The best beard trimmer depends more on your beard length and grooming routine than on motor speed alone. A short-stubble user needs a compact tool with shaving capability; someone with a dense, curly beard may be better served by a clipper-style machine; and precise cheek or neckline work calls for a visible detailing blade rather than a case full of guards.

These six picks cover those different jobs. The Braun Series 9 is the most complete premium option, the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 MG7790 offers the most useful attachments for the money, and the Wahl Magic Clip is the strongest choice for thick beards and head hair. If you mainly maintain stubble, the Philips OneBlade is easier to handle than a conventional beard trimmer.

1. Braun Series 9: best overall

The Braun Series 9 is the easiest recommendation when you want one premium device to handle most beard jobs without constantly changing tools. Philips Norelco All-in-One 3000 13-in-1 Trimmer, Face & Hair, Comfort Tips
  • Skin-Friendly Blades: Rounded comfort-blade tips feel gentle on skin for a quick, comfortable trim when shaping beard or hair
  • 13-in-One Versatility: Trim beard, head, nose and ear hair with 13 pieces; 9 settings from 0.5-16 mm cover clean stubble to longer styles
  • Self-Sharpening Blades: Maintenance-free steel blades stay as sharp as day one and require no oiling for reliable precision
  • Ergonomic Control: Easy-to-hold handle supports comfortable maneuvering so beard shaping and hair touch-ups feel controlled
  • 60-Minute Runtime: Battery indicator and USB-A charging support home or travel use; rinseable blades and combs clean easily; warranty of up to 5 years¹

Its tested adjustment range is 0.5–20 mm across 40 settings, with roughly three hours of cordless runtime. It is also waterproof and covered by a two-year warranty. That combination makes it useful for maintaining a short beard, shaping a longer one, cleaning up edges, and removing small areas of stubble.

The main reason to choose it over a cheaper multigroomer is control. The adjustment wheel makes incremental changes less fiddly than sorting through a large collection of individual combs. It is a good match for someone who has settled on a particular beard length but occasionally wants to edge, detail, or shave around it.

There is an important model-number issue. Braun’s current Series 9 BT9560 page lists 52 settings in 0.25-mm steps, up to 180 minutes of cordless runtime, and 100% waterproofing. Those numbers should not be mixed with the 40-setting specification from the tested WIRED model. Confirm the exact BT model and regional package before comparing prices or specifications.

Choose it if: you want the most complete, least complicated premium beard-trimming kit.

Skip it if: your priority is a very close razor-like shave or maximum cutting power through thick bulk. Its guardless shave is not as close as a dedicated foil shaver or razor.

2. Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 MG7790: best value

The MG7790 is the practical choice for people who want one device for beard, body, nose, eyebrows, sideburns, and occasional hair trimming. WIRED reports 23 attachments, including a T-trimmer, precision foil shaver, nose trimmer, body-grooming guards, eyebrow and sideburn guards, hair guards, and adjustable guides.

It provides more than 40 length options. Beard settings cover 1–7 mm, while hair guards extend to 16 mm. Runtime exceeds five hours, and unlike the newer Multigroom 9000, the MG7790 can be used both corded and cordless according to WIRED’s testing. That plugged-in fallback is useful when the battery is empty and you need to trim immediately.

This is a particularly good deal for users who would otherwise buy separate tools for body grooming and facial hair. It is also a sensible option for households where several people use different attachments.

The trade-off is organization. Twenty-three attachments are useful only if you can identify and store them. The markings are small, and it may take several sessions to learn which guard produces the length you want. Philips also sells closely related Multigroom models with different suffixes and box contents, so do not assume every MG7790 listing includes exactly the same accessories.

Note: USB cable included; wall adapter sold separately or reuse your phone charger
  • Comfortable Trim Without Skin Irritation — Stainless Blades With R-Rounded Edges: Sharp stainless steel blades cut cleanly on the first pass, while the R-shaped rounded blade tips reduce risk of nicks and skin irritation around sensitive areas. 3. Wahl Black Peanut: best durable corded option

The Black Peanut is a small, barber-style trimmer for users who prefer a straightforward corded tool. It includes four guards covering 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch, along with oil, a cleaning brush, and a blade guard. WIRED gives it a one-year warranty.

Its rotary motor and light body make it effective for outlining and maintaining short beards. Because it runs from the mains, there is no battery to age or recharge, and its power remains consistent during a long trimming session. That makes it attractive for home users who value serviceability over travel convenience.

