When Google will not open in Microsoft Edge, the cause may be an incorrect startup setting, corrupted cookies or cache, a problematic extension, a damaged Edge profile, or a network/security problem. Work through these five fixes in order. The first method is especially important because Edge treats the Home button, startup pages, and New tab page as separate settings.
1. Set Google as Edge’s home and startup page
Turning on the Home button does not automatically make Google open when Edge starts. Configure the two settings separately.
Set the Home button to Google
- Open Edge and select the Settings and more (…) button in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then open Start, home, and new tab.
- Under the Home-button section, turn on Show home button on the toolbar.
- Select the option to enter a specific URL and enter https://www.google.com/.
Select the Home button on the toolbar to test it. If Google opens there, the Home button is configured correctly.
Make Google open when Edge starts
- Remain on Settings > Start, home, and new tab.
- Under When Microsoft Edge starts, choose Open these pages or Open a specific page or pages. The wording varies between Edge releases.
- Select Add a new page.
- Enter https://www.google.com/, then save or confirm the entry.
This setting controls launch behavior. It does not replace Edge’s New tab page. If Google still does not appear when you open a new tab, check the New tab settings separately; a configured homepage or startup page does not automatically change a new tab.

If Edge repeatedly changes the setting back, redirects to another search page, or opens a Google-looking page with an unfamiliar address, check for unwanted software or malware. An extension or installed program may be controlling the browser.
2. Clear Edge’s cache, cookies, and site data
Damaged cached files or cookies can prevent Google from loading correctly, cause a redirect loop, or leave a broken sign-in page. Microsoft lists cached temporary internet files as a possible cause of page-display problems.
Clear the cache first
- Select Settings and more (…) > History > Open history page.
- Select Delete browsing data.
- Set Time range to All time.
- Select Browsing history and Cached images and files.
- Select Clear now, close Edge, and open it again.
Try Google again. If the page still fails, repeat the process and select all available data categories. Clearing cookies and other site data can remove a corrupted Google login or redirect cookie, but it will also sign you out of websites.
Do not assume that clearing the cache proves Google was unavailable. It only removes local Edge data that may have become invalid.

3. Disable extensions and reduce Edge’s workload
Extensions can modify search pages, block scripts, redirect traffic, or interfere with sign-in. Excessive open tabs, downloads, and other running applications can also leave Edge short of memory.

Test Google without normal browsing data
- Select Settings and more (…) > New InPrivate window.
- In the InPrivate window, visit https://www.google.com/.
If Google works in InPrivate but not in a normal window, the problem is consistent with normal profile data, cookies, or an extension. This test narrows the cause; it does not by itself identify which one is responsible.
Turn off extensions
- Enter edge://extensions in the address bar.
- Turn off every extension, particularly ad blockers, search tools, VPN extensions, and security extensions.
- Restart Edge and test Google.
- If the page works, turn extensions on one at a time until the failure returns. Remove or update the extension that causes it.
Also close unnecessary tabs and applications, pause active downloads, and restart Edge. If Edge becomes blank or unresponsive immediately after a new-tab page appears, graphics acceleration, a damaged profile, and extensions are possible causes.
To test graphics acceleration, enter edge://settings/system, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, and restart Edge. If this fixes the problem, update your computer’s graphics driver. Microsoft recommends re-enabling graphics acceleration after the driver is updated if possible.
4. Update Edge, then repair or isolate its profile
A current Edge installation and a clean profile help distinguish a browser installation problem from damaged settings or browsing data.
Update Edge
- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for updates and install any update it offers.
- Restart Edge and test https://www.google.com/.
If Edge will not launch cleanly, background processes may be preventing a fresh start:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find each msedge.exe process, select it, and choose End task.
- Start Edge again.
Test with a temporary Edge profile
Open Command Prompt and run this exact command:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe” –user-data-dir=”%TEMP%\edge-test-profile”
Try Google in the temporary window. If it works there, the normal Edge profile is the likely problem.
Create a fresh default profile
First close every Edge window. In File Explorer, enter this path in the address bar:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data
Rename the Default folder to Default.old, then start Edge. It will create a new Default folder. Test the browser before copying anything back. After confirming that it is stable, recover bookmarks and other required data from the old profile rather than replacing the entire user-data directory.
Repair Edge on Windows
- Close Edge for every Windows user.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, select its menu, and choose Modify.
- Approve the elevation prompt with Yes, then select Repair.
Repair requires an internet connection and administrative rights. Microsoft says browser data and settings should not be affected. If Modify is unavailable, Edge may be managed by an organization; contact the system administrator instead of trying to bypass the policy.

5. Check DNS, time, VPN, and security software
If Google fails in Edge and another browser, the issue is more likely to involve the network, DNS, website access, or security software. Restart the modem and router first, then test the same Google address in another browser.
Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and filtering software
Temporarily disconnect a VPN and check whether antivirus web protection, a firewall, parental-control product, or DNS filter is blocking Google. Keep security software enabled whenever possible; update it and use its documented exception or troubleshooting controls rather than leaving protection disabled.
On a work or school computer, a managed policy may control the homepage, proxy, extensions, or access to Google. In that situation, a setting that immediately reverts may be enforced by the organization.
Verify Windows time
An incorrect clock can break secure connections. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, and select Sync now. Then restart Edge and try again.
Test DNS
If Edge reports a DNS-related failure such as 0x80072EE7, Microsoft documents the following DNS test:

- Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.
- Right-click the active connection and select Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then select Properties.
- Choose the option to use specific DNS server addresses.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 as Preferred DNS and 8.8.4.4 as Alternate DNS.
- Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
These Google DNS addresses are an official Microsoft troubleshooting option for DNS-related Edge download and update failures. They are not required for Google to work and are not a guaranteed fix for every homepage problem. If changing DNS does not help, restore your previous DNS configuration or ask your network administrator.

FAQ
Why does Google open from the Home button but not when Edge starts?
The Home button and startup behavior are separate Edge settings. Configure the Home button under Settings > Start, home, and new tab, then separately add https://www.google.com/ under When Microsoft Edge starts.
Why does Google work in InPrivate but not in a normal Edge window?
The normal profile may contain a bad cookie, cached file, or extension. Clear browsing data and disable extensions at edge://extensions, then test again.

Will repairing Microsoft Edge delete my bookmarks?
Microsoft says Edge repair should not affect browser data or settings. Repair still requires an internet connection, administrator rights, and Edge to be closed for all signed-in Windows users.
Should I reset Edge or delete its entire user-data folder?
Neither is the preferred first step in the current Microsoft guidance used here. Test a temporary profile first. If needed, close Edge and rename only %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default to Default.old.
Why does Edge keep replacing Google with another homepage?
An extension, unwanted software, malware, or an organization-managed browser policy may be changing the setting. Check edge://extensions, scan the computer, and contact an administrator if the device is managed.
The Bottom Line
Start by configuring Google separately as the Home button destination and Edge’s startup page. If that is already correct, clear cached data, test InPrivate, disable extensions, update or repair Edge, and then investigate DNS, VPN, security software, and Windows time. If Google fails in every browser, focus on the network or Google’s availability rather than Edge alone.
