In 2023, Kubernetes had moved beyond experimentation into mainstream infrastructure planning. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Annual Survey 2023 found 66% of potential or actual cloud-service consumers using Kubernetes in production and another 18% evaluating it. The same survey showed container use—including pilots and evaluations—above 90%.

That adoption changed the operational questions teams had to answer. Kubernetes success increasingly depended on security controls, scalable observability, and disciplined cloud-cost management—not simply on running clusters.

The five Kubernetes trends at a glance

Trend 2023 evidence Operational change
Kubernetes became mainstream production infrastructure 66% used it in production; 18% were evaluating it (CNCF Annual Survey 2023) Platform teams focused on reliability, standardization and lifecycle management.
Containers became the normal delivery layer Container use, including pilots and evaluations, exceeded 90% (CNCF Annual Survey 2023) Application delivery increasingly assumed image-based packaging and orchestration.
Security moved to the center 40% identified security as the leading container challenge (CNCF Annual Survey 2023) Teams had to secure images, identities, policies and runtime behavior as one chain.
Observability had to scale Large container estates made metrics, events and logs harder to manage; Prometheus and OpenTelemetry adoption widened. Monitoring design became a platform concern involving cardinality, retention and alert quality.
FinOps became a Kubernetes concern 49% reported slightly or significantly higher cloud spend after implementing Kubernetes (CNCF Kubernetes FinOps microsurvey) Resource governance and multi-cluster cost visibility became operational requirements.

1. Kubernetes became a mainstream production platform

The CNCF Annual Survey 2023 described this shift as “Kubernetes solidifies its core technology status.” With 84% of surveyed potential or actual cloud-service consumers either running Kubernetes in production or evaluating it, Kubernetes was increasingly part of default infrastructure planning rather than an isolated proof of concept.

What changed for platform teams

  • Reliability became non-negotiable: teams needed upgrade policies, tested rollback procedures, backup and disaster-recovery plans, and clearly owned service-level objectives.
  • Standardization mattered more: shared cluster patterns, admission policies, namespaces and deployment conventions reduced one-off configurations across teams.
  • Lifecycle management became continuous: organizations had to plan Kubernetes version upgrades, node replacement, add-on compatibility and support windows instead of treating the cluster as a finished project.
  • Skills shifted toward platform engineering: developers increasingly consumed paved paths and internal platforms rather than administering every cluster detail themselves.

2. Containers became the normal delivery layer

Kubernetes benefited from a broader container-adoption wave. The CNCF survey reported container use above 90% when organizations piloting or actively evaluating containers were included. This distinction matters: container adoption was broader than Kubernetes adoption, so not every containerized workload required Kubernetes.

How delivery practices changed

  • Build pipelines had to produce reproducible images, record provenance and scan dependencies before deployment.
  • Teams treated image registries, tagging rules and promotion between environments as part of the release system.
  • Workload design increasingly accounted for immutable artifacts, declarative configuration, health probes and resource limits.
  • Architects had to choose deliberately between Kubernetes, managed container services, serverless containers and simpler schedulers based on operational complexity.

Containerization improved packaging consistency, but it did not automatically justify a Kubernetes control plane. The right choice still depended on workload scale, networking needs, team expertise and portability requirements.

3. Security moved to the center of platform decisions

Security was the leading challenge reported by 40% of organizations covered by the CNCF Annual Survey 2023. The figure measures how prominent the challenge was; it does not rank one security product above another.

The security areas teams had to connect

  • Image and supply-chain controls: scan base images and dependencies, restrict untrusted registries, sign artifacts where appropriate, and maintain a process for responding to newly disclosed vulnerabilities.
  • Identity and access: apply least privilege to Kubernetes users, service accounts, cloud roles and CI/CD systems. Separate human administration from workload identity.
  • Policy enforcement: use admission controls to reject unsafe configurations, such as privileged containers, unapproved registries or missing resource limits.
  • Runtime protection: monitor suspicious process, network and file activity after deployment; prevention at build time cannot cover every runtime threat.
  • Secrets and data: control secret storage, encryption, rotation and access auditing rather than placing credentials directly in images or manifests.

When comparing platforms or managed services, examine the depth of these controls, their integration with existing identity systems, and who operates each layer. A feature list is less useful than a clear division of shared-responsibility duties.

4. Observability had to scale with cluster complexity

The CNCF survey noted that monitoring and observability became more difficult as systems accumulated large numbers of containers. Operators needed real-time metrics, events and logs, while adoption of Prometheus and OpenTelemetry broadened in 2023.

Five tests for an observability design

  1. Signal coverage: verify that the design collects infrastructure and Kubernetes-state metrics, application metrics, logs, traces, events and audit data where required.
  2. Cardinality control: identify labels that can explode series counts, such as unrestricted request IDs, and set ownership rules for high-cardinality telemetry.
  3. Retention and access: match retention periods to incident response, compliance and performance needs; define who can query which data.
  4. Alert quality: alert on actionable symptoms and service-level objectives, not every transient metric change. Include runbook links and ownership.
  5. Integration effort and cost: account for collectors, exporters, storage, egress, query performance and the staff time required to operate the system.

Prometheus and OpenTelemetry are components of an observability architecture, not a guarantee of useful monitoring. Teams still need coherent naming, dashboards, sampling and incident processes.

5. FinOps became a Kubernetes operating concern

In the CNCF Cloud Native and Kubernetes FinOps microsurvey, 49% of respondents said Kubernetes had increased cloud spend slightly or significantly. That result describes reported cost direction among respondents; it is not a universal causal estimate for every Kubernetes deployment.

Why Kubernetes can increase as well as reduce cost

Scheduling and autoscaling can improve utilization and make it easier to run more workloads on shared infrastructure. At the same time, clusters can accumulate over-provisioned requests, idle nodes, duplicated environments, control-plane charges, cross-zone traffic and observability costs.

Controls that make spending visible

  • Resource requests and limits: right-size them from measured usage and review workloads whose requests reserve capacity they rarely consume.
  • Autoscaling: tune horizontal, vertical and cluster autoscalers together; establish upper bounds so burst behavior remains affordable.
  • Idle-capacity cleanup: identify unused namespaces, preview environments, unattached volumes and underused node pools.
  • Cost allocation: apply consistent labels or namespaces so spending can be attributed to teams, products and environments.
  • Multi-cluster visibility: aggregate usage and committed-spend data across clusters and cloud accounts before making placement decisions.

Evaluate FinOps tools and practices on allocation accuracy, near-real-time visibility, Kubernetes resource granularity and how well recommendations fit engineering workflows.

How to evaluate Kubernetes options using these trends

Whether you are selecting a managed service, standardizing an internal platform or reconsidering Kubernetes, compare options across the same operational axes:

  • Production maturity: upgrade paths, availability design, backup, disaster recovery and support responsibilities.
  • Security: image provenance, identity integration, policy enforcement, secrets and runtime controls.
  • Observability: supported signals, cardinality management, retention, alerting and integration effort.
  • Operational complexity: control-plane administration, networking, storage, add-ons and required expertise.
  • Portability: compatibility with standard APIs versus dependence on provider-specific services.
  • Total cost: compute, storage, networking, control-plane fees, telemetry, support and staff time.

The 2023 evidence supports Kubernetes as a mainstream platform and highlights where operating discipline was required. It does not establish a single best Kubernetes distribution, cloud vendor or tooling stack.
