Choose 1440p (QHD) if you want strong gaming frame rates without demanding as much from your GPU, especially on a 27-inch monitor. Choose 4K if finer detail, more native workspace, or 4K content matters more—and your PC can sustain your target settings and refresh rate. Neither resolution is automatically better: screen size, viewing distance, refresh rate, panel, ports, and adaptive sync all affect the right choice.

What is the difference between 4K and 1440p?

For standard 16:9 desktop monitors, 1440p—also called QHD—is 2560 × 1440 pixels. 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160. That works out to about 3.69 million pixels for QHD and 8.29 million for 4K, so 4K has 2.25 times as many pixels per image. Dell’s monitor listings use these resolution labels, and Dell’s 4K monitor catalog identifies 3840 × 2160 as 4K UHD.

More pixels can show finer detail, but how much sharper a screen looks depends on its physical size, viewing distance, and your visual preferences. A higher resolution is most noticeable when the screen is large enough or viewed close enough for the extra detail to be apparent. ASUS’s monitor resolution guide likewise treats resolution as a choice to match to display size and use, rather than a specification to judge in isolation.

Which resolution is better for gaming?

For the same game and settings, 4K requires the GPU to render more than twice as many pixels per frame as 1440p. That generally makes 4K more demanding, particularly if you want a high refresh rate. Dell recommends a strong GPU for high-refresh 4K gaming and presents QHD as a useful option when frame rate is the priority. These are general buying-guide recommendations, not a prediction for a specific graphics card or game; see Dell’s 2026 gaming monitor buying guide.

There is no universal frames-per-second penalty that applies to every system. Results vary with the GPU, game, graphics settings, CPU limits, upscaling, and the frame rate you are targeting. If you are choosing a monitor for a particular PC, look for performance information for that exact hardware and game rather than assuming a fixed difference between resolutions. RTINGS’ 1440p-versus-4K overview also discusses the choice in terms of the user’s target and setup.

Choose 1440p for frame rate per GPU budget

A 1440p monitor is often the practical fit if responsive play and higher frame rates matter more than maximum pixel detail. This is especially relevant for competitive games, where a display’s refresh rate is useful only if your PC can produce enough frames to take advantage of it. Check what your system can deliver at the settings you actually use.

Choose 4K for detail-focused gaming

4K is the stronger fit if crisp detail and immersive presentation matter more than maximizing frame rate, and your GPU can handle the workload. Dell characterizes 4K as a premium choice for cinematic single-player games, HDR content, or console play; that is Dell’s general buying guidance, not a guarantee that every 4K monitor or game will look or perform the same.

How do screen size and everyday work affect the choice?

Think of 27-inch QHD and 32-inch 4K as useful starting points, not rules. Dell and ASUS both discuss matching screen size to resolution and use. Viewing distance and personal preference matter too: a 27-inch 4K display has a high pixel density, but whether that benefits you depends on how you view it, your scaling preferences, and your applications. Compare size and resolution together rather than treating either pairing as mandatory.

For productivity, 4K provides more native pixels for detailed content and workspace. 1440p can be easier for a PC to drive and may be sufficient at the size and viewing distance you prefer. That does not establish a fixed productivity advantage for 4K across all software: the value depends on your applications, content, and preferences.

NVIDIA publishes a comparison stating that a 31.5-inch, 3840 × 2160 4K monitor has 84% higher image quality than a 27-inch, 1920 × 1080 HD monitor, using its stated PPD measure of 35.6. That is NVIDIA’s comparison of 4K with 1080p, and it changes screen size as well as resolution; it is not a direct 4K-versus-1440p test. See NVIDIA’s 4K technology page.

What monitor specifications should you compare?

Resolution alone does not determine whether a monitor suits your setup. Compare the features that affect how you will use it and what your PC can support.
