If Chrome opens a blank page labeled “Untitled,” first check whether it happens on one website or across several. The label alone does not identify the cause: the issue may involve the site, your connection, Chrome settings or extensions, or the device. Work through these five checks from least disruptive to most.
1. Check whether one site or several sites are affected
- Check the address bar to make sure the URL is correct, then reload the page.
- Open a second, unrelated website in Chrome. If only one site is blank, the problem may be with that site or its network path rather than Chrome generally.
- Try the affected site in another browser. If it fails there too, focus on the site or connection; if it works elsewhere, continue with Chrome-specific checks. Google recommends comparing another browser when diagnosing loading problems. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance
A blank-looking tab or “Untitled” label is not, by itself, evidence of malware or a damaged computer. Chromium documents about:blank as an ordinary empty document state that can appear before a page loads. Chromium’s explanation of special-case URLs
2. Check the connection, update Chrome, and restart it
- Confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected and other apps can access the internet. On public Wi-Fi, check whether a sign-in or terms-acceptance page is required.
- If several sites fail, consider whether the router, modem, or network itself is having trouble. Google also lists device settings such as airplane mode and security software as possible contributors to connection and loading errors. Google’s connection and loading error guidance
- Install an available Chrome update, then fully quit Chrome and reopen it. A restart can apply an update and clear a temporary browser problem.
3. Compare Incognito with your regular window
- Open a new Incognito window using Chrome’s menu, then visit the affected site.
- If it loads in Incognito but not in your regular window, return to the regular window and open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Turn extensions off, reload the site, and then switch extensions back on one at a time until the problem returns. This identifies whether an extension is involved without assuming which one is responsible.
- If extensions do not explain the difference, clear browsing data in the regular profile and try the site again. Google includes both extension checks and deleting browsing data in its troubleshooting steps. Google’s connection and loading error guidance
Incognito is a comparison, not a repair by itself. If the page also fails there, that does not prove the cause is the website; proceed to the broader device and browser checks.
4. Check security software, memory, and hardware acceleration
Make sure security software is not blocking Chrome
Check whether your firewall or antivirus software is blocking Chrome’s connection. Do not leave protection disabled as a workaround; use the security product’s own settings or help to verify Chrome’s access.

Free up memory
Close unused Chrome tabs and other apps, then reload. Google lists memory use as one possible reason pages may not load properly. Google’s connection and loading error guidance
Test hardware acceleration if the page remains blank
- In Chrome, open More > Settings > System.
- Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Chrome and check the page again. Google includes this as a troubleshooting step for Chrome problems. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance
If disabling the setting makes no difference, turn it back on. This check does not establish that the graphics hardware is faulty.

5. Reset Chrome or reinstall only if simpler checks fail
Resetting settings or uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome are later troubleshooting options in Google’s guidance, not the first response to a single blank tab. Google’s connection and loading error guidance Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance
Before resetting or reinstalling, make sure you understand what is saved in your Chrome profile and protect any important local data. Do not assume every configuration preserves unsynced information. If the issue continues, report it through Chrome’s feedback option or ask in the Chrome Help guidance and support resources.

Is this a known Chrome 153 bug?
A Google Issue Tracker report filed September 20, 2026 describes one person’s Chrome 153.0.8010.53 on Windows 11 25H2 showing blank or black pages and tabs changing to “Untitled,” including in Incognito and Guest; the same sites reportedly worked in Edge. The report was marked “New” when viewed October 8, 2026. Google said its own test with Chrome 153.0.8010.37 displayed pages normally and requested more reproduction details. This is an unconfirmed individual report, not evidence of a widespread Chrome 153 bug or a confirmed fix. Google Issue Tracker report 563833204
