Jump Desktop is the best overall remote desktop software for Mac users who want a polished Mac client and access to Mac and Windows computers. Splashtop is better for creative, high-resolution, or multi-monitor work; TeamViewer is strongest for support; AnyDesk suits weaker connections; Chrome Remote Desktop is the simplest free option; and Windows App is best for Microsoft-hosted Windows desktops.

“Remote desktop software for Mac” can describe two different things: an app installed on your Mac to control another computer, or software that lets another device control a Mac. That distinction matters. Microsoft Windows App is excellent for connecting from a Mac to Windows PCs and Microsoft cloud desktops, but it is not a general-purpose replacement for TeamViewer, Splashtop, or Jump Desktop when the remote host is a Mac.

The six picks below are ranked by use case rather than by an absolute performance test. The right choice depends on the host operating system, whether access is attended or unattended, how much graphical performance you need, your security requirements, and whether you prefer a free client, subscription, or one-time purchase.

Key takeaways

  • Jump Desktop is the best overall choice for Mac-centric users because it supports RDP, VNC, and Fluid connections in a Mac-oriented client.
  • Splashtop is the strongest pick for creative applications, high-quality streaming, and multi-monitor work, although advanced features depend on the plan.
  • TeamViewer is the best general-purpose remote-support choice, while AnyDesk is a lighter option for responsive access over weaker connections.
  • Chrome Remote Desktop is free and simple, but it lacks the administration, auditing, and support features found in commercial platforms.
  • Windows App is Microsoft’s Mac client for Remote PCs, Remote Desktop Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Dev Box environments; it is not a universal Mac-to-Mac remote-access service.

What is the difference between a Mac remote-desktop client and a remote-access service?

A remote-desktop client is the app on the Mac you use to control another computer. A remote-access service normally also requires a host component on the computer being controlled, plus an account or connection configuration that links the two devices.

For example, Windows App is primarily a client for Microsoft environments. The Windows computer, Remote Desktop Services deployment, Azure Virtual Desktop workspace, Windows 365 Cloud PC, or Dev Box must already exist and be configured to accept the connection. By contrast, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Splashtop, Chrome Remote Desktop, and Jump Desktop can be used as broader remote-access products, although each uses different host software, connection methods, and account requirements.

Connection goal Most relevant choices What to verify first
Mac to Windows PC Windows App, Jump Desktop, Splashtop, TeamViewer, AnyDesk Windows edition, Remote Desktop settings, firewall, VPN, or host agent
Mac to Mac Jump Desktop, Splashtop, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Chrome Remote Desktop, macOS Screen Sharing Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions on the Mac host
Windows or mobile device to a Mac TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Splashtop, Jump Desktop, Chrome Remote Desktop Host installation, unattended-access settings, and macOS privacy permissions
Remote technical support TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Splashtop Remote Support, Zoho Assist Attended-session approval, commercial licensing, logs, and support controls
Microsoft cloud desktop Windows App Whether the organization provides Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Dev Box, or another supported service
Large Mac fleet Apple Remote Desktop or endpoint-management software Device inventory, deployment, reporting, permissions, and administrator roles

1. Jump Desktop: best overall remote desktop software for Mac users

Jump Desktop is the best overall pick for Mac-centric users who want a clean Mac experience and connections to both Mac and Windows computers without immediately buying a full remote-support suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jump Desktop supports RDP, VNC, and Fluid connections, according to its official product page. RDP is useful for Windows hosts and compatible servers, VNC is a common option for Mac and other systems, and Fluid is Jump Desktop’s own connection technology. RDP and VNC may require separate host configuration; a proprietary relay-based connection can be simpler when the product and host are configured for it.

Why choose Jump Desktop?

  • Mac-oriented interface and workflow.
  • Support for mixed Mac and Windows environments.
  • RDP and VNC compatibility for users who already have those services configured.
  • A reported one-time Mac purchase option, which can be attractive for an individual who dislikes subscriptions.

The main qualification is scope. Jump Desktop is not positioned as a complete help-desk platform with the same support workflow emphasis as TeamViewer. Buyers should also verify the current Mac price, whether mobile apps are separate purchases, and which team or cloud features require Jump Desktop Teams.

