AI can produce a mobile-app specification in seconds, but speed does not make the text correct, complete, or agreed. Treat every generated statement as a draft: recover the stakeholder need, rewrite one behavior at a time, replace vague language with observable conditions, define acceptance evidence, and obtain human agreement before baselining it.
This workflow applies to product managers, founders, designers, developers, and QA teams working on iOS, Android, or cross-platform products. It uses established requirements-engineering guidance; it does not assume that AI has validated a platform-specific rule or that a particular prompt guarantees better requirements.
What a reviewable mobile requirement contains
A useful requirement tells the team what the product must do, under which conditions, and what evidence will show that it does it. It has a clear subject, an action, and enough context for independent review. Keep the requirement itself separate from its explanation, business rationale, design note, or implementation suggestion.

NASA’s Appendix C also uses the compact convention “Shall = requirement”; that is the handbook’s terminology convention, not a universal rule for every team’s style guide. See NASA’s Appendix C guidance.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
For a mobile app, a statement such as “The app should make sign-in easy and fast” is not reviewable. It does not identify the actor, trigger, completion condition, supported situation, or evidence. A more useful draft might be:
The app shall allow a registered user to submit valid email and password credentials from the Sign in screen and display the Home screen after the authentication service confirms success.
That sentence still needs decisions about network failure, lockout, accessibility, and timing, but its primary behavior can be inspected and tested. Keep those additional behaviors as separate requirements rather than attaching them with “and also.”
A six-pass workflow for refining AI output
1. Recover the intent before polishing wording
Start with the reason the statement exists. Ask which user, business objective, risk, or higher-level requirement it serves. A generated sentence may sound plausible while describing an unrequested feature, encoding an assumption as fact, or contradicting a product decision.

- Copy the generated statement into a review record without silently editing away its original meaning.
- Identify the stakeholder need or outcome behind it, such as reducing abandoned checkout, meeting a regulatory obligation, or giving support staff a reliable status.
- Confirm that the need is real with the product owner or authorized stakeholder.
- Record assumptions, constraints, and rationale next to the requirement. For example, “Authentication is handled by the existing identity service” is an assumption, not a behavior the app can guarantee by itself.
- Delete statements that have no meaningful connection to a stakeholder expectation, duplicate another requirement, or conflict with an approved decision.
NASA’s technical-requirements guidance says to check necessity, assumptions, traceability, consistency, feasibility, and stakeholder agreement before baselining. The relevant process is described in NASA’s Technical Requirements Definition.
2. Rewrite one behavior at a time
Use the team’s agreed terms for the app, users, screens, services, and data. Choose a direct subject and active action where practical. Split a sentence whenever it contains independent behaviors, separate actors, or a behavior plus its rationale.
| AI-generated wording | Why it fails review | Separated, observable requirements |
|---|---|---|
| The app shall let users quickly upload a profile photo and crop it nicely, then notify support if the upload fails. | It bundles upload, editing, a subjective quality claim, and a support notification. |
|
| The system should appropriately protect personal data. | “Appropriately” has no defined control, scope, or test. | The specification must name the data, protection control, operating condition, and verification evidence agreed by security and privacy stakeholders. |
| Users can manage notifications easily. | It does not identify notification types, settings, or a measurable result. | The app shall provide a Notifications settings screen where a signed-in user can enable or disable each listed notification category and save the selections. |
Do not force every requirement to use identical grammar if doing so obscures the actor. Consistency means that the same concept has the same name and that similar requirements follow a predictable pattern; it does not mean every sentence is mechanically identical.
3. Replace vague claims with observable conditions
Words such as “easy,” “fast,” “robust,” “appropriate,” “seamless,” and “user-friendly” describe an aspiration rather than a pass or fail condition. Replace them with a trigger, an observable response, and the conditions under which the response applies.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
When a threshold is not yet known, do not invent one merely to make the sentence look complete. Record the unresolved value, its decision owner, the date or milestone for resolving it, and the test method that will use the value. NASA distinguishes a value that remains to be determined from a value that requires stakeholder resolution and rationale; its guidance recommends minimizing unresolved entries and assigning responsibility.
| Vague phrase | Questions that make it testable |
|---|---|
| Loads quickly | What starts the measurement? Which device, network, build, and data set apply? Is the measure time to first content, interactive state, or completion? What percentile or tolerance is required? |
| Works offline | Which actions are available without connectivity? How is unsent data stored? What happens when connectivity returns or a conflict occurs? |
| Securely stores location | Which location values are stored, for how long, under which access controls, and what deletion or consent event removes them? |
| Supports accessibility | Which users, assistive technologies, input methods, content sizes, and success checks are in scope? |
4. Define acceptance evidence with the customer
Acceptance criteria are the conditions a system or component must satisfy for acceptance by a customer, user, or authorized entity. Agree on them early enough to shape implementation and planned acceptance activities, rather than waiting until a release candidate exists. NASA’s software handbook explains this approach in SWE-034 — Acceptance Criteria.
For each feature, specify evidence for the expected path and important failure or boundary cases. Evidence may be an automated test result, a recorded demonstration, an inspection of stored data, a security assessment, or a signed review. The criterion should make clear what a reviewer observes, not merely repeat the requirement in different words.
Requirement: The app shall allow a signed-in user to save a delivery address after all mandatory fields pass validation.
- Given valid values in every mandatory field, when the user selects Save, the app displays the saved address in the address list.
- Given a missing postal code, when the user selects Save, the app identifies the postal-code field and does not create an address record.
- Given a server timeout, when the user selects Save, the app displays a retry option and does not display the address as saved.
- A QA reviewer can verify the resulting list, validation state, and timeout behavior on the agreed test build.
Keep acceptance criteria close to the requirement in the tracking system, but do not merge several independent requirements into one criterion. A single criterion can cover a scenario; a feature with many behaviors should have several linked requirements and criteria.

