Your connection runs through several links: your ISP service, modem and router, the wireless signal, and the device receiving it. A weak link anywhere along that path can slow what you experience. Compare wired and wireless results, then test near the router and in the problem room before buying new equipment.
Start by finding where the slowdown occurs
Run several speed tests near the router and in the room where Wi-Fi feels slow. Record the results and repeat the tests after making a change; comparing locations can help distinguish a coverage issue from a broader slowdown. Microsoft recommends testing at different locations and retesting after changes.
If practical, also connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and run a test. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed diagnosis:
- Wired is slow too: The cause may be the ISP service, modem, router, cable, port, or other upstream equipment.
- Wired is strong but Wi-Fi is weak: Look at wireless coverage, interference, congestion, or the Wi-Fi capability of the device.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the components along the connection path, because its slowest component can limit performance.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
1. The Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and obstacles
Wi-Fi often performs better close to the router or access point and worse farther away. Walls and building materials can obstruct the signal, so a device may get a strong connection in one room and a poor one elsewhere.
Try placing the router or access point in a central, elevated, open location rather than in a cabinet, behind furniture, or at the edge of the home. Then retest in the room where performance is poor. Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi guidance covers how layout and location affect connectivity.

- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
If repositioning is not practical and the problem is specifically weak coverage, a Wi-Fi range extender may help extend coverage. It is not a fix for slow ISP service, a crowded network, or radio interference.
2. The device is using a band that does not suit the location—or lacks support
Wi-Fi bands trade off range, obstacle penetration, and potential throughput. The best choice depends on where the device is and what both it and the router support.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
| Band | Typical trade-off | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Typically reaches farther and passes obstacles better, but may be more congested. | Whether the device is connecting on 2.4 GHz in a distant or obstructed room. |
| 5 GHz | Typically offers faster throughput nearby, with shorter range than 2.4 GHz. | Whether distance or walls make the connection unreliable in the problem room. |
| 6 GHz | Can perform well nearby, but has shorter range and requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment. | Whether both the router and client device support Wi-Fi 6E. |
Older client devices may not support newer Wi-Fi standards. Check the device’s Wi-Fi capabilities and which band it uses before assuming the router is at fault. The typical band differences and home-layout considerations are described in Microsoft’s Wi-Fi layout guidance.
3. Interference or crowded channels are disrupting the radio link
Nearby Wi-Fi networks and other devices using the same frequencies can interfere with wireless performance. Apple lists microwaves, cordless phones, fluorescent lights, and wireless video cameras among possible sources. In its guidance published April 23, 2025, Apple says: “Wireless interference can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices to disconnect or perform poorly, but you can take steps to reduce or overcome it.” See Apple’s wireless interference guidance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check whether your router offers automatic channel selection or channel tools. A router may be able to select a less crowded channel; changing settings manually is not necessary in every home. If you suspect interference, retest in the affected location after a change rather than treating a channel adjustment as a universal fix.

Streaming video, large downloads, online games, and video calls can all use network capacity at the same time. If Wi-Fi slows mainly during busy periods, check which devices are connected and whether any are downloading or streaming heavily. Google recommends checking connected devices and usage before upgrading an internet plan: Google troubleshooting.

A slowdown that coincides with simultaneous use points toward shared demand; it does not, by itself, prove that the ISP is delivering less service. Compare results when demand is low with results during the slowdown.
5. A modem, router, cable, port, or ISP link is the bottleneck
If wired tests are also slow across devices, inspect the parts of the connection before focusing on Wi-Fi coverage. The modem, router, Ethernet cable, router port, or ISP service may be limiting the path. Check the equipment and port ratings, and confirm that the cable is suitable for the connection. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet for internet speeds above 100 Mbps; a cable cannot improve a wireless signal by itself. See Google’s guidance on connection components.
If the wired result is strong but Wi-Fi remains weak, replacing a cable is unlikely to solve the wireless problem. Return to the location, band, interference, and device checks instead. A new router is not a universal solution: it cannot fix an ISP-side limit, every source of interference, or excessive simultaneous demand.
Quick Recap
Match the fix to the symptom
- Slow mainly in one room: Test closer to the access point, improve its placement, and check the device’s band. Consider an extender only if coverage remains the issue.
- Slow at busy times: Check active devices and downloads, then compare performance when fewer devices are using the network.
- Slow on both Ethernet and Wi-Fi: Check the modem, router, ports, cables, and ISP service.
- Slow only on one device: Check that device’s Wi-Fi capability and connection band, then compare with another device in the same location.