Maintenance is part of the ownership experience: WIRED recommends oiling it at least twice a year. Do not treat it like a shower trimmer. The Black Peanut is not waterproof, must remain plugged in, and has only four guard lengths. Used guardless on the neck, it can pull wispy hairs, and its finish is not as close as a foil shaver or razor.

Also check that you are buying the Black Peanut, not the cordless Peanut Li. They are different products; the Peanut Li is described separately and reaches up to 7,000 rpm.

Choose it if: you want a compact, uncomplicated corded trimmer for short-beard work and outlining.

Skip it if: you need cordless operation, waterproofing, many length choices, or a travel-friendly all-in-one kit.

4. BaBylissPro x Tomb45 Wireless-Charging Hair Trimmer: best for outlining

This is the specialist pick for sharp cheek lines, necklines, sideburns, and freehand edge work. Its reverse-oriented blade improves visibility because the cutting edge sits in a position that lets you see the line more clearly while shaping it.

  • IPX6 Waterproof & Easy Clean: Designed for wet/dry versatility, this mustache trimmer for men easily rinses clean under the tap after use, whether dry shaving or using foam. Clean the blades with the included brush, let the electric trimmer air dry, and occasionally apply a drop of oil to maintain peak performance. This men's shaving kit is built for convenience.
  • Perfect Gift for Him & Idea Gifts: With its premium design and all-in-one functionality—capable of expertly trimming beards, hair, nose, and body hair—this beard trimmer for men makes a thoughtful gift for dads, sons, partners, boyfriend, or any man who appreciates top grooming tools. It's an ideal choice for birthdays, christmas, Father's Day, or anniversaries day gift. Its versatility and quality ensure it becomes a daily essential he'll truly appreciate.

WIRED measured more than three hours of battery life and highlighted the 7,500-rpm turbo mode, rubberized grip, percentage-based battery display, and two-speed motor. Published specifications also list waterproofing, USB-C plus a proprietary charging port, a blade-oil reservoir, and a two-year warranty.

It is not a complete beard-maintenance kit out of the box. No attachments are included, although it accepts standard Wahl trimmer guards. The optional wireless charging mat is sold separately, so the wireless-charging feature increases the total cost rather than being ready to use in the package.

That arrangement makes sense for a barber or an experienced home user who already owns guards and wants a dedicated detailer. It makes less sense as a first and only beard trimmer for someone who needs several fixed lengths.

Choose it if: clean lines and visibility while edging matter more than a large accessory selection.

Skip it if: you expect included guards, a complete grooming kit, or wireless charging without buying an additional mat.

5. Philips OneBlade: best for stubble

The OneBlade is the simplest choice for maintaining permanent stubble and making quick touch-ups. Its adjustable guard offers 12 settings from 0.4–9 mm, and the compact, lightweight body is easier to maneuver than a full-size clipper. It is waterproof, includes a travel pouch, runs for about two hours, and has a two-year warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 9-mm ceiling defines its role. It is not a full-beard trimmer. If you maintain a beard longer than 9 mm, choose a conventional guarded trimmer such as the Braun, Philips Multigroom, or a clipper-style Wahl instead.

The OneBlade also has an ongoing blade cost. The replaceable cutting blade generally needs replacement a couple of times per year, so include the price of a two-pack annual supply when comparing ownership costs. Its shaving performance is useful for cleanup but only middling if your goal is a completely smooth finish.

Charging is another small inconvenience: the OneBlade uses a proprietary charger rather than USB-C. That is worth remembering if you travel with USB-C devices and want to carry one cable.

Choose it if: you normally wear stubble, want quick maintenance, and also want basic shaving capability.

Skip it if: you grow a long or dense beard, want a one-time purchase with no recurring blade cost, or require a USB-C charger.

6. Wahl Professional Magic Clip 5 Star: best for head-and-beard trimming

The Magic Clip is the closest thing in this group to a traditional professional clipper. WIRED’s current pick is the Black model with the gold-colored blade. It has a 6,500-rpm motor, adjustable taper lever, self-sharpening blade, eight cutting guides, and a range from 1/16 inch to 1 inch. The taper lever adjusts from 0.5–1.2 mm.

That makes it the strongest option here for thick or curly beards, removing bulk, trimming head hair, and creating fades. Its clipper-style cutting action is better suited to dense growth than a small detailer, and the longer guides make it useful beyond the face.