5. Review the specification as a system
Sentence-level editing cannot reveal gaps between sections. Review coverage across the areas that apply to the product:
- Functional behavior and user roles
- Performance, capacity, storage, latency, accuracy, and precision
- Interfaces between the app, operating system, backend services, devices, and external systems
- Security, privacy, identity, permissions, and audit events
- Reliability, recovery, data integrity, and behavior after interruption
- Error handling, validation, empty states, and user-visible status
- Environment assumptions such as connectivity, device capabilities, locale, time zone, and supported app versions
- Verification method, acceptance owner, and traceability to a stakeholder need
NASA’s Appendix C checklist explicitly calls out clarity, ambiguity, completeness, consistency, traceability, correctness, performance, interfaces, reliability, maintainability, and verifiability. NASA’s software-requirements guidance frames validation around clarity, completeness, consistency, verifiability, and traceability; see SWE-050 — Software Requirements.
6. Baseline only after human agreement
A baseline is an agreed reference point for design, implementation, testing, and change control. Before placing a requirement under formal change control, authorized reviewers should agree that it is clear, correct, complete enough for its purpose, feasible, and achievable. NASA’s technical-requirements material describes this validation and stakeholder-agreement step before baselining.

AI can draft, classify, find duplicated terms, or flag possible ambiguity. It cannot supply stakeholder authority, confirm an unstated business rule, or prove that a generated behavior is feasible. Record who approved the requirement, which version was reviewed, open assumptions, and the evidence expected at acceptance. A later change should identify the affected requirements, tests, designs, and release decisions.

Make mobile behavior specific without inventing platform rules
The reviewed guidance is general requirements guidance, not an iOS or Android checklist. Do not claim that a particular operating-system label, permission flow, lifecycle callback, store rule, or device limit is current unless it has been verified against the relevant official platform documentation. Instead, specify the product behavior and identify platform details as constraints to confirm.
Describe the trigger, response, and conditions
Mobile behavior is often interrupted by navigation, backgrounding, rotation, permission changes, connectivity loss, or a process restart. Capture the observable contract rather than an implementation guess.
| Behavior area | Questions for the requirement | Example requirement pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | What feature needs access, when is consent requested, and what can the user do after denial? | The app shall request camera access when the user selects Scan, and shall show a manual-entry path when access is denied. |
| Interruption | What state must survive backgrounding, an incoming call, or a process restart? | The app shall preserve entered but unsent form values when the user leaves the form and returns during the same authenticated session. |
| Connectivity | Which actions require a network, what is shown during failure, and how are retries handled? | The app shall display the last synchronized order status with its synchronization time when the status service is unavailable. |
| Deep link | What happens for a signed-out user, an expired link, or an unknown resource? | The app shall route an authenticated user to the referenced order and show an error state when that order is unavailable. |
| Notifications | Which event creates a notification, what content is exposed, and what destination opens? | Select the event, privacy-safe preview, delivery condition, and destination as separate reviewable decisions. |
Separate product requirements from implementation choices
“The app shall use a particular framework” is an implementation constraint, not necessarily a user-facing requirement. Keep architecture, library, and code-organization decisions in the appropriate design record unless a stakeholder requirement makes them mandatory. A product requirement can say that a screen remains usable after a supported interruption; the design can decide whether to meet that through local persistence, state restoration, or another mechanism.
Turn performance language into a measurement plan
NASA names timing, throughput, storage size, latency, accuracy, and precision as examples of performance specifications. Choose the measure that matters to the user or system, and carry its conditions with the value.
- Define the event that starts the clock and the event that stops it. “Launch time” could mean process start to first frame, or launch to interactive content.
- State the build, device class, operating-system version, data volume, account state, and network condition used for the check.
- Choose a statistic or tolerance with the stakeholder, such as a maximum, percentile, error range, or sustained rate.
- Specify how the result is collected and who reviews exceptions.
- Link the measure to an acceptance criterion and to the risk it controls.
For example, replace “The search screen shall return results quickly” with a requirement that names the query, result set, start and end events, environment, and agreed response target. If the target is still undecided, write that the product owner must approve it before performance acceptance begins; do not substitute an arbitrary number.
Build traceability from need to test
Traceability prevents an attractive sentence from becoming orphaned text. Give each requirement an identifier and connect it to the need, assumption, design element, implementation work, acceptance criterion, and verification result that apply.

