You can review five kinds of automatic behavior on a Samsung Galaxy: device restarts, app updates from each of two stores, software-update downloads, and Wi-Fi reconnection or switching. The controls are separate, and turning them off can mean more manual checking or delayed updates. Menu names and availability vary by model, carrier, region, and software version.
1. Automatic device restarts
Samsung’s documented path is Settings > Device care > Auto optimisation > Auto restart. Review the switches for “Restart when needed” and “Restart on schedule.” Depending on your Galaxy’s software, the feature may appear under a different name or menu.
Samsung says a scheduled restart runs at the selected date and time only when the device is not in use. By default, the screen must be off and the battery must be at least 30%. After a restart, you may need to unlock the phone before messages and notifications work normally. Turning off both Auto restart options does not guarantee that the phone will never restart: Samsung says a system restart may still occur depending on the device’s condition, and emergency security updates may trigger one in some regions. 2. Google Play Store app updates
To change automatic updates for apps installed or managed through Google Play, open Play Store > account icon > Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps. Samsung lists “Update over Wi-Fi only” and “Don’t auto-update apps” among the choices. The exact labels or available options may differ by app or Play Store version.

You can also change the setting for an individual app: in Play Store, go to account icon > Manage apps & device, open the app’s details, and turn off “Enable auto-update” if that option is shown. Choosing not to update automatically means you’ll need to check for updates yourself; choosing Wi-Fi-only limits automatic downloading to Wi-Fi. 3. Galaxy Store app updates
Galaxy Store updates are controlled separately from Google Play updates. In Galaxy Store, open Menu > Settings > Auto update apps and select an option shown on your phone. Samsung notes that a Samsung account is required to access Galaxy Store. Its US guidance does not establish that every version presents identical choices, so use the options displayed on your device. 4. Automatic software-update downloads
System software downloads are separate from app updates. Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s December 31, 2021 instructions for Android 9–12 describe a Settings > Software update > Wi-Fi auto download control. That path is older, Korea-specific guidance—not a universal menu path for current Galaxy phones.
On the devices covered by that guidance, turning off Wi-Fi auto-download does not necessarily stop downloads: if mobile data is active, the phone may use it instead, subject to carrier policy and limits. Check your current local Samsung support guidance and the labels on your phone before changing the setting. Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s instructions specify the versions and conditions they address.

5. Automatic Wi-Fi reconnection and switching
Saved Wi-Fi networks and Intelligent Wi-Fi have their own controls. Samsung’s US connection guide describes saved networks that can reconnect automatically, as well as Intelligent Wi-Fi options such as “Switch to better Wi-Fi networks” and “Turn Wi-Fi on/off automatically” in frequently used locations. The network-switching option can move the phone to a faster or more stable network while the screen is off. Availability can depend on model or carrier.
To review these controls, open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi, then look for saved-network details or Intelligent Wi-Fi. If the labels or route differ, search Settings for “Intelligent Wi-Fi” or check Samsung’s device-specific instructions. You can also forget a saved network when you no longer want the phone to reconnect to it. These options change connection behavior; they are distinct from simply toggling Wi-Fi on or off. Which settings should you change?
Choose based on what you want to manage, not an assumption that disabling automation will improve battery life, performance, privacy, or data costs. The documented controls have different scopes and tradeoffs:

If you turn off an automatic update option, make a habit of checking for app or system updates yourself. If an option is missing, do not assume your phone has the same menu as another Galaxy: Samsung warns that names and layouts vary across models and software versions.
