Apple’s documented steps address trouble pairing; they do not guarantee a fix for every case where Bluetooth says connected but writing fails. Work through the checks below, and note where the symptom remains after pairing succeeds.
1. Check that your Apple Pencil works with your iPad
Apple makes four current Pencil models—Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation)—and they do not all work with the same iPads. Check the exact iPad model and Pencil model against Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list before troubleshooting. A Pencil that attaches to an iPad or appears in Bluetooth is not necessarily compatible for writing.
Apple recommends updating the iPad to the latest version of iPadOS and checking compatibility before pairing troubleshooting. Identify the Pencil model first; its charging and pairing method depends on both the Pencil and iPad.
2. Charge and connect the Pencil using its model-specific method
Use the appropriate physical connection for your Pencil. Apple’s pairing instructions explain that the connection may be used for pairing, charging, or both; the method varies by model and iPad.

Apple’s connection instructions are in its pairing guide; the supported device combinations are listed on its compatibility page. If you have a first-generation Pencil and an iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), Apple specifies that the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is required.
3. Restart the iPad with the Pencil connected
- Connect the Pencil to the iPad using the model-specific method above.
- Restart the iPad while the Pencil remains connected.
- After the iPad restarts, try pairing again if prompted.
Apple includes restarting with the Pencil connected in its pairing recovery steps. Also confirm Bluetooth is turned on in Settings.

4. Forget the Pencil and reconnect it
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- If Apple Pencil appears under My Devices, tap the information button beside it, then tap Forget This Device.
- Reconnect the Pencil using its model-specific method and tap Pair when the prompt appears.
- If no Pair button appears, leave the Pencil connected for one minute so it can charge, then reconnect it.
These are Apple’s documented steps for a Pencil that will not pair. They may help restore pairing, but Apple’s cited guidance does not establish that forgetting and re-pairing fixes every connected-but-not-writing problem.
5. Remove the case, then seek service if pairing still fails
If you have Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the iPad case or cover and try attaching the Pencil again. Apple specifically recommends this when those models will not pair.

If the Pair button still does not appear after the compatibility, connection, restart, Bluetooth, and reconnection steps, Apple says, “If the Pair button still doesn’t appear, you might need service.” See Apple’s pairing troubleshooting guidance or contact Apple Support.

Apple’s cited support article covers failure to pair, not a complete diagnosis of a Pencil that is shown as connected but produces no writing input. If pairing succeeds and the Pencil remains connected yet still will not write, the steps above cannot establish the cause. Avoid treating a Bluetooth connection indicator as proof that the broader writing problem is resolved; consult Apple Support for help with that symptom.