Runtime is 100 minutes. It includes a styling comb, oil, cleaning brush, and blade guard, but no foil shaver or dedicated detail attachments. It is also not waterproof. The larger body is less comfortable for tight neckline work, and it will not produce a baby-smooth finish without a razor or separate shaver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model identification matters. Look for the Magic Clip Black with the gold-colored blade if you want the more powerful current version. Do not assume an older lower-rpm Magic Clip or a differently colored edition has the same motor and performance.

Choose it if: you have a thick beard, trim your head hair, or want clipper-style power for fades and bulk removal.

Skip it if: you mainly need compact detail work, shower use, or an integrated shaving head.

How to choose the right beard trimmer

Match the tool to your maximum length

For stubble up to 9 mm, the OneBlade is convenient. For a wider range of beard lengths, the Braun Series 9 and MG7790 are easier to adapt. For beards that need bulk removal or overlap with head-hair trimming, the Magic Clip’s guides up to 1 inch are more appropriate.

Separate trimming from shaving

A trimmer shortens hair; it does not necessarily leave skin smooth. The Braun and MG7790 include shaving attachments, and the OneBlade can shave and trim, but none should automatically be treated as equivalent to a razor or dedicated foil shaver. If your routine depends on a smooth neckline, plan for a separate finishing tool or accept a visibly closer-but-not-clean finish.

Decide whether you want guards or an adjustable mechanism

The Braun’s wheel keeps length changes on the device. The Philips MG7790 and Wahl Magic Clip rely more heavily on supplied guards. The BaBylissPro has no included attachments, while the Peanut gives you only four fixed guard options. More guards increase flexibility but also increase the chance of choosing, losing, or cleaning the wrong part.

Check charging and water-use claims carefully

“Cordless” does not mean USB-C. The OneBlade uses a proprietary charger, and the BaBylissPro uses USB-C alongside a proprietary port. The MG7790 can be used corded or cordless, while the Wahl Peanut and Magic Clip have different cord and water limitations. Always check the exact manual before rinsing a device or using it in the shower.

Maintenance that prevents common problems

  1. Remove hair after each session. Brush the blade and attachment edges instead of allowing cut hair to pack around the teeth.
  2. Oil the blades when the manufacturer requires it. This is especially important for the Wahl Black Peanut, for which WIRED recommends oiling at least twice per year.
  3. Keep nonwaterproof tools dry. The Black Peanut and Magic Clip are not waterproof. Do not rinse them simply because another model in the same bathroom is washable.
  4. Replace consumable blades. OneBlade users should budget for replacement blades roughly a couple of times per year, depending on use and cutting performance.
  5. Store guards with the device. Small markings and numerous attachments make the MG7790 particularly easy to misconfigure or misplace.

Our buying recommendation

Buy the Braun Series 9 if you want the best premium all-rounder and prefer changing lengths with a wheel. Choose the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 MG7790 for the most grooming functions per dollar. Pick the Wahl Magic Clip for dense beards, fades, or combined head-and-beard trimming. The Philips OneBlade is the right specialized tool for stubble, while the BaBylissPro x Tomb45 is the specialist for crisp lines. Choose the Wahl Black Peanut when reliable corded operation and a simple barber-style design matter more than water resistance or cordless convenience.

FAQ

What is the best beard trimmer for a full or thick beard?

The Wahl Professional Magic Clip 5 Star is the strongest choice for thick or curly beards because it has a clipper-style motor, adjustable taper lever, and guides up to 1 inch. The Braun Series 9 is better if you want more integrated detailing and shaving functions.

Is the Philips OneBlade suitable for a long beard?

No. Its adjustable guard reaches 9 mm, so it is best for stubble and short beards. For a beard longer than 9 mm, use a conventional guarded trimmer or clipper such as the Braun Series 9, Philips MG7790, or Wahl Magic Clip.

Which beard trimmer is best for sharp neckline and cheek lines?

The BaBylissPro x Tomb45 is the best specialist option because its reverse-oriented blade improves visibility while edging. It does not include guards, however, and its optional wireless charging mat costs extra.

Are all waterproof beard trimmers safe to use in the shower?

Not necessarily. Water-resistance claims vary by exact model and permitted use. The Wahl Black Peanut and Magic Clip are not waterproof, while models such as the Braun Series 9, MG7790, and OneBlade are described as waterproof. Follow the manual for the specific SKU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The Braun Series 9 is the best overall choice for a controlled, versatile beard routine. Get the Philips MG7790 if you want the most attachments and corded/cordless flexibility, the Wahl Magic Clip for thick beards and head hair, or the Philips OneBlade if you only maintain stubble. The BaBylissPro and Wahl Peanut are more specialized: one excels at edging, the other at simple corded trimming.
