The best backup software for Windows 11 depends on what you need to recover: File History saves versions of personal files, while image-based tools can help restore a whole PC after a drive failure. Windows Backup sends selected folders to OneDrive and can help move settings to another PC, but it is not a full system image. For whole-PC recovery, compare documented backup scope, destinations, recovery options, Windows compatibility, and current licensing before choosing.

This comparison covers Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, Acronis True Image, Macrium Reflect, O&O DiskImage 21 Premium, and the built-in Windows options. These are documented capabilities, not results of hands-on testing or a performance ranking.

Windows 11 backup options at a glance

Option Documented use Backup scope and recovery Documented destination
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Free standalone backup for Windows PCs Image-based full-PC, volume, and file or folder backups; bootable recovery media and bare-metal recovery are documented External hard drive, NAS, or Veeam repository
Acronis True Image Backup with bundled cloud and security features Back up files or a full system; recovery options range from individual files to a full system Internal or external drive, network share, or Acronis cloud, depending on the plan
Macrium Reflect Image-based backup and recovery Vendor materials describe image-based backup and recovery; check current product and edition details Verify the destination options for the product and edition you select
O&O DiskImage 21 Premium Whole-PC, drive, and file backups Vendor datasheet describes full-system or individual-file restoration, cloning, and scheduled backups Check the current edition details and setup requirements
File History Earlier versions of personal files Stores versions of personal files for file recovery; not a full-PC image External drive or network location
Windows Backup Supported folders and settings for PC migration Copies selected folders to OneDrive and can restore supported settings after signing in on another PC; not a full-PC image OneDrive

Use an external drive or network destination when your workflow calls for local backups. Choose its capacity based on your data and retention needs. Keep recovery media separate from the backup destination: bootable media helps start recovery, but is not itself a copy of your files.

1. Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows

Veeam documents a free standalone Windows Agent with image-based backups of a full PC or volumes, as well as individual file and folder backups. Its published destinations include an external hard drive, NAS, and Veeam repository. The Agent documentation also describes bootable recovery media and bare-metal restoration.

  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

Choose Veeam if you need a documented route to whole-PC recovery and are prepared to set up the backup and recovery workflow. Confirm that the backup destination and recovery media suit your machine. Veeam distinguishes recovery media from backup storage; do not treat a USB flash drive for booting as a substitute for a suitable backup destination.

2. Acronis True Image

Acronis describes Windows 11 64-bit support and backup destinations that include internal or external drives and network shares. Its materials describe recovery from individual files through a full system. Cloud storage and security capabilities are also part of its product positioning, but the included features and cloud capacity depend on the plan.

Consider Acronis if you want local backup options alongside its cloud and security features. Before buying, verify the current plan, price, included cloud capacity, and device limits on the vendor’s product pages. The dossier does not establish comparable current prices or plan allowances.

3. Macrium Reflect

Macrium describes image-based backup and recovery for workstations and links to its current products and pricing. Its help material also describes file and folder archives and partition images, but that material is old and should not be used to infer current edition limits or pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Macrium’s current product information for Windows compatibility, included features, licensing, and recovery-media details before choosing an edition. Do not assume that an older free edition or an older help page describes the current offering.

4. O&O DiskImage 21 Premium

O&O’s 2025 product datasheet lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 support. It describes whole-PC or individual-drive backup, file-based backup, full-system or individual-file restoration, cloning, scheduling, and automatic backup when a device connects.

5. File History and Windows Backup

Windows includes two useful backup features, but they cover different needs. File History saves versions of personal files to an external drive or network location, making it useful when you need an earlier file version. Windows Backup copies selected folders to OneDrive and can restore supported settings and information on another PC after you sign in with the same Microsoft account.

Microsoft says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. That allowance may limit how much you can store in Windows Backup. Neither tool should be treated as a complete disk image for restoring Windows, applications, and the whole system after a drive failure.

How to choose Windows 11 backup software

  1. Decide what you need to recover. For an earlier document version, consider File History. For full-PC recovery, look for documented image or volume backup and a recovery method such as bootable media.
  2. Choose a destination. Check whether the product supports your intended external drive, NAS, network share, cloud service, or repository. Confirm the storage capacity against your data and retention needs.
  3. Check automation and recovery preparation. Compare scheduling or other documented automation, and determine whether you must create bootable recovery media in advance.
  4. Verify compatibility and edition. Confirm Windows 11 support and any 64-bit, product-version, or edition requirements on the current vendor page.
  5. Check current costs and limits. Verify licensing model, device limits, cloud allowance, and renewal terms directly with the vendor before buying.
  6. Test the recovery route. Confirm that your recovery media can start and that the backup destination is available. A backup is only useful if you can access it when needed.

How do I back up my Windows 11 PC to an external hard drive?

Choose a tool based on the recovery job. Microsoft documents external drives as a backup option, and File History can store personal-file versions there. Veeam documents external hard drives as a destination for its Windows Agent. Select a drive with capacity appropriate to your data and retention plan, configure the backup, and prepare any required recovery media separately.

How do I make a full system image backup?

Choose a product that explicitly documents image-based or whole-PC backup and a recovery method that fits your system, such as bare-metal recovery. Veeam documents full-PC image backup and bare-metal recovery; Acronis describes full-system backup and recovery. Check the current product documentation for the selected edition and prepare its recovery media before you need it.

FAQ

What is the best backup software for Windows 11?

There is no single best choice for every recovery need. For full-PC recovery, compare products that document image backup, bootable recovery media, and restoration of a complete system. For personal-file versions, File History may be sufficient.

Is Windows Backup a full system image?

No. Windows Backup copies selected folders to OneDrive and can help restore supported settings and information on another PC. It is not a complete disk image for restoring Windows and all installed applications.

Can File History restore a whole PC after a drive failure?

File History stores versions of personal files on an external drive or network location. It is not a full-PC image; use a product with documented image-based recovery for that purpose.

How much OneDrive storage does Windows Backup include?

Microsoft’s support page says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. Check your account’s current available space and Microsoft’s current terms before relying on it.

Is a USB recovery drive the same as a backup?

No. Recovery media helps start a recovery process, while a backup stores data or a system image to restore. Prepare recovery media separately and confirm that your actual backup is accessible.

The bottom line

Match the tool to the recovery you need. Use File History for earlier versions of personal files and Windows Backup for supported folders and settings associated with a Microsoft account. For a full-PC recovery plan, compare Veeam Agent, Acronis True Image, Macrium Reflect, and O&O DiskImage using current vendor documentation for image scope, destination, recovery process, Windows compatibility, and licensing. No comparative hands-on testing was established for this guide.
