For a free office suite on Ubuntu, start by checking whether LibreOffice is already installed or available through Ubuntu’s software repositories. If you need a Microsoft-style desktop workflow, compare ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors and SoftMaker FreeOffice; for browser-based collaboration, consider Google Workspace. The right choice depends on whether you need offline editing, open-source software, specific file-format support, or online collaboration—not on a single universally best suite.
How to choose an Office alternative on Ubuntu
These five options are a needs-based shortlist, not a tested ranking. No controlled comparison of complex Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files is established here, and current package support has not been confirmed for every version on both Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04. Before switching, make a copy of important files and check their layout, formulas, fonts, macros, and embedded objects in the suite you plan to use.
- Prefer open-source desktop software? Begin with LibreOffice.
- Need local editing with a Microsoft-style workflow? Consider ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors.
- Exchange DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files? FreeOffice’s vendor announcement names support for opening and saving those formats; test your actual documents for fidelity.
- Need browser collaboration? Google Workspace is a web-based option, not a native offline desktop suite.
- Want another familiar interface? WPS Office offers document, spreadsheet, presentation, and PDF tools according to its vendor-authored comparison.
1. LibreOffice: the open desktop starting point
LibreOffice is the first option to check if you want a free, open-source desktop office suite. The Document Foundation recommends using the Linux distribution’s installation method, such as Ubuntu Software Center, because it is usually the simplest and best-integrated route. It may already be installed, so check your applications menu and Ubuntu’s repositories before downloading a separate build. Repository versions can differ from the latest version offered by the project. The Document Foundation’s installation instructions

2. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors: local editing in a Microsoft-style workflow
Consider ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors if you want to work with local files in a desktop application. Its Ubuntu installation guide says: “The desktop version of online editors does not require constant connection to the internet and can work with local files.” The guide lists DEB, AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, and repository installation routes, and specifies support for 64-bit Linux only. Check the guide for the current package route and prerequisites before installing. ONLYOFFICE Ubuntu installation guide
ONLYOFFICE describes its editors as Microsoft-compatible, but that is a vendor characterization, not proof that every file will retain its layout or functionality. Test copies of documents that rely on complex formatting, formulas, macros, or embedded content. ONLYOFFICE editors overview

3. SoftMaker FreeOffice: an option for Office-format exchange
SoftMaker’s FreeOffice announcement, dated June 18, 2024, says the free suite is available for Linux and can open and save DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. It describes both a ribbon interface and classic menus and toolbars. Those are the vendor’s claims in that announcement; they do not establish exact fidelity for every document or confirm the terms and availability of the current download. Check SoftMaker’s current download and licensing information, then test your own files before relying on it for important work. SoftMaker FreeOffice 2024 announcement
4. WPS Office: a familiar interface with document and PDF tools
WPS’s Linux comparison describes WPS Office as free, available in DEB and RPM packages, and usable for offline editing. It lists document, spreadsheet, presentation, and PDF tools, while noting that some advanced features require premium. The page is vendor-authored, so its compatibility assessments are not independent measurements. Confirm the current Linux package and licensing terms on WPS’s download page before installing or choosing it for work that depends on premium features. WPS comparison of free Linux office suites

5. Google Workspace: browser-based collaboration
Google Workspace is a different category from a locally installed desktop suite: it is browser-based and oriented toward online collaboration. The cited comparison does not establish current free-tier terms or the exact features available to a particular account, so verify those details directly before choosing it. Its web functionality depends on an internet connection; it is not a like-for-like substitute for an offline desktop application. WPS comparison of free Linux office suites

Check your documents before committing
- Install or open the candidate suite using its current Ubuntu or vendor instructions.
- Work on copies of representative DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files rather than your only originals.
- Inspect page layout, fonts, tables, formulas, charts, macros, and embedded objects that matter to your work.
- Save a copy in the format you expect to share, then reopen it in the original application or ask a collaborator to review it.
- Choose based on the results and on your need for offline work, open-source software, or browser collaboration.
Microsoft’s system-requirements page says that internet functionality requires an internet connection. It does not establish the current price or precise limits of Microsoft 365 web apps, so those details should be checked for your region before treating them as a free alternative.
