For most Apple-first organizations, Jamf Pro is the best overall MDM starting point. Mosyle Fuse is a strong choice when management, security, and identity should be bundled; Kandji suits teams that prioritize guided Mac provisioning and security automation; Addigy is especially well suited to MSPs and lean IT teams; and Microsoft Intune is the practical choice when Apple devices are part of a larger Microsoft-managed fleet.
That recommendation assumes you need more than enrollment. Apple device management also requires an Apple Business or Apple School Manager organization, an Apple Push Notification service certificate, identity integration, app and license administration, and an enrollment design for company-owned or personal devices. The five products below are editorial recommendations based on documented capabilities—not the result of hands-on testing or independent performance benchmarks.
Quick comparison

Apple’s management framework lets an organization configure devices remotely, distribute apps, enforce settings, monitor compliance, manage software and operating-system updates, lock or erase devices, and automate parts of deployment. Newer Apple operating systems also rely more heavily on Declarative Device Management, in which the device receives a desired state and reports progress or compliance rather than waiting for every action to be issued as a traditional command.

An MDM system can commonly help an administrator:
- Enroll Macs, iPhones, and iPads without manually configuring every device.
- Apply Wi-Fi, VPN, password, restriction, privacy, and security settings.
- Install, update, remove, and license applications.
- Inventory hardware, operating systems, applications, and configuration state.
- Enforce compliance requirements and report devices that fall out of policy.
- Deploy operating-system updates and respond to update status.
- Lock or erase a lost or retired device remotely.
- Provide a Self Service-style catalog for optional applications and approved tools.
MDM is not the whole Apple deployment stack. A successful rollout normally also includes:
- Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager: These services connect organization-owned devices and app purchases to the management workflow. They can assign devices to an external MDM service for Automated Device Enrollment.
- An APNs certificate: Apple Push Notification service is required for an MDM server to communicate with Apple devices. Certificate ownership, renewal responsibility, and continuity should be documented before the administrator who created it leaves.
- Identity integration: An identity provider can connect user accounts, authentication, SSO, and access policies to device enrollment and application access.
- App and license administration: Someone must acquire apps, assign licenses, handle updates, and reclaim licenses when users or devices change.
- An enrollment model: Corporate-owned devices and personally owned devices should not be treated the same way.
1. Jamf Pro: best overall for Apple-first organizations
Jamf Pro is the strongest default recommendation when Macs, iPhones, and iPads are the organization’s primary endpoint fleet and the IT team needs extensive Apple-specific control. Jamf documents management for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro, together with zero-touch deployment, inventory, application management, declarative management, compliance baselines, remote security commands, policies, scripts, and Self Service.
Why Jamf Pro ranks first
Its advantage is breadth and maturity across the operational lifecycle: enroll devices, build a known configuration, distribute software, maintain security settings, expose optional tools through Self Service, identify noncompliant devices, and respond to lost or compromised hardware. The combination is particularly relevant to education, healthcare, government, and enterprise environments where different groups need different policies and workflows.

