Treat these seven ideas as a flexible menu—not a beauty formula or a routine you must complete every night. Choose one or two that suit your schedule and keep them if they help.
What a useful bedtime routine looks like
A bedtime routine is a set of activities you repeat before sleep. Sleep Foundation describes a typical adult routine as lasting 30 to 60 minutes, but the activities and timing can be tailored to the individual. Its advice, attributed to sleep medicine physician David Rosen, MD, is to begin with one or two changes and allow for slip-ups rather than treating the routine as all-or-nothing. (Sleep Foundation)
The seven ideas below are an editorial selection of practical sleep-hygiene habits, not a ranked list or a tested seven-step protocol. Pick the habits that feel calming, fit your life, and are sustainable without buying anything.
7 bedtime habits to try
1. Keep your sleep and wake times fairly consistent
Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same times helps give your schedule a predictable rhythm. Aim for consistency on weekends when practical, while allowing for the occasional late night or early start. The goal is a schedule you can maintain, not a perfect clock-time routine.

2. Put screens aside as you begin winding down
Make the beginning of your wind-down a natural point to put away phones, tablets, and other electronics. This can make room for a quieter activity instead of keeping you engaged with a screen. There is no single cutoff time in the cited guidance that applies to everyone; choose a screen-free window you can stick with.
3. Choose one quiet activity that genuinely relaxes you
Try reading, calming music, meditation, slow breathing, or gentle stretching. You do not need to stack several activities together. Keep the one that helps you settle, and swap it for another if it feels like a chore. These are options in Sleep Foundation’s adult routine guidance, not treatments that work for everyone. 4. Consider a warm bath well before bed
If a bath feels relaxing, try taking one at least an hour before sleep. Sleep Foundation explains that the body’s cooling after a warm bath may support the transition toward sleep. This is an optional routine idea, not a requirement or a guaranteed result. (Sleep Foundation)
5. Keep late food and drink comfortable and moderate
A heavy meal or alcohol close to bedtime may disrupt sleep, but going to bed hungry can also make it harder to settle. If you are hungry, a light snack may be more comfortable than a large meal. Avoid turning a particular food or drink into a supposed sleep treatment; the useful question is whether your evening choices leave you comfortable enough to rest. (Sleep Foundation)

6. Write down tomorrow’s tasks or journal briefly
A short list of things to handle tomorrow, or a few lines of journaling, can help you put thoughts in order before bed. A notebook or ordinary paper is enough; a dedicated journal is optional. The cited guidance mentions this as a routine idea, but does not establish a specific measurable benefit or show that it treats insomnia. (Sleep Foundation)
7. Make the bedroom comfortable for sleep
Focus on the conditions you can control: a room that is cool, dark, and quiet, along with a comfortable sleep setup. Sleep Foundation’s healthy-sleep guidance recommends those environmental conditions; it does not mean you need to buy new bedding or gadgets to begin. Adjust what you already have where possible. How to choose a routine you will keep
Try one or two changes first, then judge them by whether they calm you, fit your schedule, and reduce disruptions you notice. Keep the parts that feel sustainable and drop the ones that add stress. A routine can be short and still be useful; it does not need all seven habits every night.
Sleep Foundation says adults should budget seven or more hours for sleep. That is general healthy-sleep guidance, not a personalized prescription; your needs and circumstances may differ. (Sleep Foundation)

When bedtime habits are not enough
Sleep hygiene can support healthier routines, but Sleep Foundation cautions that it will not cure sleep problems on its own. If sleep difficulty persists, seek appropriate advice from a health professional rather than relying on a new bedtime ritual alone. (Sleep Foundation)