Setup: install the Jump Desktop client on the Mac, install or configure the required host service on the remote computer, sign in or add the connection, then grant the host’s requested macOS permissions. For RDP or VNC, confirm the host address, credentials, firewall, and network path before troubleshooting the client.

Best for: Mac owners who regularly connect to a personal Mac and Windows PC and want a polished general-purpose tool.

2. Splashtop Remote Access: best for creative work and performance

Splashtop Remote Access is the best choice in this list for demanding remote work such as video editing, design, high-resolution applications, and multi-monitor productivity, provided the network and subscription tier are suitable.

Splashtop targets individuals and small teams with Remote Access, while Splashtop Remote Support is a separate product for IT professionals. The distinction matters: a Remote Access plan should not be assumed to include every help-desk feature.

Splashtop’s official feature matrix lists support across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Chromebook scenarios, along with Apple Silicon Mac support, file transfer, remote printing, remote reboot, Wake-on-LAN, multi-monitor modes, session recording, activity logging, device authentication, and two-step verification. The matrix also places features such as USB redirection and stylus support on higher-tier Performance plans.

Why choose Splashtop?

  • Designed around high-quality remote streaming rather than only basic screen control.
  • Useful multi-monitor support, with availability depending on the plan.
  • Features relevant to creative work, including higher-tier stylus and USB capabilities.
  • Individual and team offerings, with a trial promoted on the product page.

Splashtop is not automatically the cheapest choice for occasional access. A reported comparison placed plans at approximately $5 per month, but the exact price depends on plan, billing period, location, promotion, tax, and account type. Check the current Splashtop Remote Access product information and pricing before subscribing.

Setup: create an account, install Splashtop Streamer on the host computer, install the Mac client, register the host, and grant macOS Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions when requested. Configure display quality, audio, file transfer, multi-monitor behavior, and unattended access before relying on the connection while traveling.

Best for: remote workers, editors, designers, and small teams that value smooth high-resolution access more than a free plan.

3. TeamViewer: best for remote technical support

TeamViewer is the best pick for helping family members, customers, colleagues, or clients because its mature cross-platform feature set covers attended support, unattended access, file transfer, collaboration, and session records.

TeamViewer comparison material lists remote control, file transfer, session recording, Easy Access, unattended access, cross-platform compatibility, and support-oriented additions. The TeamViewer feature comparison is useful for checking which capabilities belong to which current plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose TeamViewer?

  • Good distinction between an attended support session and permanent unattended access.
  • File transfer and collaboration tools for troubleshooting.
  • Session recording and administrative features for support workflows.
  • Broad client availability for mixed-device households and organizations.

TeamViewer is more complex and potentially more expensive than Chrome Remote Desktop for one personal computer. TeamViewer’s free personal-use availability must not be treated as a free business-support license. Anyone using TeamViewer for work, customer support, or paid consulting should review the current commercial plan and licensing terms on the TeamViewer buying page.

Setup: install TeamViewer on the host and Mac, choose attended support or unattended access, authenticate the connection, and configure device authorization and permissions. For support, ask the person at the remote computer to approve the session rather than leaving permanent access enabled unless permanent access is genuinely necessary.

Best for: IT consultants, support desks, small businesses, and people who frequently need to control someone else’s computer with permission.

4. AnyDesk: best lightweight option for weaker connections

AnyDesk is the best lightweight choice when responsive interaction and simple deployment matter, especially over a less capable network where a large, feature-heavy support suite is unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AnyDesk’s official remote-desktop page lists remote support, remote access, file transfer, clipboard exchange, remote printing, unattended access, Wake-on-LAN, two-factor authentication, and native clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, and ChromeOS. AnyDesk also describes cloud and on-premises deployment options. Those capabilities are documented on the AnyDesk remote desktop page.

  • 12-Month Battery Life: Enjoy a reliable 12-month battery life (1) and auto sleep feature for longer use between battery changes; 1 AA battery included

Why choose AnyDesk?

  • Small, cross-platform clients that are convenient to deploy.
  • Unattended access for reaching a computer without someone present.
  • File transfer, printing, Wake-on-LAN, and 2FA beyond basic screen sharing.
  • Cloud and on-premises options for organizations with different deployment requirements.

AnyDesk is not automatically the lowest-cost business option. Free use is generally intended for personal use, while professional features require a paid plan. A secondary comparison reported paid plans from approximately $22.90 per month, but buyers should verify the current plan, billing term, user limit, device limit, and commercial license on the AnyDesk order page.