Jamf’s documentation also reflects Apple’s newer operating-system changes, including the MDM migration workflow introduced with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 for eligible devices. That matters because an MDM selected for a multiyear contract must keep adapting as Apple retires older management methods.
Who should choose it
- Organizations with a medium or large Apple fleet.
- Teams with dedicated Apple administrators.
- Businesses that need detailed policy, scripting, inventory, compliance, and integration workflows.
- Schools, healthcare providers, government departments, and enterprises with specialized deployment requirements.
Trade-offs
Jamf Pro can be more platform than a very small organization needs. Its value is highest when someone has the time and expertise to design policies, test updates, maintain integrations, and keep enrollment and app licensing organized. Request a quote that separates licensing, support, implementation, and optional services; exact packaging and commercial terms should be validated for the fleet size and geography.
2. Mosyle Fuse: best bundled Apple management, security, and identity
Mosyle Fuse combines Apple MDM with several adjacent controls: endpoint security, encrypted DNS, identity and single sign-on, application and patch management, scripting, compliance, and deployment automation. Its documented platform scope includes macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS, as well as Apple Business Manager integration, User Enrollment, Shared iPad, zero-touch deployment, app distribution, and automated operating-system management.
Why it stands out
Mosyle is a good fit when the organization wants fewer separate Apple tools to administer. Documented workflows include automated deployment, macOS account creation, FileVault enablement, identity-provider integrations, app catalog and patch workflows, Apple app licensing, BYOD privacy controls, and compliance automation across Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
Recommended Free Tools
That bundling can be especially attractive to small and midsize teams or MSPs that do not want to assemble separate products for device management, Mac security, DNS filtering, identity, and patch automation. It can also reduce tool sprawl, although it does not automatically reduce operational complexity.
Published pricing snapshot
Mosyle’s Business page lists Fuse at $3.00 per Mac per month and $1.50 per iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS device per month, with a minimum of 30 licenses and annual billing. These are vendor-published figures from the supplied research snapshot, not a guaranteed quotation. Trade-offs
Feature breadth makes plan selection important. Before buying, map every included security, identity, DNS, scripting, and compliance feature against tools already in use. A bundle is valuable when it replaces duplicate products; it is less valuable when the organization will continue paying for and operating the same controls elsewhere.
3. Kandji: best for streamlined provisioning and Mac security automation
Kandji uses Apple’s MDM framework across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS. Its proprietary macOS agent extends management beyond native MDM for functions such as vulnerability management and additional Mac-side enforcement. Kandji documents automated enrollment, application and settings deployment, inventory, remote lock and wipe, Self Service, and declarative operating-system update management.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why it stands out
Kandji’s Blueprint and Library Item model is designed to turn common deployment and security tasks into repeatable workflows. That opinionated structure can help a growing company establish a consistent Mac baseline without designing every policy from scratch. Its use of Apple’s Declarative Device Management for supported operating-system update workflows is also relevant to current Apple releases.
Operating-system support requires a date check
The supplied Kandji support snapshot lists macOS 26 Tahoe, macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 14 Sonoma, iOS and iPadOS 16 and later, tvOS 16 and later, and visionOS 2 and later. It also identifies older systems that are out of support or end of life. These requirements are volatile: verify the live support matrix for the exact versions in the fleet, particularly if older Macs or iPads must remain managed during a phased replacement.
Buyers should also clarify the relationship between Kandji and the newer Iru platform described by the vendor. Confirm the current product name, licensing boundary, supported operating systems, and whether the requested Mac security capability is part of Kandji, Iru, or a separately packaged service.
Trade-offs
Kandji is Apple-centered and does not manage Windows or Android according to its device-requirements documentation. That is an advantage for an Apple-focused team but a limitation for a company seeking one MDM across every endpoint. If Windows or Android management is on the roadmap, compare the cost and administrative consequences of running Kandji alongside a second platform.
4. Addigy: best for lean IT teams and MSPs
Addigy is purpose-built for Apple device management and documents support for Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs. Its platform combines MDM enrollment, policies, software and operating-system updates, a macOS agent, remote support, real-time visibility, compliance enforcement, Apple Business Manager integration, and Automated Device Enrollment.
Why it stands out
Addigy’s single-account, multi-tenant model is the key differentiator for MSPs and teams operating multiple Apple fleets. Administrators can manage separate customers, departments, or organizations without maintaining an entirely separate operating model for every tenant. Agent-assisted Mac management, live sessions, identity-provider integrations, and connections to common MSP tools make it more operationally oriented than a narrow enrollment-and-policy service.
Who should choose it
- MSPs managing Apple devices for multiple customers.
- Distributed organizations that need consistent remote administration.
- Lean internal IT teams that need live visibility and remote support.
- Businesses that want a Mac agent alongside Apple’s native MDM controls.
Trade-offs
Addigy may be broader than necessary for a single small organization that only needs enrollment, a few configuration profiles, and basic app distribution. Validate the depth of mobile workflows, reporting, security add-ons, integrations, remote-support functions, tenant separation, and commercial terms for the specific fleet.

5. Microsoft Intune: best for Microsoft-centric organizations
Microsoft Intune supports iOS and iPadOS and macOS alongside Windows, Android, and Linux. Microsoft documents device enrollment, configuration policies, compliance policies, application delivery, Apple MDM push-certificate requirements, Apple Business Manager and Apple Configurator enrollment paths, and Company Portal support for Apple devices.
Why it makes sense in a Microsoft environment
Intune is often the most convenient choice when the organization already operates Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, Conditional Access, and cross-platform endpoint policies. A single endpoint-management and identity strategy can be easier for an established Microsoft team to govern than adding a separate Apple-focused console.
Intune is fifth in this Apple-focused ranking not because it is unsuitable for Apple devices, but because Apple-first organizations may prefer deeper Mac-specific workflows, richer Apple fleet operations, or more specialized Apple automation from Jamf, Mosyle, Kandji, or Addigy.
Important Apple update changes
Microsoft’s current documentation notes that Apple deprecated legacy software-update MDM commands and payloads with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26. Organizations must increasingly use Apple’s Declarative Device Management approach for update workflows. This is a platform-planning issue, not merely an Intune setting: any MDM migration should test update behavior on the exact Apple operating systems in use.
Trade-offs
Intune’s value depends heavily on existing Microsoft licensing, identity architecture, Conditional Access design, and administrator expertise. Apple enrollment still requires the APNs certificate, and organizations may use Apple Business Manager or Apple Configurator depending on the device and enrollment path. Before consolidating tools, test Mac packaging, patching, inventory detail, compliance reporting, support workflows, and the experience for iPhone and iPad users.