| Record | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Stakeholder need | The user or business outcome, owner, and source decision |
| Requirement | One independently reviewable behavior or constraint |
| Rationale | Why the requirement is necessary and which risk or goal it addresses |
| Assumptions and constraints | Dependencies, operating conditions, policy limits, and unresolved decisions |
| Design link | The design artifact or interface that realizes the requirement |
| Acceptance criterion | The observable pass condition and important failure or boundary cases |
| Verification result | Test, inspection, analysis, or demonstration evidence and its status |
NASA’s requirements process guidance recommends checking that requirements are necessary, traceable to stakeholder expectations, consistent, feasible, and supported by explicit assumptions. If a generated statement cannot be linked to a need or a verification method, ask whether it belongs in the specification at all.

Worked example: refining a generated checkout statement
Suppose an AI tool produces: “The app should make checkout seamless, remember the user’s details, and quickly confirm the order even if the connection is bad.” Treat it as four questions, not a finished requirement.
Recover the decisions
- Which checkout step is in scope: address, payment, review, or order submission?
- Which details may be stored, for how long, and under what consent or account condition?
- What does “confirm” mean: local acknowledgement, server-created order, payment authorization, or all three?
- What should happen during a lost connection, and can the app safely retry without creating a duplicate order?
Split the behaviors
- The app shall display a review screen containing the selected items, delivery address, taxes, and total before order submission.
- The app shall allow a signed-in user to opt in to saving a delivery address for a future checkout.
- The app shall submit an order only after the payment service confirms authorization.
- The app shall display a pending state when the submission response is unavailable and shall prevent an additional submission until the order status is resolved.
- The app shall display the server-assigned order identifier after the order service confirms creation.
Attach acceptance evidence
Reviewers can verify the review contents with a seeded cart, inspect that opt-out addresses are not offered as saved choices, simulate an authorization failure, interrupt connectivity during submission, and confirm that a resolved order cannot be submitted twice from the same checkout attempt. Any timing target, retry limit, retention period, or duplicate-detection rule must be approved as an explicit value rather than hidden inside “quickly” or “remember.”
Common failure modes and recovery actions
The AI invented a feature or policy
Mark the statement as an assumption and ask the product or policy owner to confirm it. If no owner can justify it, remove it. Do not preserve a plausible feature merely because it appears in several generated drafts.
One requirement contains a whole user journey
Map the journey, then create separate requirements for entry conditions, each meaningful behavior, completion, interruption, and failure handling. Link them to a shared goal so the decomposition remains understandable.

Acceptance criteria repeat the requirement
Rewrite the criterion as evidence: a specific input, state, observation, record, or measurement that a reviewer can produce. If no evidence can be named, the requirement is not yet verifiable.
Thresholds are missing near release
Escalate the unresolved decision to its owner and record the impact on design, test data, and schedule. A made-up threshold creates a false sense of agreement; an explicitly unresolved value creates a decision that can be managed.
Two teams use different names for the same object
Create a small glossary and update the requirements, interface descriptions, test cases, and UI copy to use the approved term. Ambiguous terminology is a specification defect, not merely a style issue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The specification is clear but infeasible
Ask engineering, security, operations, and QA to review constraints and evidence before baselining. Rewrite the requirement around the stakeholder outcome when an implementation detail is unnecessarily restrictive, or obtain an explicit decision when the constraint is mandatory.
What AI should and should not do in the workflow
Use AI for bounded editorial work: extracting candidate actors and actions, detecting duplicate terms, flagging pronouns and subjective adjectives, proposing questions for missing conditions, and checking whether each requirement has a linked acceptance criterion. Require a human to confirm the underlying need, assumptions, feasibility, risk, privacy implications, and final wording.
None of the cited guidance establishes that AI-generated requirements are inherently reliable or that a particular prompting technique improves their quality. The reliable control is the review process: stakeholder validation, explicit rationale, measurable conditions, traceability, and evidence-based acceptance. The resulting mobile specification is stronger because people have agreed what the product must do and how they will know it does so—not because generated prose was treated as authoritative.
