Before your visit, follow the instructions you were given, arrive without heavy product buildup, share your hair history, and bring reference photos as a starting point—not a guarantee.
1. Assuming every appointment needs the same wash routine
There is no single wash schedule that fits every service. Salon guidance varies: JEX Salon Austin generally asks clients to arrive with clean, fully dry hair but advises against washing within 24 hours of a color appointment. Urban Betty recommends washing 12–24 hours before color and says haircut clients do not need to shampoo beforehand. JUUT suggests washing on the day of or day before a haircut unless the salon says otherwise.
Those are individual salons’ recommendations, not a universal rule. A cut, color, scalp treatment, updo, or protective-style transition may call for different preparation. If your salon has not told you what to do—or you are unsure whether its advice applies to your service—ask before appointment day rather than guessing.
2. Piling on heavy products before color or a precision service
Heavy oils, dry shampoo, and product residue are different from ordinary natural oil. JEX Salon Austin asks clients to avoid heavy oils, dry shampoo, and buildup before an appointment; Urban Betty cautions against heavy dry shampoo or product buildup before color. Hairstylist Kelly Moreno Vindel likewise advises avoiding heavy products near the roots before a color service.

These are stylist and salon recommendations, not a medical rule that applies to every head of hair. If you use a product for a specific reason or are unsure whether to wash it out, check with the salon. You do not need to buy a special shampoo or styling product to prepare.
3. Leaving out your color and chemical history
Tell your stylist what has been done to your hair, even if it happened at home or some time ago. Previous color can remain on the hair, and the details may matter when planning a new color service.

Vindel recommends mentioning box dye, at-home bleach or lightening, henna or metallic dyes, keratin or Brazilian blowout treatments, and medications. JUUT also advises discussing allergies, damage, and recent chemical treatments. If you cannot recall a product or date precisely, say what you do know; do not leave out a treatment because you are worried about being judged.
4. Treating an inspiration photo as a promised result
Reference photos can help you explain what you want, but they are not an exact instruction or a guarantee that the same look will suit your hair. JUUT recommends pointing out the specific features you like—such as texture, length, or layers—and showing examples of what you dislike, too. Your stylist can then consider your natural texture, hair condition, and lifestyle when discussing what is achievable.

Being on time gives the appointment room for consultation, cutting, and styling without rushing. If you are running late, contact the salon as soon as you can. Taylor & York says the salon may shorten or adjust the service, or reschedule it; what happens depends on that salon’s policy and the service booked.

A simple way to prepare
- Check the salon’s instructions for your specific service. If the wash timing or preparation is unclear, ask the salon directly.
- Keep heavy product buildup in mind. Follow the salon’s advice about oils, dry shampoo, and residue rather than assuming every service requires the same routine.
- Make a short history note for your stylist. Include past color, lightening, chemical treatments, allergies, damage, or other details relevant to the appointment.
- Choose a few reference photos. Be ready to describe the features you like and the ones you do not.
- Allow time to arrive, and contact the salon if that changes. Ask what options are available if you expect to be late.
