domain limits and regional licensing all affect what you can actually watch or read. Use the service-specific checks below before cancelling a subscription.
Quick comparison: which free service replaces which subscription?
| Service | Best replacement for | Access model | Main limitation to expect | Good first check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internet Archive | Retro games, old magazines, films, music and television recordings | Open online archive with item-by-item access | Rights and availability differ by item | Search for the exact game, issue or recording and read its access notice |
| MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA | Current manga chapters | Official online manga service with title-specific free access | Free chapters and “First Read Free” eligibility vary by series | Open the title page and inspect the current chapter rules |
| Tubi | Free movies, television and anime | Legitimate, ad-supported streaming | Commercial breaks, changing catalog and regional differences | Search the film or series while signed in from your location |
| Pluto TV | Free television channels and anime viewing | Ad-supported streaming and channel-style viewing | Line-up and on-demand availability can change by region | Check the current anime section and schedule in your market |
| Hoopla | Digital comics, graphic novels and manga | Library-card lending through a participating library | Your library controls eligibility and lending rules | Confirm that your library participates before creating an account |
| Comic Book Plus | Golden and Silver Age comics | Free online public-domain archive | Selection is historical rather than a source for current releases | Browse by character, publisher or genre to verify a series is present |
| WEBTOON | Contemporary webcomics and digital graphic stories | Free digital-comic platform with title- and licence-dependent access | Genres, series and branded collections can change | Check the series page for free-episode and release information |
Catalogs, chapter policies, advertising loads and library participation are not fixed. A title listed in one country, on one date or under one access rule may not appear the same way elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose by the hobby you want to keep
- Retro gaming and media history: Start with Internet Archive, especially if you want to explore software, scanned magazines, commercials or old television alongside games.
- New manga: Try MANGA Plus first. It is the relevant option when the question is whether a current Shueisha series has free chapters, not whether an old volume is archived.
- Films with a tolerance for adverts: Tubi provides an on-demand starting point for movies, television and anime without a subscription fee.
- Anime in a television-style experience: Pluto TV is useful when you are happy to browse a changing line-up and watch through commercial breaks.
- Comics through an existing library membership: Hoopla can be the best value, but only if your local library participates and still has lending availability.
- Classic superheroes and genre comics: Comic Book Plus is aimed at public-domain Golden and Silver Age material rather than modern issues.
- Ongoing webcomics: WEBTOON is the natural fit for mobile-first or browser-based contemporary series, including selected licensed properties.
Internet Archive: a deep shelf for retro games and old media
What you can find
Internet Archive is broader than a game site. Its collection includes digitized software, classic games, movies, music, books, magazines, soundtracks, commercials and television recordings. That combination makes it useful for recreating the experience around an old game: you can look for the software itself, then read period coverage or inspect related advertising and soundtracks.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The recommendation is particularly strong for arcade-era browsing and magazine research. Classic arcade titles and scanned issues of GamePro are examples of the sort of material a visitor may encounter.
How to use it without assuming every item is playable
- Search for the exact title, platform, magazine issue or recording.
- Open the individual item page rather than relying on a search-result summary.
- Read the item’s access and rights information before downloading, streaming or launching anything.
- Use the available browser viewer or other stated access method when the item provides one.
- If an item is unavailable, try a different edition or related scan instead of assuming the entire work has been removed.
Availability and rights vary by item. The archive should therefore be treated as a catalogue of specific deposits, not a promise that every historically released game or recording is unrestricted. A result can exist for preservation or reference while still having limits on how it may be accessed.
MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA: the best first stop for current manga
Why it differs from a back-catalogue archive
MANGA Plus is identified as Shueisha’s official service, so it addresses a different need from Internet Archive or Comic Book Plus: following selected current manga through an authorised publisher service. Its free offer is decided series by series.
Recommended Free Tools
Understanding the free-chapter rules
Some titles make their first and newest chapters available at no charge. Eligible ongoing series may also use a “First Read Free” system, in which a chapter can be read free on its first opening under the service’s rules. Those conditions are not universal, and they can change.
- Open the page for the exact series you want.
- Read the chapter labels and any “First Read Free” notice shown there.
- Check whether the chapters you need are first chapters, newest chapters or part of an eligible ongoing run.
- Record which chapters are free before planning a full catch-up read; older middle chapters may not follow the same rule.
This makes MANGA Plus excellent for sampling a new series or keeping up with selected releases, but less dependable as a free substitute for a complete digital back catalogue. The title page is the authority for the current offer, not a general assumption about every Shueisha series.
