Choose Wi-Fi 6 for connecting devices to a local home or office network, and consider 5G when you need cellular access while traveling or outside that network’s reach. They are different parts of wireless networking, not interchangeable versions of the same product. Which works better depends on local Wi-Fi placement and conditions, carrier coverage, compatible devices, and the services you already pay for.
What is the difference between 5G and Wi-Fi 6?
Wi-Fi 6 is the consumer-friendly name for IEEE 802.11ax, a standard used for wireless local area networks (WLANs). A Wi-Fi access point—often built into a home router—connects nearby devices to the local network and, if the router has an internet connection, to the internet.
5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile broadband. A phone or other compatible device connects over a mobile carrier’s network, which can provide service beyond the reach of one home or office network where coverage is available. A Wi-Fi 6 router does not create a 5G connection, and a 5G subscription does not by itself upgrade the Wi-Fi network inside a building.
Which should you use for your situation?
At home or in a fixed office
If you already have broadband service and need to connect devices around a home or office, Wi-Fi 6 is usually the relevant local-network option. A compatible router can distribute that broadband connection over Wi-Fi. Whether it improves your experience depends on the broadband service, router placement, building layout, interference, and whether your devices support Wi-Fi 6.

5G can also be used as an internet connection at a fixed location if a carrier offers suitable service and equipment there. That is a separate service choice: check actual address-level availability, plan terms, and how the service performs where you will use it. Neither the “5G” nor “Wi-Fi 6” label guarantees a particular speed in your rooms.
While traveling or away from your local network
5G is designed for cellular mobility, so it may be the more relevant option when you need internet access away from your home or office and your carrier provides coverage. Wi-Fi 6 is useful when you are within range of a Wi-Fi access point, such as one you control or a public network; it does not provide broad cellular coverage on its own.

Where coverage is weak or uncertain
Compare the signal where you actually need a connection, not just a coverage claim for a neighborhood or building. Wi-Fi quality depends on access-point location, walls and other obstructions, distance, competing networks, and how many devices share capacity. 5G depends on carrier coverage and local radio conditions. If service is poor in a particular room or location, the technology label alone will not identify the fix.
For an enterprise network
Businesses with many users, devices, sites, or mobility requirements may need managed Wi-Fi, private cellular, or both. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes work on interworking between private 5G and Wi-Fi, including shared identity and policy and transitions between access types. Its December 2024 announcement said a subsequent phase would focus on standards work in 2025; that dated plan does not establish that every proposal became a standard. See the WBA announcement on Wi-Fi and private 5G interworking.

How to compare the options before choosing
| Decision factor | Wi-Fi 6 | 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Where it provides access | Within range of a local access point connected to a network | Where a mobile carrier provides usable coverage |
| Mobility | Typically serves a local home, office, or venue network | Designed for mobile access across a carrier network |
| What you need | A Wi-Fi 6 access point or router, a network connection, and compatible client devices | Carrier coverage, a compatible device or 5G access equipment, and an appropriate service plan |
| Potential performance constraints | Distance, obstructions, interference in unlicensed spectrum, shared capacity, and deployment | Coverage and radio conditions, network load, device, and service setup |
| Cost to compare | Router or access-point costs and the broadband service you use | Carrier equipment and plan costs |
There is no current, country-by-country price or controlled head-to-head performance comparison established here. Check your own broadband and cellular plan costs, local carrier availability, device compatibility, and the network conditions at the places that matter to you. In a busy home or office, also consider how many devices need service and whether you can manage access-point placement or network policies.
Are 5G speeds higher than Wi-Fi 6?
Not as a dependable everyday rule. Peak rates and latency figures describe technology capabilities or targets, not what every consumer will experience. The sources available do not provide a named, directly comparable, current measured statistic for everyday consumer 5G versus Wi-Fi 6 at a particular location.

The European Commission’s broadband technology overview gives 5G capability figures of at least 10 Gbps upload and 20 Gbps download, and says application end-to-end latency can be 4 to 1 milliseconds according to the ITU. These are technology-level figures in that overview, not typical consumer results or a direct Wi-Fi 6 comparison.
Verizon Business’s enterprise comparison lists theoretical peak data rates of up to 10 Gbps for both 5G and Wi-Fi 6, and latency below 10 ms for both. Verizon labels the peak data rates theoretical, says reliable test data is unavailable, and notes that Wi-Fi can be affected by unlicensed-spectrum interference and degrade with distance. Treat those figures as a provider’s specification-level comparison, not measured results or a guarantee.

The same European Commission overview gives indicative wireless efficiency ranges of up to 300 m for Wi-Fi and 3–6 km for 4G/5G. Those broad figures are not indoor router coverage promises: shared bandwidth, peak traffic, distance, and line of sight can affect available bandwidth and signal quality. They should not replace checking coverage and performance at your own location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a Wi-Fi 6 router to use 5G?
No. A Wi-Fi 6 router upgrades or provides a local Wi-Fi network; it does not supply cellular 5G service. To use 5G, you need carrier service and compatible cellular equipment in an area with coverage. Some equipment can share an internet connection over Wi-Fi, but that does not make the Wi-Fi router itself a 5G cellular connection.
Consider a Wi-Fi 6 router only if you need to update your local WLAN and your broadband connection, home or office layout, and client devices make the change useful. Wi-Fi 6 may help with congestion and support more connected devices, but results depend on the full setup; older clients may not use Wi-Fi 6 features. The WBA’s Wi-Fi 6 overview describes the standard and its intended benefits.
Can 5G replace Wi-Fi at home?
It can be an alternative way to bring internet service into a home when a carrier offers suitable 5G coverage, equipment, and plan terms. It does not eliminate the need for a local way to connect multiple devices: you may still use Wi-Fi inside the home, whether provided by the 5G equipment or a separate access point. If you already have reliable broadband, compare the real service and total cost before switching; if coverage or performance is uncertain, verify it at the address and in the rooms where you use the connection.