A native alternative: Apple Business built-in device management
Apple’s newer Apple Business service is worth considering for a small organization with an entirely Apple fleet and straightforward requirements. Apple announced it as an all-in-one platform with built-in MDM, Blueprints, Managed Apple Accounts, app distribution, employee groups, identity-provider integrations, an admin API, and zero-touch deployment. Apple says the service became available on April 14, 2026; availability, eligibility, and included features should be checked for the organization’s market.
Apple Business is not included in the five third-party recommendations because the comparison focuses on full-featured external MDM platforms with documented specialization, integrations, or operational depth. It should also not be confused with Apple Business Manager. Apple Business Manager is primarily a deployment, purchasing, app, and device-assignment service that can connect to an external MDM provider. Apple Business is the newer native management platform.
Choose the native option when simplicity and an Apple-native workflow matter more than extensive third-party customization. Choose a specialized MDM when the organization needs advanced scripting, detailed security automation, complex integrations, multi-tenant operations, or specialized Apple fleet administration.
How to choose the right MDM
1. Start with fleet composition
- Mostly Macs, iPhones, and iPads: Begin with Jamf Pro, Mosyle Fuse, Kandji, or Addigy.
- Apple devices plus Windows, Android, and Linux: Evaluate Intune first if Microsoft identity and security services are already established.
- Multiple customer fleets: Prioritize Addigy’s multi-tenant operating model or compare it with a vendor’s MSP offering.
- Small, all-Apple business: Compare Apple Business and a lightweight third-party plan before paying for capabilities the team will not use.
2. Separate corporate-owned and BYOD enrollment
For company-owned Macs, iPhones, and iPads, Automated Device Enrollment can connect the device to the MDM during activation and support supervision and stronger organizational controls. The device must be assigned to the selected management service in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, and the organization must configure the required service tokens and certificates.

Personally owned devices need a different privacy model. Apple’s User Enrollment and account-driven enrollment options are designed to keep work data and organizational controls separate from personal data. A BYOD policy should state what the organization can see, what it can remove, whether it can enforce a passcode, and what happens when an employee leaves. Do not use a corporate-owned enrollment design for personal phones merely because it offers more control.
3. Check identity and access dependencies
Ask whether the MDM connects to the identity provider already used for employee accounts, SSO, groups, and access decisions. An isolated MDM directory can create duplicate accounts and manual joiner-mover-leaver work. Conversely, a bundled identity feature may duplicate an existing identity platform. Compare the actual lifecycle workflow rather than choosing solely because a product includes SSO.
4. Test software and licensing operations
Confirm how the platform acquires and assigns Apple apps, handles paid licenses, presents optional applications, updates third-party software, and removes access when a user or device is retired. A platform that can enroll devices but leaves app licensing and patching largely manual may not solve the operational problem the organization is trying to fix.
5. Validate declarative management and OS updates
Ask vendors how supported versions of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS handle update deferrals, deadlines, user notifications, compliance reporting, and recovery from a failed update. Apple’s move away from legacy update commands makes this a current evaluation requirement. Test major OS upgrades, not just minor updates, on representative Intel and Apple silicon Macs where both exist.

