The original PS4 outputs up to 1080p, so a 4K TV does not unlock 4K gaming on that console. PS4 Pro supports 4K output for supported content, making a 4K TV more useful if you want that capability. You can still use PS4 Pro with a 1080p TV.
Start with your PS4 model
The original PS4’s documented HDMI output modes are 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. It does not provide PS4 Pro’s 4K output. For an original PS4 used mainly for gaming, a 1080p TV is therefore a sensible match; consider 4K if you also expect to use 4K-capable devices or services with the television.
PS4 Pro supports 4K output for supported content. Sony describes 4K-quality images and says Pro games can show more detail, but the way a specific game renders and performs depends on that title. “4K output” alone does not mean every game renders internally at native 4K. Sony also says older games without dedicated Pro features can output at 4K when used with a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI cable. What a 4K TV changes for PS4 Pro
A 4K UHD screen has a resolution of 3840 × 2160, compared with 1920 × 1080 for Full HD: four times as many pixels by calculation. That higher resolution is useful only when the console, game or other source, connection and TV support the relevant output. The resolution figures do not guarantee a particular improvement in every game or viewing setup.

When connected to an HDTV, PS4 Pro remains usable: Sony says it delivers 1080p for all PS4 games, and some supported titles can have higher or more stable frame rates. A 4K TV is not a requirement for buying or using the Pro. Sony’s September 7, 2016 PS4 Pro announcement describes these HDTV benefits.
Keep HDR separate from resolution
4K and HDR are different features. Sony said all PS4 systems support HDR imaging, but HDR requires an HDR-compatible TV and supported game or entertainment content. A 1080p TV can be a relevant option for HDR if it supports HDR; buying a 4K TV alone does not ensure HDR will be available or used.

Check the TV input and HDMI connection
For PS4 Pro 4K output, check that the specific TV input supports the required display mode and use the recommended cable. PlayStation’s 4K setup guide recommends Premium-certified HDMI cables, and its FAQ specifies a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 2160p output. A display mode may not appear if the connected display does not support it.
- Connect PS4 Pro to a 4K-compatible TV input using a Premium-certified HDMI cable.
- Check the TV input’s supported modes and the console’s display settings. If 2160p is unavailable, confirm the TV input and cable support the mode before assuming the console or game is at fault.

Choose based on your situation

There is no universal screen size recommendation for PS4: room size, seating distance and the other media you watch matter. Also consider whether the TV will serve 4K sources beyond the console. PlayStation’s PS4 Pro FAQ identifies room size, viewing distance and media types as factors.

Sony’s model and setup information establishes output capabilities and connection requirements. It does not establish how much better a particular TV will look, compare input lag between TV models, or determine which set is the best value at current retail prices. Those questions depend on the exact televisions, games and prices you are considering.