Setup: install AnyDesk on both devices, set an attended session or configure unattended access, then restrict access through approved devices, passwords, and 2FA. Test file transfer and clipboard behavior before using the connection with sensitive data.

Best for: users who want a capable but relatively lightweight cross-platform tool and organizations that may need more deployment control later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Chrome Remote Desktop: best free option

Chrome Remote Desktop is the best free choice for simple, occasional personal access when the reader does not need advanced auditing, help-desk administration, color-critical performance, or extensive collaboration tools.

Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop service provides two clear paths: Access my computer for unattended access to a configured computer and Provide Support for a support or collaboration session. Google says the service enables access to a home or work computer from another computer, phone, or tablet and uses WebRTC and Google infrastructure.

How do you set up Chrome Remote Desktop?

  1. Open Chrome Remote Desktop on the computer that will be controlled.
  2. Choose Remote Access or Remote Support.
  3. Install the host component when Google prompts you.
  4. Name the computer and create a PIN for unattended access.
  5. Open Chrome Remote Desktop on the Mac, sign in, and select the configured host.
  6. Enter the PIN or follow the support-session instructions.

Chrome Remote Desktop’s simplicity is also its limitation. It is not the strongest choice for centralized fleet management, detailed session auditing, formal help desks, or demanding high-frame-rate creative work. Protect the Google account with a strong unique password and two-step verification, because account compromise can expose every configured host.

Best for: accessing a home computer from a laptop or phone without paying for a commercial remote-access subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Windows App: best for connecting from a Mac to Windows

Windows App is the best remote desktop client for Mac users whose destination is a Microsoft-managed Windows environment, including a Remote PC, Remote Desktop Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 Cloud PC, or Microsoft Dev Box.

Microsoft’s Windows App documentation identifies the current product name as Windows App rather than Microsoft Remote Desktop. Microsoft says the app is available for macOS, Windows, iOS/iPadOS, Android/ChromeOS, web browsers, and Meta Quest, and supports the Microsoft environments listed above.

Windows App can provide multiple monitors, custom and dynamic resolutions, and device redirection for webcams, audio, storage, and printers. Microsoft also documents Microsoft Teams optimizations. A work or school account is required for Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services. Microsoft says supported Remote PC connections can be used without signing in on supported platforms.

How do you set up Windows App on a Mac?

  1. Install Windows App on the Mac.
  2. Choose the connection type: Remote PC, Remote Desktop Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, or Dev Box.
  3. Add the PC name, workspace URL, or organizational account as required.
  4. Sign in with a work or school account when the service requires it.
  5. Configure monitors, resolution, audio, printer, webcam, and storage redirection.
  6. Connect after confirming that the Windows host permits remote connections.

Windows App does not create a Windows desktop by itself. A Microsoft 365 subscription also does not automatically include Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop. The Windows host must be powered on, network-reachable, correctly licensed or provisioned, and allowed through the organization’s firewall, VPN, identity, and conditional-access policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Home editions generally cannot act as standard Remote Desktop hosts. If the goal is to control a Mac, provide general-purpose support, or connect to an arbitrary home computer, choose a broader remote-access product instead.

Best for: Mac users working with Microsoft IT infrastructure or connecting to a company-provided Windows desktop in the cloud.

How should you choose remote desktop software for Mac?

Choose according to the host computer and the job, not simply the app with the longest feature list.

Your priority Recommended choice Reason
Occasional free personal access Chrome Remote Desktop Free, straightforward, and available from computers and mobile devices
Access a Windows PC from a Mac Windows App for Microsoft environments; Jump Desktop or another general-purpose tool for broader cases Windows App is purpose-built for supported Microsoft Windows environments
Best general Mac experience Jump Desktop Mac-oriented client with RDP, VNC, and Fluid support
Video, design, 3D, or multiple monitors Splashtop Performance-oriented features and plan options for multi-monitor and creative workflows
Helping another person TeamViewer Attended support, unattended access, file transfer, and session features
Weak or variable network AnyDesk Lightweight client and responsive-session positioning
Mac-to-Mac on a trusted network macOS Screen Sharing Built-in and free, without purchasing a third-party service
Organization-wide Mac administration Apple Remote Desktop or endpoint-management software Better aligned with inventory, deployment, observation, and reporting

How much does remote desktop software for Mac cost?