Apple recommends connecting multiple device-management services and testing shortlisted services with a small number of devices. Use that approach rather than moving the entire fleet immediately.
- Connect the test services to a controlled Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager environment.
- Enroll representative Macs, iPhones, and iPads, including the oldest supported models.
- Test Automated Device Enrollment on a wiped corporate-owned device.
- Test User Enrollment or account-driven enrollment on a personal device if BYOD is in scope.
- Install and remove applications, assign licenses, and verify Self Service or app-catalog behavior.
- Apply security settings, FileVault or equivalent Mac security workflows, compliance rules, and access policies.
- Test a lost-device lock, remote erase, user departure, certificate renewal, and administrator handoff.
- Run an operating-system update and record what the user sees, what the administrator sees, and how a failed update is handled.
Implementation checklist
Before selecting a contract, require written answers to these questions:
- Which exact macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS versions are supported today?
- Which features require an agent, a separate product, or a higher license tier?
- Does the platform support Automated Device Enrollment, supervision, User Enrollment, account-driven enrollment, Shared iPad, and Apple Configurator workflows needed by the organization?
- How are APNs certificates, Apple service tokens, app licenses, and administrator permissions transferred during staff changes?
- What inventory fields and compliance reports are available for Macs, iPhones, and iPads?
- How are third-party Mac applications patched, and can the organization approve, defer, or ring deployments?
- How does the product handle Apple’s Declarative Device Management requirements on current operating systems?
- What integrations exist for identity, SIEM, ticketing, remote support, vulnerability management, and MSP tools?
- What are the minimum license quantities, device-type prices, annual commitments, support levels, implementation fees, and regional taxes?
- What happens to devices, licenses, and data if the organization cancels or changes MDM providers?
Common MDM rollout failures
The device does not enroll automatically
Check that the device is owned by the organization, appears in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, is assigned to the intended MDM service, and is being activated or erased through the expected workflow. A device purchased outside the organization’s managed purchasing channel may require an additional assignment or Configurator process.
The MDM suddenly stops communicating
Check the APNs certificate and its renewal owner first. An expired or lost certificate can interrupt communication with managed devices. Keep the renewal account, certificate process, and recovery contacts in the organization’s documentation rather than in one administrator’s personal records.
BYOD users object to excessive control
The enrollment model may be wrong. Re-evaluate User Enrollment or account-driven enrollment, document the exact data visible to administrators, and ensure offboarding removes organizational data without unnecessarily erasing personal content.
Best Value
Apps are unavailable or licenses are exhausted
Review Apple app purchasing and assignment, device and user licensing, application identifiers, and the MDM’s synchronization with Apple’s service. Test both a new user and a replacement device before production rollout.
Operating-system updates do not behave as expected
Older MDM update commands may not apply to current Apple releases. Confirm that the product is using the appropriate declarative update workflow, then test deferrals, deadlines, notifications, power requirements, storage constraints, and failure reporting on the actual fleet.
Where implementation help may fit
Complex migrations can benefit from a qualified Jamf implementation partner, Mosyle deployment partner, Kandji deployment partner, Addigy MSP partner, Microsoft Intune solution provider, or Apple deployment consultant. These routes are not interchangeable, and availability depends on geography, approval, product scope, and the vendor’s current partner terms. Treat them as implementation options rather than confirmed affiliate offers, and ask for references, a statement of work, certificate and token ownership procedures, pilot support, and an exit plan.

Is Apple Business Manager an MDM?
No. Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager provide device assignment, app and license administration, and deployment services that connect to an MDM. An external MDM such as Jamf Pro, Mosyle Fuse, Kandji, Addigy, or Intune supplies the management policies and administration. Apple Business is a separate newer Apple service that includes built-in device management.
Which MDM is best for a small business with only Apple devices?
Start by comparing Apple Business, Mosyle Fuse, and a focused third-party plan from Jamf, Kandji, or Addigy. Apple Business may be sufficient when enrollment, basic settings, accounts, and app distribution are straightforward. Choose a fuller platform when you need advanced Mac security, patching, scripting, compliance, or integrations.
Can an MDM manage personal iPhones and iPads?
Yes, but the organization should use a BYOD-appropriate model such as User Enrollment or account-driven enrollment rather than applying the strongest corporate-owned controls. The goal is to protect work data while preserving the user’s personal data and privacy.
Do I need Apple Business Manager to use an MDM?
An organization can have enrollment paths that do not depend on Automated Device Enrollment, but Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager is important for streamlined corporate-owned deployment, device assignment, app licensing, and zero-touch workflows. Confirm the exact enrollment options supported by the selected MDM.

Why might an Apple-first company choose Intune instead of Jamf?
Intune can be the better operational choice when the organization already uses Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, Conditional Access, and one cross-platform endpoint-management process. An Apple-first organization that needs deeper Mac-specific automation or Apple fleet operations may prefer Jamf Pro or another Apple-focused platform.
The Bottom Line
Choose Jamf Pro for the deepest general-purpose Apple management, Mosyle Fuse for a bundled management-and-security stack, Kandji for guided Mac provisioning, Addigy for MSP and multi-tenant operations, and Intune when Microsoft is already the center of endpoint identity and access. Whichever product wins the shortlist, connect it correctly to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, protect the APNs certificate lifecycle, separate corporate-owned and BYOD enrollment, and pilot current Apple operating-system updates before a full migration.
