Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a broad first check, use ipleak.net. It brings public IP, IPv6, WebRTC, DNS and optional torrent detection together. For a deeper DNS check, add DNSLeakTest’s Extended test and BrowserLeaks DNS, which deliberately tests both IPv4-only and IPv6-only lookups. No single checker covers every diagnostic equally well, and the available information does not establish that one is universally more accurate than the others.
Which VPN leak test tool should you use?
Choose based on the exposure you want to check. A broad dashboard is convenient; a focused test can show details a summary may omit.
| Tool | Best use | What it checks or reports | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| ipleak.net | Broad first pass | Public IPv4 and IPv6 reachability, DNS addresses, WebRTC exposure and optional torrent-address detection | Combines several common leak checks on one page. |
| DNSLeakTest.com | Finding more DNS resolvers | DNS resolver discovery | Standard runs 6 queries; Extended runs 36 queries over 6 rounds, according to the site’s 2026 page capture. The site says Extended can take 10–30 seconds longer. |
| BrowserLeaks DNS | Comparing DNS behavior across address families | Resolver behavior for IPv4-only and IPv6-only names | BrowserLeaks’ 2026 page capture specifies 50 random domains: 25 IPv4-only and 25 IPv6-only. |
| BrowserLeaks WebRTC | Inspecting browser-visible WebRTC details | WebRTC support, local and public candidates, remote IPv4/IPv6, SDP information and media-device signals | Documents mitigation settings for Firefox and Chrome. |
| dnscheck.tools | Specialist DNS checks | DNS leak testing and DNSSEC validation | Offers controlled query options and IPv4-only or IPv6-only authoritative nameservers. Its help documentation says responses are signed using ECDSA P-256 with SHA-256 by default. |
| dnsleak.dev | Investigating intermittent DNS results | Resolver identity, repeated lookups, IPv6 reachability to the service, DNSSEC awareness and WebRTC-visible versus connection addresses | Repeated lookups can reveal results that a single run may not show. |
| VPNLeakCheck | Combined leak and reputation checks | IP, DNS, WebRTC, torrent and IPv6 checks, plus blacklist and geolocation-provider checks | Its 2026 page capture says it checks an IP against 7 geolocation providers and 12 blacklists. |
The query counts and provider totals above describe what each service says it does; they are not a controlled comparison of detection accuracy or speed.
How do you know if your VPN is leaking DNS, IPv6 or WebRTC?
A VPN-connected IP that matches the expected exit server is not enough to establish that all traffic is protected. DNS lookups, IPv6 traffic or browser WebRTC connections can expose information separately from the public IP shown for an ordinary connection.

DNS leaks
ipleak.net defines a DNS leak as an unencrypted DNS query sent by the system outside the established VPN tunnel. Run a DNS test while connected, then inspect the resolver addresses it reports. If a resolver appears to belong to your home ISP, investigate whether DNS requests are bypassing the VPN; the provider name alone is a clue to check, not a complete account of how your VPN routes DNS.
IPv6 exposure
An IPv6 leak is a concern when a checker can reach the internet over IPv6 using an address that is not protected by the VPN. A test that reports IPv4 only cannot answer that question on its own. Use BrowserLeaks DNS to exercise IPv6-only names, and check IPv6 reachability in ipleak.net or another checker with explicit IPv6 reporting.

WebRTC exposure
WebRTC is browser networking that can reveal local or public address candidates. ipleak.net explains that STUN can discover a public IP; BrowserLeaks WebRTC provides a more detailed view of candidates and related session information. Compare the public address information with the VPN connection, rather than assuming the VPN’s ordinary IP result covers browser traffic too.
Is ipleak.net better than DNSLeakTest.com?
They answer different questions. ipleak.net is more useful when you want a single broad view of IP, IPv6, DNS and WebRTC, with optional torrent detection. DNSLeakTest.com focuses on resolver discovery: its Standard mode performs one round of 6 queries, while Extended mode performs 6 rounds of 6 queries, for 36 queries total. DNSLeakTest says Extended is intended to discover all DNS servers and can take 10–30 seconds longer than Standard.

Use the extended run when a resolver may be missed by a shorter sample. Use ipleak.net when you want to check multiple exposure types together. Neither description establishes a universal accuracy winner.
How should you run a useful VPN leak test?
- Connect the VPN. Note the expected exit country and server address so you have a reference for interpreting the results.
- Open ipleak.net. Check the public IP, IPv6 reachability, DNS list and WebRTC results. Use its torrent check only if you specifically want to examine the address associated with torrent traffic.
- Run DNSLeakTest.com in Extended mode. Review the resolver list after its 36-query test, rather than treating the six-query Standard test as the only result.
- Run BrowserLeaks DNS. Its IPv4-only and IPv6-only names help show whether resolver behavior differs between the two address families.
- Open BrowserLeaks WebRTC. Compare the addresses shown in local and public candidates with the VPN connection’s expected address.
- Investigate inconsistent results. Use dnsleak.dev for repeated resolver lookups; use dnscheck.tools when you need DNSSEC validation or controlled IPv4-only/IPv6-only authoritative-name-server testing.
- Repeat after relevant changes. Test again after changing VPN servers, browsers, network interfaces or VPN software versions.
Why might your ISP appear in a DNS leak test?
A DNS checker reports resolver addresses that answered its queries. If an address is associated with your home ISP while the VPN is connected, that is a reason to investigate whether DNS requests are leaving the tunnel. Check the result across more than one run or tool, including an extended or repeated test, and compare the reported resolvers with the VPN’s expected DNS behavior. A checker’s result identifies what it observed; it does not by itself explain the VPN’s routing configuration.

What should you do if a test shows a leak?
- Confirm the VPN is connected to the intended server, then rerun the relevant focused test and the broad ipleak.net check.
- If DNS results are the concern, compare DNSLeakTest Extended with BrowserLeaks DNS; use dnsleak.dev if the result appears intermittent.
- If IPv6 results are the concern, verify IPv6 explicitly rather than relying on an IPv4 result. Check the VPN’s documented IPv6 leak protection or IPv6-handling settings.
- If WebRTC shows unexpected candidates, consult BrowserLeaks WebRTC’s Firefox or Chrome mitigation guidance and review the browser’s available settings.
- If the unexpected result persists, use the VPN provider’s support documentation for the specific operating system, browser and network configuration.
A clean result describes the tested setup at that time, not a permanent guarantee. VPN, browser, operating-system or network changes can affect later results.