Remote desktop pricing varies more than a simple free-versus-paid table suggests. “Free” can mean a free client, personal-use-only access, a restricted tier, a trial, or free local access. Business pricing may depend on users, devices, concurrent sessions, support features, billing period, region, taxes, and promotions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Product Price signal reported in the research How to interpret it
Windows App Free client The client connects to Microsoft services or Windows environments that may themselves be paid or organization-provisioned
Chrome Remote Desktop Free Best understood as a free remote-access and support service with fewer advanced controls
Jump Desktop Approximately $35 one time for the Mac app Confirm current app price and whether mobile, team, or cloud features are separate
Splashtop Approximately $5 per month reported for some plans Plan capabilities differ; Remote Access and Remote Support are separate product lines
TeamViewer Free personal use; approximately $24.90 per month reported for paid plans Do not use a personal-use tier for commercial work without checking licensing
AnyDesk Free personal use; approximately $22.90 per month reported for paid plans Verify commercial features, device limits, and billing terms before buying

These are price signals from a June 2026 third-party comparison, not permanent quotations. See the reported Mac remote-access pricing comparison for the source context, then confirm the vendor’s current price in your country. Annual billing, tax, promotions, and plan renaming can materially change the total cost.

What should you check before installing on an Apple Silicon Mac?

Check whether the Mac client is Apple Silicon native, Universal, or Intel-only and therefore dependent on Rosetta. Also verify compatibility with the macOS release installed on the Mac and with the operating system running on the host. The research reports Apple Silicon compatibility across the tested products, but secondary testing should not replace current vendor download documentation.

For a business purchase, verify more than launch compatibility. Check whether the host agent supports the required macOS version, whether background services continue after a restart, whether screen capture and input control require separate approvals, and whether the vendor supports the Mac model and OS combination you will actually deploy.

How do you set up a Mac for reliable remote access?

  1. Install both sides: put the client on the Mac you carry and the host application or host service on the computer you intend to control.
  2. Grant macOS permissions: open System Settings → Privacy & Security and review Screen Recording, Accessibility, Full Disk Access, Microphone, Camera, Notifications, and background-service permissions as requested by the app. Labels can vary by macOS release.
  3. Configure unattended access carefully: use a strong unique password, device approval, and 2FA where available. Do not leave permanent access enabled for a support session that only needs one-time approval.
  4. Test while local: verify keyboard and mouse control, display capture, audio, clipboard, file transfer, printing, multiple monitors, and restart behavior before traveling.
  5. Prepare for sleep: a powered-off Mac cannot normally accept a remote session. Review sleep settings and Wake-on-LAN support; AnyDesk explicitly lists Wake-on-LAN, while hardware and network support still determine whether wake-up works.
  6. Keep a recovery path: retain local administrator credentials, a VPN or alternate access method where appropriate, and someone who can physically restart the host.

Why does remote desktop access fail on macOS?

Most failures come from permissions, power state, network policy, or host configuration rather than the Mac client itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom Likely cause What to check
Black or blank remote screen Screen Recording permission missing System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording
Screen appears but mouse and keyboard do not work Accessibility permission missing Allow the remote-access app under Accessibility, then restart the app
No audio, microphone, or camera Media permission or plan limitation macOS privacy controls and the product’s plan feature list
Host is offline Computer is shut down, asleep, disconnected, or host agent stopped Power, network, login items, sleep behavior, and Wake-on-LAN support
Connection works at home but not elsewhere VPN, firewall, NAT, captive portal, or carrier-grade NAT Corporate network policy, outbound access, DNS, and relay/VPN configuration
Windows App cannot connect Unsupported Windows edition or missing Microsoft environment Remote Desktop host configuration, account type, provisioning, and firewall

Do not expose raw Windows RDP directly to the public internet. If you configure RDP or VNC instead of using a managed remote-access service, use a properly secured VPN or zero-trust overlay and restrict access with network and identity controls.

What security controls matter in a remote desktop app?

A remote-access product is only as secure as its authentication, permissions, device approvals, host configuration, and operating practices. Encryption is important, but a vendor’s reference to AES-256 alone does not explain who can initiate sessions, how devices are authorized, whether sessions are logged, or what metadata passes through vendor infrastructure.