Tubi: on-demand movies, television and anime with adverts
What the service replaces
Tubi is a legitimate ad-supported service for free movies, television and anime. It is the closest match in this list for someone replacing a paid general-purpose streaming subscription and who is willing to trade a subscription bill for commercial breaks.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Examples and viewing expectations
The catalogue cited for this recommendation includes Labyrinth, The Last Unicorn, Tank Girl and Masters of the Universe. Those examples show the value of checking for cult and library-style films rather than assuming a free service only carries unknown productions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ad breaks are part of the access model. They can interrupt a film or episode, so Tubi is not equivalent to an advert-free paid tier. The catalogue and geographic rights can change, which means a title found by one viewer may not be available in another market or on a later visit.
A reliable way to check a movie before cancelling
- Search Tubi for the exact film, season or anime series.
- Confirm that the result is playable in your location, rather than relying on a poster or search snippet.
- Note whether the listing is a complete film, a particular season or only selected episodes.
- Start playback far enough to verify that the stream works and that the expected language or version is offered.
- Plan for commercial breaks when deciding whether it can replace a paid service for a specific viewing night.
Pluto TV: channel-style free anime and television
Where it fits
Pluto TV is another legitimate, ad-supported option, but its strength in the recommendation is free anime and television presented through a channel-oriented service. It can suit viewers who prefer opening a service and browsing what is on rather than maintaining a paid queue.
Anime examples and catalogue limits
The anime archive described with this recommendation includes Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sonic X, Sailor Moon and Monster Rancher. Availability is not a permanent catalogue guarantee: Pluto TV’s channels, on-demand library and regional rights can change.
How to avoid confusing a channel listing with on-demand access
- Look in the current anime area for the show you want.
- Determine whether the title is available as a scheduled channel, an on-demand selection or both.
- Check the local schedule if you need a particular episode or a specific start time.
- Expect advertising in either viewing mode and allow for a changing line-up.
Pluto TV works best as a complement to Tubi rather than a guaranteed one-for-one replacement. Use Tubi when you know the exact film or series; use Pluto TV when channel discovery and a free anime line-up are more important than controlling the schedule.
Hoopla: library-card access to digital comics and manga
The requirement that determines everything
Hoopla depends on a participating local library. You need a valid library card and must enter the information requested by the service. If your library does not participate, or if your card is not eligible, Hoopla cannot serve as a free comic subscription regardless of what another reader can borrow.
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What you can borrow
When access is available, Hoopla can provide digital comics, graphic novels and manga as library loans. It is useful for readers who want complete graphic novels rather than only a few promotional chapters and who already have a library relationship.
Set-up and borrowing checks
- Confirm participation with your local library.
- Create or open a Hoopla account and choose the correct library when prompted.
- Enter the required library-card details.
- Search for the exact comic, graphic novel or manga volume.
- Read the loan terms and any availability message before borrowing.
- Keep track of the library’s lending rules, including any limits or renewal conditions it applies.
The library, not a universal Hoopla policy, determines important parts of the experience. Another reader may have a different monthly allowance or catalogue because their library has negotiated different access. Treat the service as a digital extension of your library card, not as an unrestricted comic store.
Comic Book Plus: public-domain Golden and Silver Age comics
Why its catalogue is distinctive
Comic Book Plus is described as a free legal archive of public-domain classic comics. Its emphasis is historical: Golden and Silver Age material, early superhero runs, science-fiction serials and classic horror anthologies.
Examples associated with the recommendation include Blue Beetle, Captain Marvel and Moon Girl. The appeal is discovery of early characters, genres and storytelling formats, not access to the latest monthly issues.
A good browsing method
- Choose a character, genre or era rather than searching only for a modern publisher name.
- Open the issue record and confirm that the displayed scan is the story you expect.
- Use the reader to inspect complete issues and surrounding series information.
- Save the issue or series details if you are researching publication history, since classic titles can have similar names.
Public-domain status is the reason this archive can offer the material without a subscription. It should not be read as evidence that every comic featuring a familiar character is free or that current rights holders’ editions are included.
WEBTOON: contemporary webcomics and licensed digital stories
What makes it different from classic-comic archives
WEBTOON offers broad access to contemporary digital comics, making it the strongest choice here for readers who want ongoing webcomic formats rather than scanned historical issues. The service’s catalogue can include independent series as well as licensed or branded collections.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The recommendation highlights Disney-related offerings, Marvel runs and graphic novels connected with Alien and Predator. These examples illustrate the range, but licensing agreements and available genres can change.
