Windows 11 on Arm can run 64-bit x86 apps through emulation today. The headline “coming” announcement referred to a Prism update that broadened compatibility with x64 apps requiring CPU features such as AVX and AVX2—not the arrival of x64 emulation itself. Windows 10 on Arm does not support x64 app emulation.
What changed in the Prism update
On November 6, 2024, Microsoft announced a major Prism update in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27744 for the Canary Channel. It added support under emulation for AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, F16C and other x86 CPU extensions, allowing more x64 apps that expect those features to run. Microsoft said Adobe Premiere Pro 25 was already using the support in retail Windows 11 24H2; the Canary preview made it available to any x64 app.
The update expanded which x64 applications Prism could accommodate. It did not create a new app format or guarantee that every x64 program would work. [Microsoft’s Build 27744 announcement]
Windows versions: when x64 emulation arrived
- December 10, 2020: Microsoft previewed x64 emulation in Windows 10 on Arm Insider Dev Channel Build 21277.
- November 16, 2021: Microsoft updated its announcement to say x64 emulation was generally available in Windows 11 on Arm. Windows 10 on Arm remained limited to x86 emulation.

How Prism runs x64 applications
Prism translates blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions using just-in-time compilation, then caches translated blocks to reduce the work needed on later runs. The app does not have to be modified for this translation process. Microsoft describes x86 apps as using the WOW64 layer; x64 apps use Arm64X system binaries rather than a separate redirected system-binary tree. [Microsoft Learn: How emulation works on Arm]

Emulation applies to user-mode code, not kernel-mode components. A printer driver, antivirus driver or other kernel-mode driver needs an Arm64 build; Prism cannot make an x86 or x64 driver run as an Arm driver.
What may still fail on a Windows on Arm PC
Support for more CPU instructions helps with one important class of x64 compatibility problems, but compatibility depends on more than the app’s main executable. Check the specific software and connected hardware before relying on them.

- Driver-dependent devices and tools: Peripherals, antivirus products, virtualization tools, assistive technologies and system-customization utilities may rely on drivers or other components that need native Arm64 versions.
- Games with anti-cheat: A game can fail if its anti-cheat system depends on a driver that is not designed for Windows 11 on Arm.
- Apps requiring particular CPU features: AVX, AVX2 and the other extensions in the Prism update broaden support, but Microsoft does not promise that every app with x64 requirements will work.
- Older Windows version: Windows 10 on Arm does not run x64 apps through emulation.

- Check for a native Arm64 version. Microsoft says apps rebuilt for Arm offer the best performance. If the developer provides one, prefer it over running the x64 build through emulation.
- Confirm the required Windows version. For x64 emulation, look for a Windows 11 Arm PC; Windows 10 on Arm is not sufficient.
- Check drivers and connected equipment. Confirm that required printers, security software, accessibility devices and other peripherals have Arm64 drivers or are otherwise supported on your exact Windows version.
- For games, verify anti-cheat support. A game that launches successfully may still depend on an incompatible anti-cheat driver.
- Check the app’s CPU-feature requirements. Prism’s 2024 update adds AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, F16C and other extensions, but a specific application’s compatibility should be confirmed rather than inferred from the announcement.
Microsoft identifies Snapdragon X series Copilot+ PCs in its Arm support guidance and says performance features require hardware available in Snapdragon X series processors. Developers can use the Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows for development and testing; Microsoft also points developers to App Assure’s Arm Advisory Service for compatibility help.