  • Authentication: enable 2FA or two-step verification and use unique credentials.
  • Device authorization: allow only known Macs, phones, and support operators.
  • Unattended-access controls: use separate passwords, restrict the account, and disable unattended access when it is not needed.
  • Least privilege: disable clipboard, file transfer, printing, USB, microphone, camera, or input control unless the task requires them.
  • Session oversight: use logs, notifications, session recording, or approval prompts where the plan provides them.
  • Privacy controls: check for screen blanking, local-input locking, and host-side indicators.
  • Deployment model: organizations should assess vendor relays, data residency, cloud administration, on-premises options, SSO, role-based permissions, and retention policies.

AnyDesk advertises 2FA, access permissions, device controls, centralized administration, and cloud or on-premises deployment. Splashtop’s feature matrix lists 256-bit AES encryption, two-step verification, device authentication, screen locking, screen blanking, password requirements, activity logging, and administrative controls. These are documented product capabilities, not a blanket guarantee that every deployment is secure.

Free and built-in alternatives

macOS Screen Sharing

macOS Screen Sharing is a sensible free alternative for straightforward Mac-to-Mac access on a trusted network. Apple documents enabling it through Mac Screen Sharing settings. Screen Sharing is not a full substitute for a commercial support platform, especially for unattended access across arbitrary networks, help-desk workflows, or centralized auditing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Remote Desktop

Apple Remote Desktop is aimed more at centralized Mac administration, observation, software distribution, and reporting than at casual access to one home computer. It is a better honorable mention for administrators managing many Macs than for a traveler who needs to open one desktop.

Other specialist options

Zoho Assist is worth considering for branded customer support and help-desk workflows. NoMachine suits technical users comfortable with more manual configuration. Royal TSX is a connection manager for RDP, VNC, SSH, and web sessions rather than a simple all-in-one remote-access service. Parsec is more appropriate for gaming and low-latency creative streaming than ordinary office administration. RemotePC is another cross-platform alternative for price-sensitive buyers, but its current price should be checked directly.

Remote-access safety checklist

  • Download the client and host software from the official vendor page or the official app store.
  • Turn on 2FA and remove unknown or obsolete devices.
  • Use unique passwords for unattended access.
  • Require approval for attended support whenever permanent access is unnecessary.
  • Disable file transfer, clipboard sharing, printing, USB, audio, or camera access when those features are not needed.
  • Keep macOS, Windows, the host agent, and the client updated.
  • Do not grant access to unsolicited callers, pop-ups, fake Microsoft agents, or unknown support representatives.
  • Review session logs and revoke old sessions after a contractor, employee, or support provider no longer needs access.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best remote desktop software for Mac users?

Jump Desktop is the best overall choice for Mac-centric users who want a polished client and access to Mac and Windows computers. Splashtop is a better fit for creative and multi-monitor work, while TeamViewer is better for remote support.

What is the best free remote desktop software for Mac?

Chrome Remote Desktop is the best simple free option for occasional personal access. Windows App is also a free client, but Windows App requires a compatible Remote PC or Microsoft-managed environment rather than providing general-purpose access to any computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows App connect from a Mac to another Mac?

Windows App is not a general-purpose Mac-to-Mac remote-access service. Microsoft positions Windows App for Remote PCs, Remote Desktop Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Dev Box environments.

Do I need to install software on the computer I want to control?

Usually, yes: most remote-access products require a host application or configured remote service on the computer being controlled. The Mac normally runs the client, while the remote computer runs the host component or accepts RDP, VNC, or another supported connection.

Is free remote desktop software safe for business support?

Not automatically. Free tiers may be limited to personal use and may lack device authorization, audit logs, role-based permissions, or commercial support controls. Review the product’s current licensing and security features before using free software for work or customer support.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose Jump Desktop for the best all-around Mac experience, Splashtop for demanding visual and multi-monitor work, TeamViewer for helping other people, AnyDesk for lightweight cross-platform access, Chrome Remote Desktop for free personal use, and Windows App for Microsoft-managed Windows desktops. Before installing, identify the host computer, confirm the connection direction, check Apple Silicon and macOS compatibility, review commercial licensing, and enable the required security controls.