How to evaluate a series before committing time
- Open the series page and review the episodes currently marked free.
- Check the release information if you want to follow an ongoing story.
- Distinguish a complete free run from a series that unlocks only selected episodes at no charge.
- Look for the publisher or licence information on branded titles, since rights can differ between countries.
WEBTOON is a practical replacement for a paid digital-comics subscription when your priority is discovering current web-native stories. It is not a substitute for every print-comic publisher or for a library’s complete graphic-novel catalogue.
How to build a free entertainment mix without unpleasant surprises
1. Separate the title you want from the format you want
Write down the exact film, series, manga chapter, comic issue or game. Then decide whether you need on-demand playback, a scheduled channel, a complete volume, a single chapter or historical context. Tubi and Pluto TV can both cover video, but they do not offer the same viewing model; MANGA Plus and WEBTOON both cover comics, but one is publisher-led manga while the other is a contemporary webcomic platform.
2. Verify the access condition before cancelling anything
- For Tubi and Pluto TV, confirm that the stream is available in your region and accept that adverts are part of the deal.
- For Hoopla, confirm library participation and card eligibility first.
- For MANGA Plus, inspect the exact series page for first, newest or “First Read Free” chapter rules.
- For Internet Archive and Comic Book Plus, read the item or issue information rather than assuming that a search result grants unrestricted rights.
- For WEBTOON, check which episodes and licensed collections are currently free in your location.
3. Keep two services when their strengths are complementary
A practical combination might be Tubi for a known movie, Pluto TV for casual anime viewing, MANGA Plus for current chapters and Comic Book Plus for historical reading. No single service in this list is intended to replace every paid subscription category.
4. Recheck volatile catalogues
Streaming rights, manga chapter policies, library participation, advertising arrangements and webcomic licences can all change. Recheck the service immediately before a planned viewing or reading session, especially if the title is the reason you are considering cancelling a subscription.

The title appears in search but will not play or open
First check the item or title page for a regional or rights notice. On streaming services, a poster can remain visible after playback rights change. On archives, an entry can exist while access is limited. Try the service’s current search from your own location and look for an alternative edition only when the service presents one.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

A manga chapter is not free even though another chapter is
That is consistent with MANGA Plus’s title-specific rules. Check whether the free chapter is the first, newest or eligible for “First Read Free.” Do not assume that free access to one chapter unlocks the whole series.
Hoopla rejects the library details
Verify that the selected library is your actual participating library and that the card is current. If participation or eligibility is the problem, Hoopla cannot be fixed through a different title search; contact the library for the correct access route.
Commercial breaks make a free stream impractical
Tubi and Pluto TV are explicitly ad-supported. If uninterrupted playback is essential, a free stream may not meet that requirement even when the title is available. You can still use the services for casual viewing while reserving a paid or library option for a specific uninterrupted event.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The catalogue differs from a friend’s
Geography, rights agreements, library policies and catalogue updates explain many differences. Compare the service from the same country and date before concluding that a title has disappeared universally.
What “free” means across these seven options
These services use several different definitions of free:
- Ad-supported access: Tubi and Pluto TV remove the subscription charge but fund viewing through commercial breaks.
- Library-funded lending: Hoopla requires a participating library and a valid card; the library’s rules govern borrowing.
- Public-domain access: Comic Book Plus concentrates on material whose rights status permits its free archive model.
- Title-limited promotional access: MANGA Plus makes particular chapters free under rules that differ by series.
- Open archive access with item-level rights: Internet Archive contains a wide range of digitised material, but each item can have different availability and rights information.
- Platform and licence-dependent access: WEBTOON offers free digital-comic reading, while its current series and branded collections depend on catalogue and licensing decisions.
Understanding the access model is more useful than counting how many titles a service advertises. It tells you whether the real trade-off is adverts, eligibility, chapter selection, historical scope or regional availability.
Bottom line: use a portfolio, not a single replacement
The most reliable way to cut entertainment subscription costs is to pair services with the hobby they actually serve. Start with Internet Archive for retro games and media history, MANGA Plus for current Shueisha manga, Tubi for on-demand films, Pluto TV for free anime and channel browsing, Hoopla when your library participates, Comic Book Plus for public-domain classics and WEBTOON for contemporary webcomics. Check the exact title, access rule and region each time; these seven options are useful precisely because they trade a universal paid catalogue for narrower, clearly defined kinds of free access.
